Counseling 510 Theories in Counseling
They are similar because they take into account childhood experiences which impact
the individual as an adult. They are divergent based upon the focus and outcome/goals.
Psychoanalytic theory focuses on shedding light on the unconscious with specific
considerations on "childhood experiences, which are discussed, reconstructed,
interpreted, and analyzed” (Corey, 2021). It helps understand client’s resistance,
incomplete issues, transference, defenses which prevent the client from effectively
functioning (Corey, 2021). A few limitations include availability of fully trained
psychoanalyst therapists, long term commitment to achieve goals (Corey, 2021).
Adlerian approach is flexible and integrative in nature (Corey, 2021). It can be utilized in
different settings and situations. This approach is well suited for time limited
situations/approaches. Corey describes Adler’s ideas as “vague and general,” (Corey,
2021, p5-6a) as he was more focused on practicing therapy rather than arranging it in
an orderly presentable manner (Corey, 2021).
From a biblical perspective the psychoanalytic therapy takes into account human’s
sinful nature (Rom 3:23), which is Freud’s perspective on human nature. On the other
hand, we are made in the divine image of God (Gen 1:26) (Tan, 2022). Adler’s
perspective on human nature is optimistic and that an individual’s free will to change
towards betterment (Tan, 2022). This however does not take into consideration the
fallenness of human nature and the need for redemption (Rom 3:23) (Tan, 2022).
