Abstract
Addiction counseling, substance abuse disorders, group counseling, are a few factors that
that comprises the counseling field, specifically practitioners desire to specialize in alcohol and
substance abuse disorders. Mental disorders such as major or minor depressive disorders, eating
disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, gambling disorders, and generalized or minor anxiety
disorders are correlated to mental health symptoms. These symptoms may include feeling a sense
of anxiety, panic attacks, depression, manic episodes, and appetite suppressors. It is imperative to
understand that individual’s experiencing alcohol or substance abuse addiction are solely at fault
for their position. Other factors such as family or friend relationships, financial instability,
genetic factors and environmental factors have an immense effect on individuals with addiction.
The main purpose of the is paper to provide a informative foundation for support groups such as
Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Al-Anon, and addiction therapy groups. The
information integrated will provide a detailed description of the history for each group, meeting
purpose and primary function, future directions, goals, knowledge acquired from research, and
future implications for further research into the effectiveness of support groups and addiction
therapy groups.
