Presenting Problems
Joanne is 45-year-old divorced women who has a history of depression. Joanne reported
suicidal attempts on three different occasions. Joanne verbalized taking medication to overdose
twice and cutting her wrists. Joanne sees a psychiatrist monthly and is prescribed medication.
Although Joanne is prescribed medications, she has been non-compliant.
Joanne has been divorced for 10 years as a result of her husband admitting that he was a
homosexual. Joanne noted that she has a 13-year-old daughter from her marriage and has not
dated since the divorce. About seven years ago, Joanne had an affair with her sister’s husband.
Joanne eventually ended the relationship after a year due to guilt. Joanne reported that her sister
never found out about the affair, but she carries a lot of shame and guilt for betraying her sister.
Joanne noted that her sister’s husband continues to pursue a relationship with her. Joanne finds
satisfaction in working her high stress job approximately 60-70 hours a week. Joanne does not
engage in social activities and has no hobbies.
