Bipolar and Related Disorders
Overview
In this summary, I will discuss bipolar and related disorders as stated in the Diagnostic
and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 2022 (DSM-5-TR) pg.139. The chapter titled bipolar
and associated disorders help diagnose bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymic disorder,
substance/medication-induced bipolar, and related disorders. The chapter on bipolar and related
disorders gives the diagnostic criteria and guidelines for making clinical decisions and judgments
Disorders
Bipolar I disorder can be diagnosed if the client exhibits the following for at least a week.
Some symptoms of Biopolar I may include and specify inflated self-esteem, lack of sleep, being
talkative, being easily distracted, and becoming involved in destructive behavior. Based on the
criteria, one manic episode in a lifetime is enough to diagnose a client with bipolar I disorder.
Bipolar II, bipolar II, cyclothymic disorder, and substance/medication-induced bipolar are similar
to bipolar because of the periods of hypomanic symptoms. However, the lack of manic episodes
makes them different. Cyclothymic disorder and bipolar II can be distinguished by one or more
hypomanic episodes and one or more depressive episodes. Cyclothymic disorder might be
considered as a mild form of bipolar disorder. Substance/medication-induced bipolar disorder is
