The O*NET Interest Profiler includes 60 questions about activities performed in the
workplace. Responses to the questions include Strongly Dislike, Dislike, Unsure, Like, or
Strongly Like. After answering all 60 questions, scores reflecting one’s interests types; realistic,
investigative, artistic, social, and enterprising, are provided. John Holland calls these personality
types (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017).
My score for the realistic aspect of the O*NET Interest Profiler was 0. I scored a 5 on the
investigative aspect of the O*NET Interest Profiler. For the artistic aspect, I scored a 1. I scored a
26 on the social aspect of the O*NET Interest Profiler. My enterprising score was a 7 and my
conventional score was a 4 on the O*NET Interest Profiler.
My three highest scores were 26 for Social, 7 for enterprising, and 5 for investigative.
According to Niles and Harris-Bowlsbey (2017), individuals with a social personality enjoy
activities that entail manipulation of other people to either inform, train, develop, cure, or
enlighten. They do not like explicit, ordered, and systematic activities involving materials, tools,
or machines. They have human relations competencies such as interpersonal and educational
competencies. Individuals with a social personality like jobs such as teacher, counselor, clinical
psychologist, and speech therapist. They are often described as “warm”, “helpful”, “social”,
“understanding”, “responsible”, and “patient” (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017, p.55).
Niles and Bowlsbey (2017) explain individuals with an enterprising personality as those
who like activities that entail manipulation of others to attain organizational or economic gain.
These individuals do not enjoy observational, symbolic, and systematic activities. They often
have leadership, interpersonal, and persuasive competencies. Individuals with an enterprising
personality often have jobs such as entrepreneur, salesperson, or manager. They are often
described as “acquisitive”, “optimistic”, “adventurous”, “impulsive”, “sociable”, and “popular”.
(Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017, p.55).
The investigative type, according to Niles and Harris-Bowlsbey (2017), are individuals
who like activities that entail observational, symbolic, systematic, and creative investigation of
physical, biological, and cultural, phenomena to understand and control that phenomena. They
do not like persuasive, social, and repetitive activities and usually have scientific and
mathematical competencies. They often have jobs such as biologist, chemist, or anthropologist.
They are typically described as “analytical”, “reserved”, “independent”, “introverted”,
“intellectual”, and “curious” (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017, p.54).
My most important work value is helping others. This value is pretty self-explanatory in
which you are committed to helping those around you. Helping others means that you offer
assistance to others no matter their age, race, gender, religion, political affiliation, disability, or
culture. You do whatever you can to help those around you.
My second most important work value is self-respect. Self-respect has to do with having
pride and confidence in oneself. Having self-respect means that one believes that they are good
and are worthy of being treated well. Self-respect is not something that everyone is born with,
but it is important that everyone learns it.
Personal Reactions
I was not surprised that my top score was Social, considering that I am pursuing a
master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. I do enjoy working with others to help them
learn and grow and I very much enjoy this more than working with objects, machines, or
information. If I was asked to describe myself, I would use words like “idealistic”,
“cooperative”, “kind”, “sympathetic”, “friendly”, “patient”, “helpful”, “warm”, and
“responsible”, all of which are the traits related to the Holland code descriptors. This is also not
surprising considering that my most important work value was helping others.
I was quite surprised with my second highest score being Enterprising. I do agree that I
have leadership, interpersonal, and persuasive competencies, but I do not prefer activities that
entail manipulation of others to attain organizational or economic gains. I would not describe
myself as “impulsive”, “attention-getting”, “domineering”, or “extroverted”.
I was not as surprised to have one of my results by Investigative. I have always been
interested in searching for facts and figuring out problems. I was surprised to learn some of the
jobs that individuals with an investigative personality hold, such as biologist, chemist, physicist,
anthropologist, geologist, and medical technologist. None of those jobs are of any interest to me,
but I would describe myself as “independent”, “analytical”, “modest”, “reserved”, “introverted”,
and “intellectual”.
External Influences
I do not believe that any intrinsic factors influenced my assessment results significantly.
One intrinsic factor that may have influenced my assessment results a little bit, may be my age. I
am at a point in my life where I am really trying to figure myself out. With that being said, I have
a high level of self-awareness and know what I want to do for a career, which may have
influenced my assessment results.
There are some external factors that I believe may have influenced my assessment results.
First, I had been doing homework all day and completed the O*NET Interest Inventory around 9
o’clock at night. I was exhausted while taking the assessment and this may have influenced my
assessment results. Another external influence that may have influenced my assessment results
was the fact that my dog was not on her best behavior while I was taking the assessment. I kept
having to get up to stop her from getting into trouble. This my have also influenced my
assessment results.
Conclusions
An individual is not just one personality type. They may have traits from two or three
different types, but usually one is more dominant than the others. All of the assessment results
were similar in some aspects. My values aligned with all of my interest results. Especially my
most important work value (helping others) and my highest score on the O*NET Interest Profiler
(Social).
After completing all of the assessments, it was clear to me that a career in which I am
able to help people is best for me. The best work environment based on mu vocational
personality types would be one where I am able to listen to and talk to others and investigate
their issues and concerns in order to figure out the best way to help them.
I am only 23 years old. Therefore, I have not had a lot of job experience. I have been a
waitress for about six years and I enjoy doing it. I believe that this fits into the social personality
type because I am able to talk and listen to people and I am able to serve them. I believe that
most of the assessment results aligned with my perception of what I will be best at in a future
career.
