Abstract
An intake interview is a crucial step in the overall therapeutic alliance between a counselor and
client and if not done efficiently and with compassion it can hinder or even halt the relationship
before it even starts. Intake interviews can vary in format, length, and they can be structured or
semi-structured depending on the counselor. Throughout completion of the intake interview a
counselor should be cognizant of their strengths and weakness as it relates to their ability to
effectively carry out an intake interview. Additionally, they should be assessing and reassessing
their process while continually looking for ways that they can improve upon their intake
assessment abilities. That improvement requires that counselor remain flexible, adaptable, and
open to constructive feedback from their supervisors and peers alike.
