Given the information provided in the assignment instructions, there is one test that
shows better insight into having a higher reliability than the other. I would choose the instrument
of Test A, this has to do with the smaller sample size of test questions, 40 compared to the 117
that Test B contains. The measure of self-esteem is made evident by the consistency of the
homogeneity in Test A, which is relevant to the internal consistency, having a test-retest r=.80
and reliability due to the small sample size of 40. Test A, .81, and Test B, .65-.71, demonstrates
that the scores in Test A have a higher test-retest reliability of more than ten percent than Test B.
According to Sherperis et. al. (2019) looking at the coefficient alphas for each test, the errors
found in Test A are more likely attributed to the test-takers themselves than the instrument
utilized to measure a specific variable. The r=.41 in Test A also shows us that the results from the
test are more likely to predict the outcome than in Test B. Additionally, the fact that test A has a
description of “measure of self-esteem” and the corresponding scales measure what the
descriptor of the test is, makes Test A more reliable in terms of the two tests.
Based on the information given Test A provided more information concerning the validity
of the test content, whereas Test B provided a very high/surface level explanation of the validity
aspects of the instrument. In terms of validity between the two tests, Test A displays
homogeneity between the scales of measurement indicating a more positive instrument for
obtaining information relevant to the desired measure of self-esteem. Since test B utilizes scales
obtaining information in addition to self-esteem, it makes is a less valid scale to use in this
instance and therefore Test A is the better of the two scales.
I would like more information on the demographics of the sample size population. The
demographic information I would like to see the most would be the age, education level, and
income of the participants. This would be to see if there was a trend in an increase in self-esteem
as one ages; or possibly as one becomes more educated; or even as one makes more money in
their lifetime. This would allow for some external factors to be evaluated in the determination of
one’s self-esteem. It could also allow one to determine if further investigation into whether
intrinsic versus extrinsic factors play a role in the components of self-esteem.
