Topic Selection: Find a Gap Assignment
1) First Topic of Interest: Is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) effective in producing
favorable long-term results for people with anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder,
and obsessive-compulsive disorder?
Gap Statement: According to van Dis et al. (2020), “After 12 months, effects were small
to medium for generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder, large for PTSD,
and not significant or not available for other disorders. High-quality randomized clinical
trials with more than 12 months of follow-up and reported relapse rates are needed.” (p.
256).

This article focuses on researchers who conducted trials of the effectiveness of cognitive
behavioral therapy in treating anxiety-related disorders. According to the results, the skills and
knowledge acquired in CBT remain stable until 12 months after treatment but do not improve
further.

2) Second Topic of Interest: Does improving self-esteem and social problem-solving skills
reduce intimate partner violence in emerging adulthood?
Gap Statement: According to Cherrier et al. (2023), “Although there are many studies
examining the psychosocial vulnerability factors of intimate partner violence (IPV)
victimization in emerging adulthood, little is known about the life skills that may be
involved, such as social problem solving (SPS) and self-esteem” (p. 1).

The purpose of this study is to examine the links between SPS, self-esteem, and the
various types (psychological, physical, and sexual) and the extent of IPV victimization during
emerging adulthood. The researchers concluded that further clarification is needed to link the
two and intimate partner Violence.
3) Third Topic of Interest: Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) effective in treating
substance abuse?
Gap Statement: According to Magill et al. (2023), “Robust evidence suggests the
efficacy of classical/traditional CBT compared to minimal and usual care control
conditions. CBT combined with another evidence-based treatment such as Motivational
Interviewing, Contingency Management, or pharmacotherapy is also efficacious
compared to minimal and usual care control conditions. However, no form of CBT

consistently demonstrates efficacy compared to other empirically supported modalities.”

Substance abuse and rehabilitation,=14, 1–11. https://doi.org/10.2147/SAR.S362864.
This research analyzed the effectiveness of CBT in addressing substance abuse. The
findings suggested that further research is needed to tailor treatment for each individual.
