CULTURAL BACKGROUND 2
Abstract
When talking about cultural backgrounds it is important to remember that our roots are the basis
of who we are. In order to understand other perspectives, we must first recognize our own and
become self-aware of the differences and similarities in our cultural backgrounds. I recognize
and understand that White European culture is my predominant culture over Native American
culture, but I must recognize both to fully assert who I am. Acknowledging racism and
discrimination in all cultures including my own will allow me to connect with others and their
various outlooks on life. Using our roles in our different cultures will help us to reach others as
well as advocate for them in whatever capacity we can. Learning of our cultures and how they
have adapted and changed historically gives us insight on what mistakes to avoid as well as
know our cultural identity. In order for a culture to have social justice they must know what and
who they are advocating for.
