Chapter 2 – Research Training Joys and Challenges
1. In what ways do you think scientific thinking might be useful for both practice and
science activities?
Scientific Thinking can be useful for practice and science activities in many ways.
Scientific thinking allows individuals to approach problems systematically and logically, leading
to more effective problem-solving and decision-making. By incorporating scientific method and
critical thinking processes, researchers are able to generate reliable data, draw valid conclusions,
and contribute new insights to their respective disciplines. Scientific thinking is most importantly
useful for both by providing empirical evidence
2. Identify five activities you can do to incorporate scientific thinking into your
counseling practice.
According to Heppner, various activities are suggested to help incorporate scientific
thinking into counseling practice. Activities that include, staying current with research literature
by regularly reading and critically analyzing research articles, conducting client assessments
using standardized measures, by utilizing validated assessment tools, counselors can gather
objective data about their clients' symptoms and progress, and engaging in regular case
consultations with colleagues can help counselors gain different perspectives on challenging
cases and consider alternative approaches based on research and best practices. Participating in
professional development workshops and conferences focused on evidence-based practices can
enhance counselors' knowledge and skills in applying scientific thinking to their work. By
engaging in these activities, counselors can enhance their practice by incorporating scientific
thinking into their work, ultimately leading to better outcomes for their clients.

3. What do you see as the most important advantages of integrating science and practice
in the counseling profession?
As a counselor, one advantage is acknowledging unconscious biases upfront, so I can
take proactive steps to mitigate their impact on my research. Cultural factors may influence my
research design and interpretation of results, by showing how counseling is inherently
interwoven with diverse cultural perspectives, and it is crucial for researchers to approach their
work with sensitivity and awareness of these nuances. By incorporating cultural competence into
my research design, I can ensure that my findings are inclusive and applicable across various
cultural contexts. By integrating science and practice in the counseling profession, I hope this
will better equip me to navigate the joys and challenges that come with conducting meaningful
research in counseling.
4. How do you see yourself in terms of being a researcher and/or practitioner?
As a criminal justice graduate, research has always been a skill of mine, especially for
topics of interests. I see myself as a very loving, patient practitioner, that will hopefully
encourage my clients to live in their happiness as much as they can. The life we live is not easy
and if I am able to help my community be able to cope better and celebrate more, then I will be
fulfilled as a person.
5. What do you feel very passionate about in your future as a counselor?
Can you see any way that research could help you enhance the work you will do within
the areas that excite you the most? I am mostly passionate about the freedom my future in
counseling will allow me as a person. I believe research combined with empathy, pure energy,
and my fear and love of God will strengthen me more as a counselor. My interest in holistic

healing and the knowledge I can gain from the benefits it offers a large demographic of my
future clients, is going to allow my practice to stand out.
6. What concerns, obstacles, and fears do you have about scientific training?
The main concerns I have regarding scientific training is the navigating statistical software
programs and interpreting results can be challenging due to the importance of quantitative
research, while I find the time and resources to conduct meaningful research while balancing
coursework, clinical placements, and personal obligations.
7. Examine the reactions you listed in question 6; why do you think you have these
reactions?
Due to lack of experience incorporating scientific training in counseling.
