Summary
Chapter 13, Christian Integration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Programs, focuses
on the incorporation of Christian principles and the CACREP program into mental health
counseling. The beginning of the chapter talks about the significance of professional standards
and Christian values when it comes to counseling. The integration of faith-based approaches can
enhance the clients' psychological and spiritual needs, helping them overall. King and Ford

(2024) state that integrating Christian faith into counseling includes religious practices and
virtues. They emphasized that “Christian integration involves a holistic approach that respects
and responds to the spiritual dimensions of clients’ lives” (Knapp and Hull, 2024, p. 215) Virtues
such as integrity, humility, and compassion are identified as essential qualities that helps
counselors build trust and provide clients with effective care (Knapp and Hull, 2024).
Following God’s example is a biblical principle that includes a basis of service and love
from a Christian perspective that when incorporated allows for a natural integration into
counseling. The need for counselors to remain ethical and navigate conflicts that may arise
between their personal beliefs and professional counseling standards are discussed in this
chapter. Knapp and Hull (2024) emphasize the importance of maintaining a balance between an
individual's faith and adhering to the guidelines in the ACA Code of Ethics. By integrating
Christianity into the counselor training process, we are able to have a deeper personal
involvement in the lives of students, shaping professional and developmental growth (Knapp
and
Hull, 2024). While some believe it is achieved through integrating Christian faith, Knapp and Hull
(2024) explain that service and love are key practices that allow for accountability and
consistency in counselor training.
The chapter continues with the exploration of urgency for programs for clinical mental
health counselors, the benefits that can come from integrating Christianity into the programs,
and ways to have holistically integrated into the program. Knapp and Hull (2024) presented a
rationale for clinical mental health counseling programs that emphasizes the need of
considering regulatory standards while identifying practices to best support the integration of
faith. The job market can be widened for competent practitioners with the help of clinical
mental health programs that provide students with the guidance needed to achieve licensure
through graduate level programs. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor there will be an increase
in the jobs available for mental health, behavior disorder and substance abuse counselors

between 2021 and 2031 (King & Ford 2024). Comprehensive training offered in a clinical mental
health counseling program can allow those with the necessary tools to succeed. According to
Knapp and Hull (2024), there is an increase in mental health concerns in the adult population. In
2020, there was an estimated 52.9 million adults in the United States that experienced a health
concern, but only 46.2% received the appropriate treatment. According to the CDC in 2020,
there were 1.2 million suicide attempts with roughly 46,000 of them resulting in death. A
further report from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) shows that anxiety is the
most common mental health concern as it affects 19.1% of adults. These statistics show an
urgent need for counselors who are well trained and possess the competence to effectively
provide service to those struggling with mental health disorders within their community. The
Bible gives insights on depression and anxiety by reminding believers not to worry, but to rely
on Jesus as he calms the storms of life, allowing us to live without fear or anxiety. (New
International Version). As Jesus reassures us in John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I
give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not
be afraid” (New International Version, 2011, John 14:27). By integrating these teachings, we are
providing counselors with a foundation to be grounded in not only spirituality but counseling.
Chapter 13 confirms that spirituality is essential when it comes to overall wellness,
therefore making wellness a primary outcome in the counseling profession. (Knapp and Hull,
2024) With holistic and ethical care being essential for clients, we are required to be attentive
and considerate of the cultural and social context of each individual client. According to the
authors, the integration of Christian values and faith into the training and practice of clinical
mental health counseling programs is essential.
Interaction
My initial response to Chapter 13 was positive. I agree that ithe integration of Christian
faith in counseling can have a meaningful impact. The chapter provides us with a balanced

perspective on the integration of faith into clinical practice. While it can be challenging, it can
also be rewarding. With the integration of spiritual elements into therapy and respect of diverse
beliefs, counselors are able to guide clients towards a deeper healing and sense of meaning that
remains grounded in the clinical practice. This approach not only encourages the emotional
wellbeing of a client but also creates lasting growth with the acknowledgment and nurturing of
a client’s unique spiritual journey (Casali, 2025). This perspective is supported through research
as it shows that adapting counseling to each clients spirituality and religion can overall improve
the therapeutic relationship and effectiveness of treatment (Evans & Nelson, 2021) Faith is
important as it shapes the way individuals perceive themselves and the way they evaluate
solutions for possible challenges they may face. By having a counselor training program that
prepares future counselors to respectfully and effectively engage with clients’ spiritual beliefs
we are able to create a better approach for supporting mental well-being (Evans & Nelson,
2021)
An observation I made for the chapter is its emphasis on personal values , the act of
adhering to ethical principles and the need to maintain professional standards. Knapp and Hull
(2024) gave several key components needed when it comes to integrating faith into counselor
training. These components include the establishment of a theoretical framework, addressing
ethical considerations, engaging in personal reflection, developing practical skills, promoting
cultural competence and providing education (Knapp & Hull, 2024). This approach prepares
counselors to navigate complexities effectively in a real-world setting.
Through the reading I gained three insightful observations that emphasize the advocacy
for a holistic approach, in-depth discussions on ethical considerations and the emphasis on
embodying Christian virtues. The chapter talks about the emphasis of using a holistic counseling
approach that provides a more effective therapy as it discusses spiritual dimensions. Spirituality
is advocated as an important aspect when it comes to the therapeutic process. The integration
of spiritual beliefs into counseling allows for a holistic approach when it comes to addressing

both psychological and spiritual needs of clients (Knapp & Hull, 2024). Spirituality is crucial as it
affects one’s coping mechanisms and overall mental health. The holistic approach provides
balance as it addresses the spirit, body, and mind as a whole person, instead of each on their
own. This alignment allows individuals to navigate through challenges in counseling. The
authors are correct in wanting the support of a holistic approach to counseling as it allows the
counselor to focus on the overall well-being of the person.
The chapter discusses ethical considerations and the need to be well-versed when it
comes to ethical standards. A foundation is essential as clients trust counselors who can be
vulnerable, allowing trust to be a part of the therapeutic relationship. Ethical reflection is
necessary when it comes to the navigation of challenges between professional guidelines and
personal beliefs (Corey et al., 2018) According to William & Mary School of Education, (2024)
the respect of professional boundaries is a vital aspect of of ethical counseling as counselors
must be able to distinguish between a personal and professional relationship to prevent
possible harm or conflict of interest. Ethical standards are the framework of the counseling
profession as they safeguard the client and strengthen the therapeutic relationship. (Knapp &
Hull, 2024). The American Counseling Association (ACA) provides support, resources and ethical
guidelines that counselors adhere to through the ACA Code of Ethics (2014). The ACA Code of
Ethics (2014) ensures that counselors are equipped to uphold integrity, promote client welfare,
and maintain professional accountability. The code also emphasizes the importance of having
consistent ethical practices when it comes to diverse settings, therefore helping counselors'
response to challenges in the legal and ethical way. I learned that ethical considerations are very
important as they play a critical role in defining boundaries counselors must follow in practice.
Application
After reading chapter 13 I found several elements that I can apply to not only my life but
my counseling profession. By applying an approach that is holistic and integrates aspects of
CHAPTER 13 REVIEW 6
psychological and spiritual as a counselor, I am able to focus on the person as a hole while also
focusing on their spiritual well-being. This can be applied to my life as I will integrate my
personal and professional values to provide the most effective therapy for my clients. The
readings reflected the importance and need for us as counselors to be aware of the spiritual
needs of a client, while continuing to have a strong ethical foundation. (Knapp and Hull, 2024).
This will ensure that I am able to provide my clients with comprehensive care while respecting
their beliefs. With the proper training, Christian values can be incorporated into counseling. I
will integrate biblical principles into my professional training by having critical reflections on
Christian virtues, engaging in scripture and having love as a foundational value. This will require
me to stay committed to studying God’s word while also continuing my education as a future
counselor. I can have sustainable growth by not only affirming these virtues but embodying
them constantly in my professional and personal actions.
This chapter gave me a great reminder that spiritual growth is essential when it comes to
becoming a qualified counselor. With the integration of faith into all aspects of my life, I can
strengthen not only my personal well-being and practice but ensuring that I am fully equipped
to give myself and my clients the best care possible. Trust will be made with my clients by
developing a meaningful therapeutic relationship that maintains appropriate professional
boundaries and adheres to the ACA Code of Ethics (2014). This approach allows me the ability
to navigate complex situations that may occur when working with clients. These standards are
essential for counselors who are seeking to integrate faith into the process of counseling to
provide a clear framework for maintaining ethical integrity as well as honoring the clients’
spiritual values.
