Edward, your post was highly informative and the statistics you used were important for
the use of the study. In the scenario we are not told the reason the cardiologist feels Mr. Davis
needs catheterization. Depending on the medical history and indications will determine whether
the patient needs a left or right heart cath. Patient who have coronary artery disease (CAD) that
is not under control will usually need a left catheterization and those with valve issues, heart
failure may receive right or both sides. Right heart cath provides hemodynamic information on
pulmonary and tricuspid valves and pulmonary artery pressure (Shoaib et al, 2022). Placing
stents would be indicative of a blockage. The cardiologist felt strongly in doing the cath and stent
placement and Mr. Davis wanted neither procedure and will now be on medication and follow-
up from the procedure for several years.
During my time in critical care I learned that cardiac caths can be performed through the
femoral artery or radial artery. The radial artery is the preferred method due to there being less
risk of infection, less chance of infection, and the patient does not have to lie flat for a certain
amount of time. Certain surgeons have a specific amount of time they prefer the patient to lie flat
or in an intervention is done it increases the amount of time to four hours. Some risks and
complications from the procedure can be a hematoma or bleeding at incision site,
pseudoaneurysm, arteriovenous fistula, dissection, thrombosis and embolism, vascular
complications, myocardial infection, stroke, allergic reaction, dissection of the great vessels,
aeroembolism, acute renal failure, or death (Manda & Baradhi, 2022). He that answereth a
matter before he heareth it, It is folly and shame unto him (King James Version, KJV, 2013).
One of the best attributes those in healthcare can have or learn is that of listening to the patient.
This does not mean it will in any way sway the decision of the trained professional, but to listen
to how the patient feels in a situation may aid in how to better explain so the patient feels better.
