"Erikson created the Psychosocial Development Theory to add emphasis on the
development of an individual across their lifespan (Wong et al., 2021). Erikson’s theory
consists of eight developmental stages ranging from infancy to older adulthood and
focuses on the impact of social, biological, and behavioral factors have on development
(Wong et al., 2021). As one develops in each stage, they are identifying personal
strengths and weaknesses to aid in proceeding to the next developmental stage (Wong
et al., 2021). It is important to note exposure to trauma may temporarily disrupt the
progression of the individual’s development in the current stage (Timm et al., 2020; Wong
et al. 2021).
The fifth stage of Erikson’s development theory is classified as the industry vs inferiority
stage and consists of adolescents between the ages of twelve and eighteen (Wong et al.,
2021). During this stage, adolescents begin the process of seeking to understand
themselves and their world. Individuals within this stage have difficulty adapting to their
surroundings, demonstrate unhealthy behavioral patterns, and struggle with identity
confusion. For this stage, I observed a fourteen-year-old female during her intake
process for psychiatric care. The adolescent presented with a depressed affect and with
suicidal ideation. The adolescent shared the relationship with their parents had recently
become dysfunctional due to their “coming out” and self-harming. According to Wong et
al. (2021) adolescents in this stage begin to develop personal values and belief systems
apart from their parents which can increase their likelihood of distancing themselves from
their parents, participating in risky behavior, and seeking approval from their peers.
Throughout the intake process, the adolescent stated they are “accepted” by their friends
but not their family. The approval seeking, identity exploration, and risky behavior noted
in the adolescents support their development in the noted stage.
The second observation took place in a substance abuse group therapy session. The
individual, a male age sixty-seven presented with feelings of guilt and shame associated
with his twenty-year alcohol dependency. Erikson’s stages of development place this
individual in the integrity vs despair stage. Individuals within this stage reflect on their
