Abstract
This paper is reviewing the assessments taken to analyze overall wellness and life
balance in various areas of my life. I will take an in-depth look on how I scored on each
assessment and how I see the results reflected in my life currently. Critical attention is placed on
how I perceived life changes, the potential future illness the stress form those changes could
cause, and I how can mitigate that future illness. In addressing these potential life stressors
emphasis is places on social support systems that allows to management stress properly to
carefully work through challenges. Along with acknowledging the stress factors in my life, we
consider ways to implement change to create a more balance life as it pertains to intellectual,
physical and psychological wellness. Stating changes that need to be made, being intentional
about changes, finding the will and desire to change and lastly finding a course of action to
physically implement change is the mode of operation concluded to achieve tangible evidence
of complete life balance and total life wellness.

Personal Assessment
Upon taking the stress reaction inventory assessment, I came to a rather alarming result. The
number I received after tallying the events that pertained to me was 598, which is a staggering
number in my opinion. I figured because I handled stress relatively well that it wasn’t until I seen
it on paper as opposed to living it and resolving the issues on a daily basis that I realized I’m
countering a great number of stressors in my life. A few of these life events such as being
pregnant, beginning school for my master’s degree, and getting married all within a matter of a 8
month span are things I wanted and somewhat prepared for. On the other hand, losing my last
surviving grandparent, my spouse changing work fields are things that I did not foresee taking
place in my life within this time. However, now that I have had the chance to see these things
actualized before me, qualitatively on paper, I am now better equipped to acknowledge how
these results are reflecting in my own life currently. I primarily gathered the stress of most life
sectors and tunneled it through anxiousness and stress of school. Also, I’m able to reflect on how
much I worry about the transitional phase my family is in as my husband and I prepare to leave
the leave the military and seek employment in new working fields. That stress then lends itself to
financial stress, naturally. All this coupled with expanding our family of 3to 4 as I prepare to
give birth in less than 14 weeks. Again, because I generally have an optimistic disposition
concerning all area of life, and because my faith is my foundation, I haven’t internalized these
life events as “stressful” per say, rather I see them as minor roadblocks or challenges that my
husband and I need to prepare for and we tackle them together head on. This leads to the
incorporation of the assessments. Although I didn’t have a true gage for my life changing events
that potential could lead to higher levels of stress and the likelihood of illness in the near future, I
must say a great deal of combating the potential stress factors in my life has to do with my
support system, self-

care strategies and overall life balance. Through the varies assessments my results indicate that
across the board I maintain relatively average outcomes. For example the life balance
assessment, while I was able to see “the reason my family’s career transition isn’t more of a
stress for me is because we’ve dedicated time and energy into financial literacy, budgeting, and
money management.” That is how I see the results of this assessment reflected in my current
life. Following this mode of operation, the self-care assessment results show that my emotional
care is strongly supported in comparison to my psychological care which is how I am able to
rationalize my ability to properly identity my feeling and address then particularly through self-
care actions be it finding things that make me laugh or seeking comfort in activities or objects
that comfort me. Yet in the area of psychological-care I realized that need to decrease stress in
my life and make time for self-reflection which could look like allowing my husband to spend
time with my daughter in the afternoon while I go outside to meditate and journal
Lastly one of the higher scoring assessments that yielded the most positive response was the
multidimensional scale of perceived social support. What I gathered from this test is that I have a
strong sense of social support from family and friends and most importantly my significant
other. The greatest factor outside of spiritual wellness that allows me to perceive potential
stressful events as low-grade or mid-life changes is due mostly to the impact of husbands’
support for me. Because he is around when I need him, because I can share my joys and sorrows
(such as celebrating life new life in my pregnancy and mourning the death of my great-
grandmother) and because he cares about my feelings I have the strength and capability to assess
life obstacles and tackle them head on without feeling dreadfully overwhelmed.

Wellness strategies
The areas that could benefit from greater attention are spiritual wellness, Physical
wellness and intellectual wellness. The most immediate change that needs to be made regarding
these areas is being intentional. What I mean by that is having a more clear and direct approach
to specific subcategories that consist of physical, intellectual, and spiritual wellness.
Furthermore, I need to honor the thought’s and mindsets that will lead to advancement in the
aforementioned areas. If I randomly have a thought to go for walk and get some exercise I am
then faced with an opportunity to take 15-20 minutes of my time to walk around the
neighborhood or to stay in the house and scroll through social media. I must not make excuses or
talk myself out of the chance to enhance my physical wellness instead I must honor that initial
thought and carry it out in action, thus leading to small yet meaningful effort in building my
physical wellness.
Another change that needs to be made is the increase of courage I have to make the change.
Often, I coward away from the opportunity to change because of the amount of work needed on
my behalf or my lack of self-confidence. This evident in me prolonging the decision to apply for
graduate school. I did not think I was smart enough, so I did not have the confidence to apply. I
also shied away from the thought of a master’s degree because the workload was daunting, and I
feared that assignments would be too hard for me to complete. I now know none of these things
were the case, I just had to build the courage and take the chance amid being scared. Lastly, I
need to change my thoughts around the areas that need improvement. There is no way I can
begin on a path of strengthening my spiritual wellness if I have a false sense of foundation in
my spiritual walk. I mustn’t think “everything is fine, I don’t need any help in this area.” I
should instead change my inward dialogue to “hey, you’ve got you emotional wellness
uncontrol but

when’s the last time you meditated deeply in God’s Word? Have you reached out to your
accountability partner about the struggles you face regarding sin lately?” That line of questioning
will spark a ripple effect of change in me. It will allow me to be honest with myself, to take
inventory on my spiritual wellness leading to greater chance of enhancement in that area. Those
are the changes that need to be made in order to see strengthening in the area of spirituality. This
same concept is to be applied in my psychological and intellectual wellness if change is to take
place. I must seek out things that stimulate me mentally, seek vocations and hobbies that interest
me, put intention behind these desires and follow up action. Intentionality must first be in effect.
Then desire and action will follow suite.
The steps that I am willing to take to reach my goal of implementing these changes are simple,
everyday acts, spread out overtime to ensure that I can realistically see and achieve them that I
may avoid overload that could lead stress and vicious cycle . In regard to physical wellness I’ve
already began to implement changes. I have begun to transition my family to a plant-based eating
lifestyle. With support from my husband I rid the fridge of processed junk food and replaces it
with ample amount of fresh fruit and vegetables. I also began to create meal plans that encourage
me get in the kitchen and cook instead of ordering take-out. This has allowed me to involve my
toddler in preparing meals that she will enjoy as well. This time spent with family also enhances
my psychological wellness as it something that I enjoy doing. I plan to focus primarily on
physical for 4 to 6 weeks to ensure consistency then I will transition to intellectual and spiritual.
The goal is to track tangible progress and not to overload as mentioned before. I believe this
methodology will lead me to the change necessary to see an overall enhance in wellness for all
areas of my life, resulting in balance.
