Abstract
In this paper, we examine the importance of developing a strong professional identity as a
counselor. The counseling field is young compared to other professions in the mental health
field. Although there have been strides made in the field over decades, there is still confusion
regarding what the role and responsibility of a counselor is. It is up to the future counselor to
learn what it means to be a professional counselor so then he or she can then educate others. By
advocating for the field counselors can unify the profession to lessen the confusion. There are
challenges with developing a strong professional identity in the field, like licensure portability,
and educational requirements that vary from state to state. Therefore, it is important for
counselors to join organizations to continue their own training and contribute to the counseling
field. With the continued growth of the field, the future of unified profession is forth coming.
