Define mediation and explain whether you think a third party should intervene as a
mediator, and why. The text describes mediation as; a neutral third party facilitates communication between
the conflicting parties so that they may work out their own mutually acceptable agreement. I think that a
mediator is very applicable in this case because it would allow the third party to present the mothers concerns
to the sister in a neutral manner and vice versa. Perhaps with an unbiased party involved, the mother and
daughter could see each others sides of the argument better.
Describe the role of mediator for whomever intervenes as a third party. The role of the mediator is
to repair any damaged lines of communication between the conflicting parties. However, it is important for the
mediator to allow both parties to fully communicate with minimal interference. Ultimately, the mediator is
serving somewhat as a referee while both parties try to resolve conflict.
List and briefly describe the steps the third party should go through for this hypothetical
mediation. First the mediator must bring the conflicting parties together and establish ground rules for the
discussion that is going to take place. Next the mediator will listen to both sides of the conflict and attempt to
establish common ground that the two can meet on in this conflict resolution. If this is legal mediation, the
mediator will then document the resolution for both parties.

a. What kind of conflicts did this person encounter? I would describe the conflict faced by the subject
in this case to be a blend of Workplace Bullying and also Conflict Due to Differences in Role Expectations. I
believe that the other employees expect the new guy to not contribute very much and therefore brushed them
aside, it could be perceived as bullying, but I would not say it is intentional bullying.
b. What stage of development is this group? I would say this group is in the storming phase, they are an
established group that is submitting ideas to one another in a way of establishing their role in the group.

c. How have roles created conflict in this group? Roles have created conflict in this group because the
veteran employees are treating the new employee as somewhat of a bystander or non-contributor, despite the
fact that the new employee is very eager to contribute.
d. What strategies from this chapter did he or she use to address the conflicts that
arose? The chose a passive-aggressive communication option by going to the boss instead of communicating
their frustrations to the team members
e. What strategies from this chapter might have produced better outcomes? The conflict could have
been better addressed by adapting the Six Steps to Effective Confrontation. The could have prepared their
approach, set-aside a time and place to address their issue(s), they could have then had their interpersonal
conflict at the proper time and place to express their concerns, they then could consider the views of other
group members concerning their roles in the team, then all parties could come to an agreement on the matter,
and finally follow up on the solution.
