In the video “Braving the Wilderness” the 7 Elements of Trust was discussed by Dr. Brene
Brown. I believe that 7 elements of trust can be use as a guideline to navigate through conflict,
and help individuals engage in conflict situation. Dr. Brown examines the 7 elements of trust by
using the acronym “Braving”; B is boundaries, R is reliability, A is accountability, V is vault, I is
integrity, N is non judgement, and G is generosity. Dr. Brown explains that boundaries must be
set, and if you don’t know what they are you should ask. I believe that setting boundaries is like
creating rules that must be followed in order for the conflict to be resolved. For example, one
may set a boundary that no one will raise their voice during a conversation, and no one will
interrupt the other party while they are speaking. This is a boundary that I have personal set for
myself that helps me engage in conflict dialogue, because I have a tendience when upset to raise
my voice and cut other people off when then are speaking. Dr. Brown explains that reliability is
when you do what you say and say what you do. Romans 10:17 states, “ So faith comes from
hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ (ESV)”. As Christian we must make sure our
actions match our words, and be an example of what Christ expects. Dr. Brown explains that
accountability is when you don’t blame others, but hold them accountable in a straightforward
way. I think hold other and yourself accountable is a great way to engage in conflict resolution.
Dr. Brown explains the vault as area of confidentiality, where it is not okay to share others
personal information. When someone shares others information it can make you trust them less.
Dr. Brown explains non-judgement is as not judging others, and being able to ask for help
without being Judge. Dr. Brown explains that generosity should be viewed as when somethings
happens you assume positive intent. Matthew 18:15-17 states, “If your brother sins against you,
go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your
brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may
be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to
the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax
collector (ESV)”. I believe that if the 7 elements are implemented into how people discuss
everyday issues a lot of conflict would be resolved in an effective manner. I believe that being
non- judgemental and generous goes hand in hand. As christians we should strive to be
non-judgmental, and think of the glass half full instead of half empty.

I agree that that conflict and conflict resolution should alway be approached from a humanizing
approach. I also agree that trust is a element that must be established by all parties in a conflict so
that a resolution can be reached, and so that communication can be open, honest, and positive. I
believe that during conflict a leader must establish trust, and maintain that trust throughout the
conflict. If fragmented alliance are created during conflict resolution it can be detrimental to the
effectiveness of the conflict resolution. One point that Dr. Brown address that I will incorporate
into my own conflict resolution is setting boundaries, and being confident in how I address the
conflict. I believe that self worth can play apart in how someone deals with conflict. As a
probation office I believe that dealing with conflict is a major part of my job. I have to deal with
conflict situations with coworkers and offenders, that has challenged my skill in dealing with
conflict. I believe that Dr. Brown’s 7 elements of trust will benefit me when dealing with conflict
in the future. Isaiah 26: 7-9 states, “The way of the righteous is smooth; O Upright One, make
the path of the righteous level. Indeed, while following the way of Your judgments, O LORD,
We have waited for You eagerly; Your name, even Your memory, is the desire of our souls. At
night my soul longs for You, Indeed, my spirit within me seeks You diligently; For when the
earth experiences Your judgments The inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.” As
christians we will face conflict on a daily basises, but we must remember that we are a reflection
of Christ.
