CQ Assessment Assignment
To be as effective as one can be, there must be a clear understanding of the importance of
Cultural Intelligence. Dr. Temple shares in the class video Cultural Intelligence: Essential for 21st
Century Leadership that understanding Cultural Intelligence is important because it relates to
everything done in ministry. (Cultural Intelligence Video 0:41). In doing the CQ Assessment, the
writer of this paper has been able to get an assessment that shows his strengths and weaknesses
so that the multicultural ministry he is working in can be better served.
The four concepts that are assessed in the study are relevant to the ministry because they
measure the individual’s capacity to work, handle, and produce an outcome that will benefit the
church as a whole body made up of people from different cultures and traditions. Serving is a
community of believers from North America, South and Central America, North Korea, South
Africa, and Japan, the need to understand how to handle the different cultures takes a lot of CQ
knowledge. This assessment focuses on the individual’s skills and capabilities to ensure that the
most effective work is being done to succeed in a multicultural environment.
Four specific areas of CQ were assessed in the individual survey. CQ Drive (Motivational
CQ), CQ Knowledge (Cognitive CQ), CQ Strategy (Metacognitive CQ), and CQ Action
(Behavioral CQ). Each one of these areas has been compared to other CQ scores around the
world which give the assessment robust feedback to help the individual strengthen the weakest
areas and keep doing what he is doing in the strong areas.
CQ Drive was a high score for this writer. The self-rated CQ Drive was marked 16 points
higher than the worldwide margin. Confidence, joy, and effectiveness are traits needed for any
leader to be effective in leading in a multicultural environment. Being personal and keeping a

level of interest for other people allows this writer to connect and build strong relationships with
people from all different cultures.
CQ Knowledge was also higher than the worldwide norm by 39 points. Being able to
understand the similarities and differences between people’s cultures and ways of doing ministry
has allowed this writer to be able to work well with an African brother and a North Korean sister.
Being intentional in the way in which people are being placed in the right environment so that
their talent can be put to use instead of competing with one another has been one way to make a
good team become a great team.
CQ Strategy assessment was 19 points greater than the worldwide norm. Being sacrificial
in the manner in which the individual does ministry opens a way to create an environment in
which a strategy works for everyone and makes everyone become an effective part of the whole
ministry. Being able to be aware of people’s strengths and weaknesses allows this writer to plan
wisely to ensure every key player will be as successful as possible in the best possible position.
CQ Action assessment came in 20 points greater than the worldwide norm. Adapting to
different possibilities at any given time takes a lot of effort and intentionality from the leader.
Being attentive and being able to adapt to a multicultural environment requires the leader to
build a strong relationship with the people he is working with.
Being someone from El Salvador and having lived with people from all over the world
has helped this writer see how important it is to be aware of differences in people from different
parts of the world. In addition, having worked in hotels where people from all over the world
stay and expect to have their accommodation as close to home as possible has given me enough
information to have learned to not just understand, but enjoy the differences between people.
Most importantly, learned how not to complain about the differences but to find common ground

between different views and put the strength points to work for the benefit of everyone involved
in the ministry in which everyone is serving.
This course and this assessment have given clarity and concise understanding to any
leader in a multicultural environment who wishes to do the most effective job in his current
position and anywhere else he may one day move to. Nobody can deny that in today’s world,
leadership has to deal with a multicultural challenge. The workforce requires the leader to have
concise knowledge of different cultures, at school, the challenge is the same, young people must
deal with other young people who think, dress, eat, and do things differently. In ministry, is the
same in the sense that in the congregation, people from all over the world come to seek spiritual
guidance. “Cultural intelligence (CQ) offers a better way… [that] can help you navigate any
intercultural situation.” (Livermore, 2015, p. 3).
Increasing the value of CQ in the community requires the leader to stay current with what
is happening in the different cultures in which one is involved. “Leadership commitment is
demonstrated by integrating cultural intelligence” (Livermore, 2015, p. 210). This action requires
the leader to be sacrificial, personal, and intentional in the way people from different cultures are
treated, taught, and empowered for the benefit of the whole body.
Another way to increase the value of CQ in the ministry is to “integrate cultural
intelligence across all functions and as part of the strategic plan.” (Livermore, 2015, p. 210).
Sharing with every member of the team the four CQ capabilities that each one of them must
apply to their dedication in fulfilling the visions, mission, and purpose that each one of them has
been called to accomplish. Teaching them that there is joy in the fact that there is a culturally
diverse experience, allows them to see that when a multicultural environment is open to
culturally diverse experiences, there is a great chance that the ministry will benefit from it, and

therefore, everyone will reap the benefits. Sharing with everyone involved in the ministry that as
a group, there can be differences, but those differences will not hinder the mission it will open
new ways of doing ministry to expand the ministry.
In Jesus’ Great Commission, He calls on his disciples to go into the world and as they
would go, they would go and multiply. Matt 28:19 (NIV) Therefore go and make disciples of all
nations… this implies that the disciples would have to deal with people from many different
cultural backgrounds. Jesus gave them instructions and lessons as to how to deal with people.
Love them, care for them, serve them, be humble, and let others be above them. In the Sermon
on the Mount (Matt 5) Jesus Christ was imparting the very essence of CQ to His disciples. Jesus
was teaching about the proper character each leader must live by.
In the same way, the process remains the same. For today’s leaders to effectively affect
the ministry, they must be aware that a good disciple understands that people are hurting,
mourning, humbled, thirsty, and a lot are being persecuted. However, when the leader leads from
Jesus’ point of view, he will encourage the new disciples to move to a situation in which the CQ
Drive, CQ Knowledge, CQ Strategy, and CQ Action will enable the individual to go and make
more disciples effectively. Every leader in the making will benefit greatly if he or she is
empowered by the positive effects that CQ Intelligence offers everyone.
These CQ scores give the individual a better understanding of their capacity and the
ability to see where, and what scores must improve if the desire is to be effective in any capacity
and the middle of any multicultural environment. Better action plans can be developed so that the
whole group or ministry can achieve its goals. Also, attention will be drawn to areas that need
work so that one can avoid multiple potential problems. Hosea 4:6 (NIV) My people are
destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as

my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children. After
reading the textbooks, and going over this assessment, this writer understands the importance of
growing the ministry by allowing people from many cultures to come and be able to put to work
the gifts that each one of them has received for the well-being of the whole ministry.
