Generic Rehabilitation Programs
Can generic rehabilitation programs be adapted to meet the needs of various offender
populations?
Generic rehabilitation would be effective in meeting the needs of offenders. The
concept of rehabilitation is based on the fact that there is a particular factor influencing criminal
behavior. However, it does not mean that an individual did not have a choice about committing
the crime. The decision by the offender to engage in criminal behavior is significantly influenced
by their social surrounding, biological makeup, psychological factor, and others. Generic
rehabilitation makes sense because if other factors never influenced the crime, but solely on
rational decision-making, then there is nothing about the offender's behavior that would change.
Since other factors are involved, what offenders need to alter these factors and change their
behavior is available through a rehabilitation program. Society expects the offender not to re-
offend after reintegration, but this cannot happen until the root cause of their criminal behavior is
addressed (Whelan, 2020). Therefore, a generic rehabilitation program would help to repair the
negative behavior and rebuild positive behavior. Even God called for Israelites to amend their
ways so that they could be acceptable to Him again (Jer. 26:13 New International Version).
Therefore, instead of locking offenders away for years, providing them with an opportunity to
mend their behavior through rehabilitation offers them the chance to one day become productive
members of society.
Is there a need for gender-specific programming?
Gender-specific programming is essential when implementing a generic rehabilitation
program for offenders. In recent years, the number of female offenders has been growing
significantly. Although there is an overwhelming number of male inmates, both genders are

represented in the criminal justice system. Having a gender-specific program is essential and
promotes successful client outcomes. Such a program makes it possible to pay attention to
specific issues affecting each gender (Dahl & Mogstad, 2020). Developing a gender-sensitive
program makes it possible to address the realities of female and male offenders' lives. A gender-
specific rehabilitation program encourages open communication with the offender than when it is
one program for all genders. The enhanced communication makes it easy to identify the
offenders' needs, which helps determine the best methods to help them. Men have specific issues
that could contribute to criminal behavior. Some of them have to do with stereotypes and cultural
factors. A gender-specific rehabilitation program addresses some issues that could be easily
overlooked if it were one program for both genders. Even the social factors that cause a male
offender to choose a life of crime might differ from those of a female offender. Therefore, a
gender-specific program realizes successful outcomes because it can identify these issues.
