Question 11
Needs Grading
Discuss the various types of stress a police officer may experience, and give
examples of each.
Selected
Answer:
Vicarious stress is stress that results from interacting with or observing
others. An example of vicarious stress would be an officer responding to a
fatal car crash and dealing with the emotions of family members and friends
who are on scene. It is not only the horror of seeing a mangled body in a car,
but having to keep your emotions calm and staying professional when dealing
with the public onscene.
Occupational stress is stress resulting from the demands, risks, and dangers
experienced on the job. Occupational stress occurs everyday on the job. It
can involve everything from conducting to a high-risk traffic stop, or
responding to a shooting, or even just dealing with a person who is
uncooperative.
Professional stress is stress resulting from the organizational-logistical
demands of the job. This type of stress is one that officers feel due to being a
part of an organization with a rank structure in which there is little that can be
done to change the system or rules that are in place. There are many
examples of this such as shift work impacts on family or free time, poor
decisions from management, lack of training or resources and lack of
perceived support from the chain of command.

mechanism in a stressful situation.
Selected
Answer:
Officer survival training is an extremely important part of creating and
maintaining a police officer. Officers must learn to condition their minds and
bodies and maintain homeostasis in order to combat extremely stressful
situations they may encounter during critical incidents. Police officers are
instructed in methods such as locus of control and self-efficiency in order to
effectively use control to buffer some of the effects of a extremely stressful
situations. Officer survival training, active threat training and shoot-don't-shoot
training helps officers achieve their optimal performance level by incorporating
a controlled stressful environment that helps condition their minds and bodies
to not only survive, but to win on the streets.
