Question 11
Your Answer:
Discuss the various types of stress a police ocer may
experience, and give examples of each.
Harmening & Gamez (2016) provide three types of stress police
ocers may experience. They include vicarious stress, occupational
stress, and professional stress. Vicarious stress is dened as stress
resulting indirectly from interacting with or observing others in crisis.
Examples include seeing trauma such as deadly trac accidents or
deadly res. For police ocers, vicarious emotions are fear, despair,
hopelessness, and hatred. The second stress is occupational.
Occupational stress results from the demands, risks, and dangers

experienced. For example, police ocers must constantly look for any
threat or possible attack. Finally, police ocers can experience
professional stress resulting from the organizational-logistical
demands of the job. Professional stress may include the impact of shift
work on the ocer's family, lack of respect from the public, and
unnecessary paperwork.

Question 12
Your Answer:
Discuss the force continuum, and provide examples of force at
each level.
The force continuum is dened by Harmening & Gamez (2016) as a
range of force options available to the police and correctional ocers
that can be employed at a level consistent with the severity of the
situation. Ocers are trained to use the least amount of force in given
cases. The ve levels of the force continuum include verbal commands,
the threat of force, nonlethal compliance techniques, disabling
techniques, and, nally, deadly force. Verbal commands are the lowest
level of force. They include maintaining a professional and assertive
demeanor without appearing or sounding aggressive to gain the
compliance of a suspect. The threat of force involves threatening the
use of physical force or a weapon in response to non-compliance. If a
suspect does not respond to verbal commands, pepper spray, an angry
police dog, or a weapon may be used. Nonlethal compliance
techniques involve an ocer attempting to gain physical control of a
suspect without causing disabling injury. Nonlethal methods include an
ocer using pressure points and take-down techniques to gain power.
The fourth level involves disabling techniques designed to incapacitate
the individual physically. This may involve physically sticking the
suspect, pepper spray, using a taser, or even an expandable baton.
Finally, level ve involves lethal force. When ocers resort to this level,
they take action that could reasonably be expected to result in death.
Forms of deadly force include shooting an individual, striking them in
the head with a baton, or using a squad car to drive them off the road in
high-speed pursuits.
