Describe the UCR/NIBRS and the NCVS programs. How does each system serve a
purpose in collecting reporting data. Compare and contrast the two programs.
What advantages does NIBRS have over the traditional UCR?
Selected
Answer: The UCR (Uniform Crime Report) and NCVS (National Crime
Victimization Survey) are both programs that collect crime
statistics and data. The UCR is information that is gathered
from all the crimes reported to police agencies across the
nation whereas the NCVS receives data from victims and
the results will only show voluntary participation and the
information that victims want to share. Both programs
have a goal to collect data statistics on crime but neither
have all the data because there are a great deal of victims
that do not report being victimized.

Gun crime and debate about gun control was brought to a heightened discussion
in 2012 because of several mass murders. Comment on the role of gun control
and the constitutional guarantees of the right to bear arms. Include analysis of
the Newtown and Aurora shootings and the effect they had on the communities
and gun control.

Answer:
Guns and gun crime seem to pervade American culture. In the
2012 Newtown, Connecticut, school shootings 28 people died,
including the shooter and 20 first graders. Also in 2012, James
Egan Holmes opened fire in a crowded theater in Aurora,
Colorado, during a midnight showing of the movie The Dark
Knight Rises, killing 12 people and injuring 58 others. In 2011,
another random mass shooting claimed the lives of six people
and wounded 13 people, including U.S. Representative Gabrielle
Giffords, who was shot through the head. These three events,
happening in rapid succession, led to strident calls for gun control
at both the state and national level. Constitutional guarantees of
the right to bear arms have combined with historical
circumstances to make ours a well-armed society. Guns are used
in many types of crimes. Both federal and state governments
have responded to the public concern over the ready availability
of handguns. In 1994, Congress passed the Brady Handgun
Violence Prevention Act.
