PRISON PRIVATIZATION 2
Abstract
The United States of America has the largest amount of people incarcerated in the world. When
the government controlled all of these facilities, some problems became prevalent to include, but
not limited to, funding for the prisons, space to house the inmates, and lack of staffing to
perform the daily functions of the prisons. The solution to fix these problems was privatizing
these government-run facilities. Since then private prisons have been part of the judicial system
for years and specifically housing for inmates. The Office of Justice Programs (2018) defines
private prisons as "prison facilities run by private prison corporations whose services and beds
are contracted out by state governments or the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP)." Private prison
companies usually have contractual agreements with the government. Privatizing prisons has
not come without controversy in health care, staffing, lack of living space, and incarcerating
inmates for profit. No matter if the government or private companies control prisons; there will
always be fundamental concerns for the America Justice System. Furthermore, this paper will
examine two articles on the American prison privatization and the reasons for advocacy or
opposition of these types of prisons.
