Charles Watson, one of the “Manson Family” members responsible for the
Tate/LaBianca murders, hired an attorney, Bill Boyd, for his upcoming court hearings.
Watson signed a retainer agreement allowing Boyd to claim all of his property, as well as
anything valuable he might get for his story. During the time Boyd worked for Watson,
he recorded an interview contained in 8 cassette tapes which he kept in his office. In
September 1976, Watson waived his attorney/client privilege and requested Boyd to
cooperate fully with Chaplain Raymond G. Hoekstra in relation to his biography.
Masterson & Wallace (2017) used qualitative research to find that “Boyd provided
Hoekstra with copies of the tapes in exchange for $48,000 from the International Prison
Ministry, which Boyd credited against Watson’s outstanding legal bills.” (p. 130).
Roughly 30 years later, Boyd died and his law firm was filed for bankruptcy. Linda
Payne was appointed as a trustee and was reached out to by a man trying to buy the tapes
but she reached out to the Trustee’s office and Watson. In order to turn the tapes over to
the LAPD, Payne filed a motion to the bankruptcy court. Watson objected to this release,
arguing that his waiver was limited to Hoekstra’s listening only. The bankruptcy court
eventually overruled his objection and the LAPD gained control. No investigations are
currently active, however, the tapes, if needed, can be investigated. This shows more of
the mystery behind Manson and proves

that we do not know everything about him.
