DSM Summaries Set Two
The DSM-5 categorizes Obsessive-compulsive and Related Disorders into eight different
sections. According to the DSM-5, the given disorder involves persistent thought that results in
obsessive behavior. Obsessive behaviors may results in frustration or distress if the individual
who is suffering from the disorder does not complete their task.
The DSM-5 sections obsessive disorders into eight categories. The categories include Obsessive-
compulsive and Related Disorders, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Hoarding Disorder, Hair pulling
disorder, Excoriation Disorder, Substance-induced OCD, a disorder due to medical conditions,
other specified related disorders.
Obsessive-compulsive and Related Disorders present as an obsession or compulsion an individual
has that disrupts their daily living. Individuals with OCD, suffer from an obsession with an item
or task that takes up a lot of time out of their day. Body Dysmorphic Disorder presents as an
individual suffering from persistently identifying flaws in their physical self. Hoarding presents an
individual having difficulty separating from physical objects in large quantities. The hair-pulling
disorder presents as an individual pulling their hair out, multiple times a day as a result of
distress. Excoriation Disorder presents as an individual consistently picking at their skin, various
areas of their body. Substance-induced OCD presents as an individual suffering from OCD
symptoms due to a reaction to the substance.
