Overview
The substance related category contains 10 different categories of substances. This
includes: alcohol; caffeine; cannabis; hallucinogens; inhalants; opioids; sedatives, hypnotics, or
anxiolytics; stimulants; tobacco; and other (or unknown) substances. This category also contains

behavioral, and physiological symptoms indicating that the individual continues using the
substance despite significant substance-related problems.

the individual. It is a mix of behavioral and physical symptoms, and is often combined with
another substance use issue.
Alcohol Intoxication- This happens soon after alcohol is ingested. It creates problems with
behavior and psychological. There are many symptoms that fall into this category- slurred
speech, staggering, incoordination. It can become life threatening.
Alcohol Withdrawal- When an individual decreases alcohol intake and it leads them to having
physical or psychological symptoms afterwards. These symptoms affect their daily living. They
usually develop from hours to days after reduction.
Unspecified Alcohol Related Disorder-This is when the individual has an alcohol related issue
but does not have enough symptoms to meet the full criterion for any of the other diagnoses.
DSM-5-TR (2nd)
Caffeine Intoxication- Recently ingestion of caffeine that leads to 5 or more of the listed
symptoms listed. These symptoms significantly affect the individual’s important areas of
functioning and is not better explained by another diagnosis.
