ALLENDER JOURNAL 2
Allender Journal Assignment- Chapter Four
In chapter four Allender talks about our passions that motivate us to choose one path over
the other path. When I first started my bachelor’s, I was convinced that I was going to become a
pediatrician, but as I progressed in my bachelor’s I felt myself becoming less interested in the
program. I had decided to change my major and my mentor had suggested that I take some
counseling classes. My mentor stated that he thought that I would be a great fit for the counseling
field. Once I began to take counseling and psychology classes I found myself enjoying the
courses and decided to change my major. At the time I was working at a nursing home as a nurse
assistant and I had always enjoyed helping others, therefore I felt that choosing a career in the
counseling field would be a great fit for me. I would say that something that deeply moves me
would be helping those in need or those who are struggling with addiction or mental health. I
currently work at a detox center as an aftercare coordinator and when clients call our center and
express that they are doing well and that they are thankful for the services that we provided for
them it motivates me to keep going and continue working hard. When I am not working, I enjoy
going hiking or spending time on my boyfriend’s farm. I enjoy spending time outside and
enjoying nature. I find the greatest pleasure and joy when I am on vacation, me and my
boyfriend enjoy going on vacation to different places. When we go on vacation, I always try my
best to get out of my comfort zone and try new things whether that is trying out a new activity or
new food. I mostly enjoy and find pleasure when I spend time with my boyfriend, we share some
of the same interests and he is a great support to me and has always motivated me to do better.
He has many of the same goals that I do and is very self-driven, we always try to motivate each
other to do better. My boyfriend has always pushed me to try new things that I thought I would
never enjoy but find myself actually enjoying. When we first began to date, I was not much of an

outside person, but he taught me to like nature and taught me how to do things like ride a horse
or enjoy hiking. I believe God crossed our paths because he knew that I needed that motivation
and support system to continue to push myself to accomplish my goals and to teach me how to
build a closer relationship with God. As a future counselor I plan to motivate other and help them
accomplish their goals by assisting them in any way I can as long as it is in my scope. I have
always enjoyed helping others and have always found myself in job positions where I help others
whether that is in a nursing home or in a detox program.
