SIGMA & DMAIC IN A MANUFACTURING PLANT
Abstract
The Six Sigma DMAIC process is getting to know the existing processes and introducing
another new approach that progressively increases the quality of goods & services. It increases
productivity and minimizes costs. It is an organization's main goal as it increases the profit margin
by striving to satisfy the customers' target (Al-Aomar & Youssef, 2006). The machine efficiency
is calculated based on production as per the given duration considering time as the scarce resource
that needs to be utilized for the organization's progress. The process reduces defects, but there is
another way of improving efficiency. For overall improvement, the industries prefer the six sigma
method as the general efficiency improvement. It is the method used by the world-class to other
high-quality levels. Approaches are adapted towards pursuing six sigma methodologies: Define,
Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC). It is the sixth process of solving the
problem.DMAIC is not included in six sigma and is the framework of improvement (Hakimi et
al., 2018).
In recent days factories are experiencing downtime problems during production hours due
to technical issues like hours lost in the output, change over, and the cycle time deviation. They
find issues and get possible solutions to the problems. For process improvement to occur,
appropriate analysis needs to be followed, such as Pareto analysis, EVOP, and ANOVA. This data
gives the process improvement using the DMAIC approach as it is the actual process for waste
identification and process improvement using statistical tools. The major problem is that downtime
happens after seven months. The overall efficiency of the process is to get down to forty-two
percent as Pareto analysis to find critical issues affecting rest and come up with possible solutions.

Introduction
In various manufacturing places, problems arise in downtime reduction of machine
utilization, improving quality, reducing downtime, utilization of machine, & time reduction cycle.
The main purpose of enhancing the DMAIC approach (Define-Measure, Analyze-Improve-
Control) is very useful. Doing the process again enhances further identification and improves the
excess structural thinking, which is the thorough and systematic use of the DMAIC process.
Decisions are made based on measurements and information. The technique and tools are used to
analyze phase issues that might not be exposed and the approach that brings a fresh way of thinking
which brings process establishment & look at the longer term. It implements the DMAIC
occasionally about the fast fixes. The approach leads to long-term approach resolutions established
in business that complicate the process and fix problems quickly.
Case study plan
The main leading environment services use DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve,
and Control) method to improve the internal software systems. Its main purpose is to reduce
downtime system and the time it takes to fix the software. In general, it increases the investment
rate (ROI) and ensures customers are satisfied. On the business background of environmental
service company they collect, process, recycle, and dispose of harmful waste materials from the
industries and automotive customers. The company has many branches in the United States that
offer customers' premises services. Each department serves customers according to their needs on
a given day as they determine the order of service execution. The execution of the order is based
on customers' preferences, pre-determined time windows, and resources for the performance of
the service effectively.

The route management team uses its organizational system to optimize routing services
within the customer's premises. The management system determines the most efficient route based
on the following factors such as distance, time, and location. There are also services representatives
whose main aim is to obtain a service route from the management system to complete their
assigned services and management systems. Finally, they keep on updating the management
system. The updating process ensures the information is in sync with the planned benefits. The
principal user of the system is the branch personnel and service representative. The branch ops
provide expertise and business rules. The branch operational support team is the liaison between
the route management and branch personnel, whose work is to maintain the system. If the issue
arises within the TMS software application is reported to the defect tracking system, these defects
are enhancement request, software application related, and data related.
Define phase
It entails putting down on paper what you know concerning the problem that clarifies facts,
forms the team objective, and brings the definition to the problem. The project charter is created
upon agreement during the definition process step. It defines the customer's views and customers'
needs. It ensures the end goal of the organization is met. The problem statement is that the leading
quality bearing manufacturing is currently facing downtime due to production loss. The OD
grinding department is among the low-efficiency department as the total hours for seven months
are 5000hrs due to low efficient at OD grinding that creates downtime of 430 hours out of 4939hrs
in which operations are carried out. The efficiency loss depends on the performance process; this
reduces downtime of other channels as per the new typesetting, cycle time deviation, and
addressing operation improvising the performance of DDS cells.
SIGMA & DMAIC IN A MANUFACTURING PLANTS 5
The defined phase goal is to ensure understanding of the problem, including its purpose. It
is used to serve the sense that it is meant for without ignorance. It maps the current process as its
assurance is not easily forgotten. It ensures detailed customers' expectations by providing them
with commodities that satisfy their needs. The final goal is to determine whether the process is
good for DMAIC as it ensures that it's responsible and avails itself when required. In conclusion,
the purpose of the define phase must be considered for the problem identification and problem
eradication through the approved ways. The DMAIC define phase overview is based on project
inputs in two to three weeks and begins with the proper selection of the champion. There are
multiple tools available to determine the phase of six sigma.
Measure phase
The measurements phase entails collecting and gauging data within the organization.
Multiple tools are used to measure and calculate data to find appropriate steps. It has the main
purpose of compiling information about a given project. The reliable data is collected and
compared with future results. Teams create interrelated business performance enhancement. The
table of machine numbers is drawn against the most efficiency in percentage. As per the table, it
is concluded that the DDS cell is one of the main bottlenecks for the downtime problem from the
OD department in the organization. It mainly deals with identifying the process from its operation
& ensures the organization succeeds in its customer satisfaction plans. Generally, measures enable
one to remember the problem and emphasize getting possible solutions.
Analyze phase
The main goal is to identify the potential root cause, which is then fixed. The data collected
is looked upon for details to identify inputs and process variables that eventually control the final
output. Once the relationship is known, knowledge is applied to reduce variations in the production
SIGMA & DMAIC IN A MANUFACTURING PLANTS 6
to improve the phase. One of the tools of DMAIC is Pareto charts that are the bar charts that
horizontal axis splits categories such as defects. The cumulative frequency line graph shows the
frequency in descending order of magnitude. It is important as it displays by separating a few
problems of high importance from low importance. Another tool of DMAIC is the five whys that
ask why five times to establish the root cause; another tool of DMAIC is scattered graphs. These
are points scattered all over the chart; the information shows no relationship exists from the
parameters of data sloping from bottom left, data descending from top left, and data that displays
visible trends. In summary, statistical numbers are used to identify variables that control the
process (García González et al., 2021).
Project management tools keep track of project acceleration, ice breakers, and project
pitfalls. The graphical analysis deals with information for hypothesis testing, which is interaction
plots. Statistical analysis is a data collection plans it test the sample size and classifications. Process
map analysis identifies wastes through detained process maps. For example, one may analyze shift
to shift variation and machine operation, and many others as he approaches the analysis scheme.
In conclusion, the analysis phase has no importance analysis one tends to conclude without finding
the root cause of the issue; many methods that work for your team are considered the best.
Analyze phase of DMAIC's goal is to find the critical root cause that has the highest impact
on the organization's growth (García González et al., 2021). When the team evaluates and gets, it
becomes easier for them to get the remedy through measurable data to identify the probable causes
of the problem, eliminating problems as early as possible before they become big. The
identification of the actual root cause is by using brainstorming, five whys, and other techniques
that help and enable the team to solve the real problem affecting the firm. In general, issues need
SIGMA & DMAIC IN A MANUFACTURING PLANTS 7
to be identified, a plan on how to solve their need to be established, and remedies of that particular
problem need to be put in place very early.
Improve phase
It is the fourth DMAIC phase; its main aim is to identify the solution mentioned in the
above phases. It focuses on the route cause elimination and implementation of improvement to
monitor continuous improvement. The problem here is dealt with using appropriate professional
measures; this has a worthwhile goal for the organization to eliminate risks that could arise shortly.
An informed decision is formed utilizing the analysis phase of DMAIC; this leads to success and
validated conclusion that six sigma teams are focused on data analysis.
Six sigma is a systematic problem solving that mainly focuses on defects and variation
reduction, which improves the process.DMAIC is a framework that helps one think and plan
improvements to achieve the six sigma level of excellence. This greatly focuses on gathering the
root cause and validation of data. Structured improvement leads to possible appropriate solutions.
Brainstorm a solution that will fix the problem at this stage; the team is required to provide possible
ideas that come from quantity to quality. This consists of creative ideas that intend to give solutions
as it is the main technique of finding the improvement phase. Selection of practical solutions,
which are the list of improved explanations in the process, is used to choose options of conflicts,
e.g., the weighted criteria matrix, which greatly assists in making informed decisions. They
develop maps of operations based on different solutions it reduces wastes and waits times; these
maps are useful towards guiding the team on best decisions. Please select the best decision solution
to ensure this is achieved; mini testing known as plan do check act refines the ideas while collecting
the valuable feedback as it is a great way to find proper improvements.
SIGMA & DMAIC IN A MANUFACTURING PLANTS 8
There is the implementation of solutions; this is achieved through careful planning and an
appropriate strategy for getting the remedy as the team is about to finalize their task. The team has
to consider communication plans, training, and documentation; the more they spend on planning,
the faster they reach the adaptation and improvement process of the participants. This ensures the
firm succeeds as the main goal of the improving phase is about to bear measurements. Once the
team has presented the solution that has resulted in measures of improvement, then the team is
able and allowed to move on to the control phase.
Control phase
This is the fifth and final phase of the DMAIC process. It controls the improvised process;
in other words, it ensures the new process is implemented and doesn't go back to old ways. This
prevents the firm from growing up to a newly changed one. Its main aim is to implement whatever
changes to improve the DMAIC phase of improvement for the new process (García González et
al., 2021). The new process has been implemented and maintained for the positioning. All
responsibilities are transitioned to the new owner in the firm. In the end, the owners ensure the
new stipulated process is enforced as it's the final process near to the impacts. The control phase's
main objective is to measure the new processes, promote improvements, and then implement a
control plan to ensure the new process is being implemented. Transition is the key thing in the
improved function of the operational team.
The following are control phases of DMAIC goals. It develops a control plan which is
being followed by the team to achieve them by getting the possible solutions. Celebrates success
and recognition of the team; this will motivate person working in the organization hence increased
production. Cost-benefit analysis is for the main aim of maximizing outputs while minimizing
inputs to increase the profit margin. The implementation plan enables the firm to achieve the target
SIGMA & DMAIC IN A MANUFACTURING PLANTS 9
of production. Statistical process control uses statistics to control the risk that may occur in the
team. Develop a control that will be followed when making informed decisions and validating the
solution to prevent the same problem from happening again and focus on the progress of the
decision made (Senthilkumar & Raffie, 2016).
The control phase DMAIC overview is about a two to three weeks process. Its main
objective is to create and update standards of work and instructions. Controlled charts are used to
monitor the mechanism and the process. Various tools are available in the control phase of six
sigma as they gain management approval. Statistical process control is the quality control that
employs measure, monitor, etc. Ratio subgrouping organizes data into groups produced under the
same conditions assists in estimating short-term variations for operating control charts, thus
helping to control limits and long-term variations. The control chart is the primary technique of
statistical process control, and it graphically displays quality characteristics that have been
computed from the sample versus the sample number. The variable control charts measure the
output on the scale as the product's quality characteristics; for example, Run charts display evolved
data over a period. X-bar-S Charts are used when subgroups have great large samples.
Conclusion
Factories have to deal accordingly with problems related to productivity and quality
control. Sub-standard productivity affects customers' demand for the product as the quality is
reduced hence bringing imbalances in demand and supply; due to this problem, the organization
will suffer a huge loss. Due to the above precaution, the organization has to put in place measures
of producing quality goods and standards ones six sigma will be applied effectively, and the
existing process to be improved for the success of the business through proper decision making.
SIGMA & DMAIC IN A MANUFACTURING PLANTS 10
Six sigma provides a statistical move towards each action. It can work comfortably with
less reading in the databases, making itself industrial oriented on quality and productivity
improvement. The firm is forced to sustain downtime through getting the relationship between
rest, and the effect of issues is a great challenge to the complex system. Six sigma and lean share
a common goal: striving to achieve customer satisfaction. They complement each other and can
be integrated to become superior such as LSS, which overcomes the shortcomings. The new
thoughts are incorporated uniquely to achieve the goal.
Six sigma and lean share the origins of developing leadership & staff roles. On the other
hand, the two methodologies' differences in how they are viewed and criticized, to people's
operations teams, etc. There are still numerous similarities, and that is satisfying the customer's
needs through producing commodity to ensure constant supply as it creates value to them hence
maximizing profit. It is proven that despite differences, they share common grounds that excel,
forming an opportunity to complete the other; thus, the integration between the two is beneficial.
The list of recommendations was later used as the guidelines tool for developing a model
that should function. It can also be taken into account in relation to the other systems in the firm
that will work to satisfy the same needs when the existing one develops a problem that might need
long and a lot of costs to repair and serve as its purpose it reduces on the loss that might occur
during the process of developing the function. For example, LSS and TQM fit each other to form
a better methodology that improves the performance of the business as it maximizes profit by
minimization of inputs that are used as the firm resource.
The description of the LSS model following the DMAIC was put forward in the trial of
explanation in a straightforward and balanced way, and all Projects should follow the DMAIC and
appropriate LSS tools such as VSM as per the problem to get immediate feedback acted upon, as
SIGMA & DMAIC IN A MANUFACTURING PLANTS 11
it takes the shortest time to implement and come up with a conclusive measure that must be
followed for the progress. The interaction brings the newly developed results that are advantageous
to the organization's growth as per the lean and six sigma. The next level for research is to conduct
practical studies based on actions and results viewed on eyes, as one gives judges what they view
and comes up with appropriate measures on the next step.
