BUSI 680: Advanced Project Management I
DISCUSSION BOARD 1 2
Blair, thank you for your discussion post on the greatest projects in the last 50 years. I enjoyed
reading about the MRI, ISS, and Burj Khalifa as each of these projects was very interesting to
read. Specifically, the construction of the Burj Khalifa is remarkable. This monumental project
did not just magically happen overnight. As you mentioned, the project took over five years to
build, which really is not very long considering the amount of work done on the building.
According to Abraham (2019), the architecture firm behind the design and engineering of Burj
Khalifa, the construction of the tower required more than 22 million-man hours from about
12,000 professionals and skilled workers, and more than 60 consultants and contracting
companies from around the world” (p. 690). This large number of people demonstrates the
amount of effective project management that was required in every stage from project managers
and other professionals to make this tower construction a success. However, the project was not
perfect, as the design changed halfway through and the cost of raw materials went higher, so the
costs proceeded its planned budget by $624 million (Abraham, 2019). As in all projects, the
project managers had to adapt to problems as they arose and changed course as required as they
did with the design. This adaptability is essential to have as a project manager. John 16:33
reminds us that I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you
will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (ESV, 2001). We need to keep
this passage in mind when we encounter problems during project management and put our trust
in the Lord.

Michael, great discussion post on some of the greatest achievements of the past 50 years. You
identified some of the most important breakthroughs as they address more than just nice-to-
haves, but necessities at this point. For instance, without GPS, the world would not have the
everyday capabilities such as navigation and other important military capabilities that it does
today. The other two achievements you discussed, address important environmental concerns that
are meant to prevent harm to future generations. There are many drivers in implementing
projects affecting people, the planet, and profit (Gray & Larson, 2021). As the threat of global
warming is getting real, projects businesses can no longer solely focus on maximizing their
profits, but they must also be socially and environmentally responsible (Gray & Larson, 2021).
The invention of the solar panel and electric vehicle address these environmental concerns as
they seek to reduce emissions and use renewable energy. It is important to take care of future
generations by executing projects now. We are reminded of this concept by Numbers 35:33-34
which points out You shall not pollute the land in which you live, for blood pollutes the land,
and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, except by the blood of

the one who shed it. You shall not defile the land in which you live, in the midst of which I
dwell, for I the Lord dwell in the midst of the people of Israel (ESV, 2001).
