BUSINESS PROCESS DESIGN (REENGINEERING) 3
Business Process Design (Reengineering)
Key concept explanation
This discussion selected the business process design or reengineering. This concept offers
a framework for defining the various strategies businesses can use in redesigning their core
processes to meet their desired goals. Numerous authors like Bhaskar (2018) claim that business
process design and reengineering involves multiple interventions that companies use to improve
the product and services delivery strategies. However, the author argues that at least 70% of the
implemented solutions in business process design have failed because of poor planning and
sound methodologies. I have selected this topic out of academic curiosity and support my
professional career in understanding business operations. I intend to gather more knowledge
about the current challenges many workplaces face in reengineering their business processes.
Comparison
After looking at the assigned course text, the main ideas discussed on the topic reflect the
various interventions used to ensure smooth business process completion and execution
(Meredith & Shafer, 2019). The course text offers ideas that show the need for business process
design. Business process design comprises diverse strategies for improving the core operations
executed within a given environment to achieve the desired goal, usually in quality management
and guarantee. The article by Bhaskar (2018) claims that business process design is a complex
and progressive procedure executed within the organizational setting to achieve a common goal.
The two sources agree that business process design is an essential task in accomplishing the set
organizational goals. Through business process design, areas such as manufacturing can improve
their operations, according to Maryam & Khan (2017). From the two external sources, there are
various similarities in understanding business process design. The main similarity is that all
BUSINESS PROCESS DESIGN (REENGINEERING) 4
sources agree that business process design is a strategic approach for improving product or
services delivery quality.
Additionally, the literature agrees with the course text about business process design
importance in ensuring maximum quality management in core products and procedures. The
article by Maryam & Khan (2017) extends the knowledge on business process design through
applying it in the smart manufacturing sector. This study improves my understanding of the role
of business process reengineering in promoting the corporate procedural quality in products and
services delivery.
Article summary
This section has selected the article by Bhaskar (2018). This study offers insight into the
most common and essential aspects that businesses follow in ensuring maximum products and
services delivery. This article offers insight into the everyday challenges organizations face when
implementing strategies for overcoming the existing weaknesses in products and services
delivery. Implementing a successful business process design or reengineering intervention is
challenging. The complexities arise in resources allocation and management.
Additionally, organizations face diverse challenges in the lack of a reliable framework
and methodology for implementing the proposed changes affects the abilities to maintain the
desired goals. Also, organizations fail to consider the effects associated with the people factor
during the implementation processes. Such a weakness affects their ability to positively reflect
the organizational needs while undermining employee engagement throughout the
implementation processes. According to the author, implementing the desired designs or
reengineering the existing processes requires sufficient planning and employee engagement.
BUSINESS PROCESS DESIGN (REENGINEERING) 5
Numerous frameworks can be used in coordinating these processes. On the same note, this study
offers insight into adopting such solutions in the manufacturing sector, focusing on reducing
wastes and improving operational success. Through strategic planning and resources alignment,
firms in the manufacturing sector can successfully implement the proposed changes through
business process reengineering.
Biblical integration
The Bible offers a vital reference point that guides operations within diverse areas such as
business and the community. One of the main goals that drive businesses is to make profits.
Some businesses consider profits generation as a success metric. Strategies like business process
design and reengineering focus on progressively improving corporate operations to meet the
desired goals like profit generation. Proverbs 14:15 speaks about strategy and its importance in
improving oneself and the community. According to Proverbs 14: 15, "The simple believes
everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps" the verse says that businesses should focus
on strategy development to ensure success. This verse encourages using critical thinking in
strategy development which applies to the business process reengineering aspects.
Application
This topic applies to the natural world environments in various ways. The first way the
topic applies is to allow businesses to boost their insight into consumer needs by redesigning
their existing processes. Business process design has influenced firms from multiple dimensions
like manufacturing in optimizing their operations to meet their consumers' growing demands.
Additionally, this topic informs decisions management teams make concerning addressing
consumer needs and demands. Through this topic, many firms like Apple, Inc., Amazon and
Walmart have benefited from redefining their approaches in supply chain management by

integrating technologies. Such efforts have influenced their success, supporting the hypothesis
that business process reengineering is an essential trend to promote operational efficiency.
Annotated bibliography
Bhaskar, H. L. (2018). Business process reengineering framework and methodology: a
critical study. International Journal of Services and Operations Management, 29(4), 527-556.
According to this article, one of the main issues that influence organizational success is
leveraging strategy to boost daily operations. Diverse strategies can be used to inform business
success. Business process design is essential since it allows firms to boost their operations while
eliminating risks in competition. However, the author argues that many organizations have failed
to implement the ideal business process designs regardless of the perceived benefits. This failure
has been linked with poor strategy alignment and the inability to define the ideal methodology
and framework for implementation. Such challenges affect business alignment when
approaching strategy implementation and success.

manufacturing. In 2017 IEEE 8th Annual Ubiquitous Computing, Electronics and Mobile
Communication Conference (UEMCON) (pp. 424-430). IEEE.
This study, on the other hand, has explored the topic from a practical dimension.
According to the authors, the main focus has been on exploring business process reengineering
in the manufacturing sector. The study claims that the manufacturing sector needs redefined
processes and strategies to eliminate wastes while improving consumer relationships. Through
business process reengineering, it is possible to define the ideal framework for achieving the
desired goals in performance management and success. This study offers insight into the
BUSINESS PROCESS DESIGN (REENGINEERING) 7
practical application of business process reengineering targeting reducing working hours to
increase consumer satisfaction for a smart manufacturing firm. Such efforts allow firms to create
a unique consumer relationship.
Qu, Y., Ming, X., Ni, Y., Li, X., Liu, Z., Zhang, X., & Xie, L. (2019). An integrated
framework of enterprise information systems in smart manufacturing system via business
process reengineering. Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B:
Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 233(11), 2210-2224.
From another perspective, this examination has explored the role of using an integrated
framework for fostering adopting information systems in the manufacturing sector. This goal has
been mainly influenced by business process reengineering. It is worth noting that business
process reengineering allows firms to redefine their operations and procedures. Such a project
allows the management to determine the most appropriate interventions to overcome a common
challenge. The authors argue that implementing new technologies from an enterprise dimension
requires initial planning and coordination. This task can be achieved through strategic alignment
from a business process design. Hence using this framework, it is possible to implement new
solutions in the workplace to foster performance.
Nkurunziza, G., Munene, J., Ntayi, J., & Kaberuka, W. (2019). Business process
reengineering in developing economies: Lessons from microfinance institutions (MFIs) in
Uganda. Innovation & Management Review.
The authors have explored the application of business process design in the developing
nations from the article above. Primarily focusing on the microfinance institutions, this report
shows that the organizational alignment has informed their success in adopting the latest
BUSINESS PROCESS DESIGN (REENGINEERING) 8
technological solutions with the current trends. However, failing to understand the current
business needs and the current challenges may undermine the abilities to maintain a positive
relationship with the latest developments. Business process design allows such firms to
understand the current challenges while defining the most appropriate changes to implement to
overcome such weaknesses. Such a strategy progressively informs the management on the best
approaches to adopt in correcting the existing challenges.
Dachyar, M., & Sanjiwo, Z. (2018). Business Process Reengineering of Engineering
Procurement Construction (EPC) Project in Oil and Gas Industry in Indonesia. Indian
Journal of Science and Technology, 8(1).
The study above offers insight into the common strategies business entities follow and
implement to overcome their quality improvement challenges. While six sigma and lean
approaches have been adopted in diverse organizations, it is worth noting that their effectiveness
is informed by the managerial capacity to understand the existing business process challenges.
Business process reengineering concepts have been implemented in reducing delays in the
engineering procurement construction projects. Such projects require precise timing to eliminate
loss risks. This study explored the application of business process design in the project
management framework, allowing the stakeholders to map both the As Is and To Be states. This
method improved the Engineering Procurement Construction projects by about 35%. Therefore,
this study concludes the business process design should be implemented in heavy projects to
evaluate delays while providing the ideal solutions.
