Integrative Learning Project: The IBM Company
Introduction
There are different ways to capitalize on operations management concepts to increase
productivity and grow their size. For example, IBM is one of the oldest companies in the world of
computing. The company offers its services mainly to large businesses and corporations, including
governments (Jacobi and Webb, 2020). Today, IBM is one of the best companies to develop home
personal computers that companies can use to create laser scanners. These are used in cash
registers, especially in grocery shops with automated teller machines (ATMs) (Agrawal, Atasu,
and Van Wassenhove, 2019). Currently, the company focuses on creating both software and
hardware solutions for both large and small organizations. Therefore, the company has grown and
developed worldwide it amassing a vast customer base for its provision of solutions to business
organizations. Today, many business organizations depend on IBM to provide solutions to operate
efficiently and smoothly, which leads to their success in the competitive market. IBM has achieved
all these with an application of strategies that ensures its operations lead to tremendous success in
the company (Jacobi and Webb, 2020). The paper addressed IBM's operations and their relevance
to the operation management strategies of the company. Several concepts used to sustain the
company's operations are managed, alongside the IBM Company's benefits.
Organizational Setting
The organizational setting of IBM is characterized by its well-functioning ecosystem and
efficient management of the organization. IBM has a mission of being the leader in creating,
developing, and manufacturing the most advanced information technologies in the industry that
involves computer systems, network systems, devices for storage, microelectronics, software, and
IBM COMPANY 3
hardware. Operations at the IBM Company are guided by a range of core values that include the
utmost respect for every individual, a great effort to customer service, and extreme efforts towards
achieving excellence in all the company processes. These values have guided the company to
achieve tremendous success from its foundation up to today, especially in the very competitive
market.
There are many ways to optimize operations management concepts to elevate productivity
and growth. IBM is one of the oldest organizations in the computing industry and offers its services
to large corporations, including governments. The organization features several concepts that
facilitate its operations and its benefits. It has a well-functioning ecosystem and efficient
management detailing its overall organizational setting. Besides, it creates a sustainable approach
that allows for efficient management of the assets required to carry out its operations (Bieswanger
et al., 2020). In the process, it can enhance every asset's productivity and performance, revealing
more sustainable operations. Essentially, the main objective for the organization is to incorporate
innovation and enhancement of the computing world by developing and creating advanced
technologies for its consumers. Operations management is an essential component (Agrawal et al.,
2019). IBM's excellent operations are ensured by incorporating excellent management strategies
initiated by the organization's management.
Products and customers
The IBM Company is well known worldwide for the high-quality products and services in
the market. Firstly, the IBM Company provides business solutions and global services,
technological services, and products that serve a wide range of customers. Secondly, the IBM
Company has created cloud platforms and systems that many business organizations worldwide
use in various operations. Additionally, the IBM Company provides global financing services by
IBM COMPANY 4
producing automated teller machines used by Sacco’s, banks, and other financial institutions in
their financial processes. Also, the IBM Company manufactures and distributes computing
products across the world. Other products and services that the IBM Company produces include
information and analysis systems, registering products, information, and technology systems, and
internet systems. The IBM Company has also manufactured cloud data encryption services that
offer data security to business organizations that provide maximum protection to customers' data.
Therefore, the IBM Company produces a range of products and services that have attracted a vast
customer base worldwide, including infrastructure and technical support devices. The company
also has products accompanied with integration equipment that ensures high-quality services and
products to customers (Agrawal, Atasu, and Van Wassenhove, 2019). Customers have also
benefitted from global finance, making it easier for business organizations to conduct transactions
with their customers. All these products and services are integrated into the organization's structure
setting. Additionally, the IBM Company has its products and services integrated into specific
departments that are easily managed.
The IBM Company targets small, middle-sized, and extensive business organizations to
offer high-quality solutions to their various problems. In part of the IBM Company sales, it meets
the needs of every customer in the market by aligning its systems and technologies with the market
needs (Yoo, Jang, Ho, Seo, and Yoo, 2018). Additionally, the company sells its products to large
organization customers in the information and technology industry. The IBM Company manages
its productions to meet the target market's needs using a range of marketing strategies. The
marketing strategies of the IBM Company involve an extensive investment in products and
services advertisements with a combination of promotions to customers on their increasingly
evolving products (Bieswanger et al., 2020).
IBM COMPANY 5
The products and services produced by the IBM Company are different from those of its
competitors in the market. Some of the main competitors of the IBM Company include Hewlett-
Packard (H.P.) that deals with the production of Information and Technology products and
services. Xerox is another competitor in the macro electronics department that Produces and sells
print and digital products. The Accenture Company deals with manufacturing Computer Services
and Solutions that it sells to various business organizations. The Oracle Company deals with
providing Advanced Technology Solutions to customers across the world (Yoo, Jang, Ho, Seo,
and Yoo, 2018). The other competitor is DXC Technologies that is involved in the production and
provision of Modernizing information and technology processes, providing maximum system
security and cloud optimization. Other competitors of the IBM Company include ODM Direct,
Inspur, and Dell Technologies that operates in the information and technology industry. All these
companies use a range of strategies to meet the stiff competition in the market. The IBM Company
has competed in the market, experiencing a continuous increase in market share over the years.
The company utilizes a range of competitive and marketing strategies to produce products and
services differentiated from those made by other companies in the market. The IBM differentiation
of products strategy has effectively beat the stiff competition in the market of IBM (Satyro,
Spinola, de Almeida, Giannetti, Sacomano, Contador, and Contador, 2021). The IBM Company
products are differentiated from the other products in the market in many ways, such as quality,
sizes, shapes, and pricing.
The IBM Company's marketing strategies are responsible for the tremendous success that
the company has achieved by beating the stiff competition in information and computing
technology. The company operates in day-to-day direct business operations, with most of its
customers being multinational organizations, government, airline industry, and other essential
IBM COMPANY 6
service industries. Many organizations and companies worldwide depend on information and
technology, especially with the modern application in the market. The IBM Company products
and services seek to provide solutions to business organizations that experience technology-related
issues. Through its market strategies, the IBM Company has created an excellent reputation among
its customers to enable it to compete in the market. Today, the IBM Company does not necessarily
depend on advertisements as it does direct businesses with clients. Additionally, the IBM company
has been effective in its operations, especially most of its products primarily in the financial sector,
such as the automated teller machines, cash registers, and credit readers being highly used across
the world (Busby, Cohen, Dames, Doherty, Dragone, Evans, Fisher, Hadzic, Hagleitner, Higby,
Hocker, Jagich, Jordan, Kisley, Lamb, Marik, Mayfield, Morris, Needham, and Werner, 2020).
The main aim of the IBM Company is to present solutions to business organizations that involve
the creation and provision of software, consultancy services, and building infrastructure to help
organizations solve their various issues.
The IBM Company employs a range of orientations that helps it meet the market
requirements while also meeting the diverse customer needs worldwide. The three components
include customer orientation, competitor orientation, and inter-functional coordination. The IBM
Company's customer orientation involves utilizing all its available resources in combining relevant
data and information regarding customer needs and behaviors of the consumers in the target market
(Solaimani, Haghighi Talab, and van der Rhee, 2019). On the other hand, the IBM Company
competitor orientation involves utilizing marketing strategies that focus on competitors in the
information and technology industry. A large part of the company's clientele buys mainly services
and software solutions from IBM. IBM uses the Lenovo companies to provide customers with
Personal Computers for individual consumers.
IBM COMPANY 7
Values Added to the Organization
Every employee in the company ensures that the company achieves its set objectives in
delivering innovation in computing. The IBM Company requires every employee to practice the
highest standards of business responsibilities and roles as they interact with the organization's
clients and connect with the local communities (Solaimani, Haghighi Talab, and van der Rhee,
2019). As an employee of the IBM Company, I have my values aligned to those of the
organizations, and I apply them in all company activities. I add dedication to the IBM Company
with utmost commitment to every organization's client. Faith is one of the highest value aspects
required for every employee towards the IBM organization activities and its relation with the
customers (Busby, Cohen, Dames, Doherty, Dragone, Evans, Fisher, Hadzic, Hagleitner, Higby,
Hocker, Jagich, Jordan, Kisley, Lamb, Marik, Mayfield, Morris, Needham, and Werner, 2020).
Additionally, being a very innovative employee, I had excellent innovation skills and
experience in the IBM Company operations in producing and manufacturing various products and
services. Every company, including IBM, requires high-level innovation to incorporate modern
technology into the organization's activities and processes. High levels of innovations help
organizations produce high-quality products and services that meet customers' needs worldwide.
Additionally, I add exceptional trust and personal relations with the other employees (Solaimani,
Haghighi Talab, and van der Rhee, 2019). Companies experience high successes when the
employees cooperate and work well as a team towards meeting the company goals and objectives.
Just like the other organizations, the IBM Company requires that employees should maintain good
relations and always work as a team to meet the various goals set by the organization (Busby,
Cohen, Dames, Doherty, Dragone, Evans, Fisher, Hadzic, Hagleitner, Higby, Hocker, Jagich,
Jordan, Kisley, Lamb, Marik, Mayfield, Morris, Needham, and Werner, 2020).
IBM COMPANY 8
Also, I work closely with the other employees and the company customers to ensure
continued problem solving within the information and technology industry.
The Role of Christianity in IBM
To avoid issues related to religious controversy and the complicated politics surrounding
religion, the company does not explicitly state that many of its values are modeled after
Christianity. However, Christianity has played a lot of roles in the operations of the IBM Company
over the years. For example, Christianity requires individuals to restrict their lives, especially when
they experience day-to-day operations challenges. Over the years, the IBM Company has
dominated the information and technology industry, especially microelectronics and advanced
computers (Prestes, Joly, Teixeira, Patrício, and Sangiorgi, 2019). However, in recent years, the
company has experienced a lot of competition from other companies, leading to low-income levels
and reduced market share. Many big high-risk ventures have entered the industry and have
outcompeted companies like IBM (Satyro, Spinola, de Almeida, Giannetti, Sacomano, Contador,
and Contador, 2021). Therefore, the IBM Company has had to follow the biblical teaching of
restructuring to compete in the competitive market and regain its market share in the industry.
During the late 1990s, the stock value of the IBM Company reduced to deficient levels due to the
high competition in the market (Kawaguchi, 2019). With the retaliation that the IBM Company
couldn't remain competitive in the market, it had to restructure its operations. The restructuring of
the IBM Company involved an installation of a new leaner workforce and changed its overall
spending priorities.
Additionally, the IBM Company restructuring involved the power distribution across the
departments from the company CEO, board of directors, managers to the lowest levels of staff
(Yoo, Jang, Ho, Seo, and Yoo, 2018). These operations meant the beginning of new ways for the
IBM COMPANY 9
company to operate, do business, manufacture, produce, and distribute products and its overall
relationship with the customers. Like in the Christianity teachings, restructuring in companies like
IBM involves considering new strategies and investing in other marketing operations to meet the
organization's needs. Through a restructuring, most organizations, especially those involved in
competitive corporate markets, finally get to achieve their goals and objectives. Restructuring
enabled the IBM Company to rearrange its operations in ways that helped it remain competitive in
the market (Busby, Cohen, Dames, Doherty, Dragone, Evans, Fisher, Hadzic, Hagleitner, Higby,
Hocker, Jagich, Jordan, Kisley, Lamb, Marik, Mayfield, Morris, Needham, and Werner, 2020).
Therefore, the restructuring of the IBM Company indicates a helpful way of understanding biblical
teachings of the need to restructure.
The other role Christianity has played in the operations of the IBM Company is repentance
which leads to new ways of living and carrying out various functions. In the Bible, Jesus taught
about the need to repent, which would lead to people living differently under the guidance of the
Holy Spirit. Therefore, for organizations to change their old ways of operating and doing business,
including new marketing strategies, they have reconsidered their ways of doing operations and
saw the need to change (Kawaguchi, 2019). Therefore, Christianity had played a significant role
in the functions of the IBM Company, especially during periods when it was making losses and
saw the need to restructure. Other Christian values built in the operations of the IBM Company
include trust, honesty, and respect.
Integration of Chapter Concepts
Some of the examples of critical concepts include supply chain management, Six Sigma,
an innovation that has been applied in the IBM Company operations.
IBM COMPANY 10
Supply chain management
The IBM Company developed the supply chain management to help support the evolution
of the supply chain in the company distribution of inputs and products to the various company
stores across the world. The IBM Company transformed its supply chain to meet the company
supply requirements. The supply chain management has helped the IBM Company reinforce
enterprise collaboration that led to improved efficiency in distributing resources and products to
the organization stores and shops worldwide. These operations helped the IBM Company meet all
the measurement requirements and, hence, maximum utilization of company resources in the
production process to meet customers' product demands and needs (Jimoh, Oyewobi, Isa, and
Waziri, 2018). In the past, IBM measured the execution in the supply chain business functions
based on the overall company logistics and procurement. Therefore, the supply chain management
of the IBM Company sought to ensure that the various logistics and procurements were met even
without conducting measurements. However, today, the IBM Company supply chain management
achieves its integrated goals by completing all the required logistics and measures. Today, the
supply chain management requirements are to meet or exceed the customer's necessary
expectations when doing various business orders.
Additionally, the IBM supply chain management captures the critical data across the
various organization operations (Gupta, Modgil, and Gunasekaran, 2019). Therefore, after
implementing an effective supply chain management to the operations of IBM, the company has
adopted a measurement system that supports a range of dynamics for every operation each day.
The supply chain has had a lot of positive impacts on the IBM Company operations, with it cutting
costs and increasing the overall incomes from business operations. Firstly, the supply chain
management and measurement brought a lot of benefits to the IBM Company, with its inventory
IBM COMPANY 11
the most significant low levels since the company foundation. Additionally, the company's supply
chain management led to an overall reduction in the company's supply chain expenses by
approximately $300 million in the past year. Also, with the minimization of supply chain
management costs, the IBM Company has saved a lot that has been re-invested in the company
operations and hence maintained its competition status in the market (Gupta, Modgil, and
Gunasekaran, 2019). Supply chain management of the IBM Company led to reduced workload for
the company employees as they saved approximately 25 percent of their time that would have been
used in combining logistics which is now used in conducting other operations.
The lean six Sigma
The IBM Company has also implemented the lean six Sigma (LSS) towards creating a
worldwide framework to deliver high-quality products and services that would lead to the
company's massive success. Based on IBM's Component Business Model approach, the use of
Sigma six breaks down the organization of the company's operations into logical segments that
can be independently analyzed (Hennessy and Patterson, 2019). Firstly, IBM introduced the lean
six Sigma implementation to provide consultancy services that would help multinational and
governmental organizations analyze their energy uses and waste disposal. Therefore, IBM mainly
implemented the lean six Sigma to help organizations cut energy costs and reduce the overall
wastes released to the environment (Jimoh, Oyewobi, Isa, and Waziri, 2018). The IBM Company
could manage its energy costs and wastes and evaluate the overall environmental effects through
this model. This model made it easier for organizations to improve the performance of their
operations, which led to the organization's success and the comprehensive protection of the
environment (Hennessy and Patterson, 2019). For example, the IBM Company established a Public
Sector Energy and Environment Diagnostic to help governments understand their impacts on the
IBM COMPANY 12
environment and how its operations affected the overall performance. Through this model, it was
easier for the government to improve its overall efficiency in energy usage. Also, these operations;
ed to the government reducing its overall environmental impact, such as the greenhouse gas
emissions. By meeting its environmental standards, the government could install regulations that
ensured organizations met specific ecological criteria required by the government. Hence, overall
protection of the environment and reduction in climate change rate (Cuomo, Caleffi, and
Cacciapuoti, 2020).
Additionally, the IBM Company had developed the Public Sector Energy and Environment
Diagnostic to help the United States of America government to meet the requirements for
improved efficiency in the economy, environment, energy, and transport sectors. Today, there are
a lot of calls requesting both local and national governments across the world asking them to ensure
that there is an improvement in the efficiency levels. Leaders and other government officials have
responded by providing high environmental standards in various institutions and an eventual
reduction in the ecological impact (Ben-Daya, Hassini, and Bahroun, 2017). Therefore, the IBM
Company implemented a business strategy that dealt with environmental standards consultancy
worldwide. A global consulting leader led the business strategy in charge of the IBM corporate
social responsibility. It would work by employing modern and intelligent tools to assess the overall
performances and ensure high environmental standards.
The IBM Public Sector Energy and Environment Diagnostic has offered through the lean
six sigma model brought great success to the finance, operations, and procurement sectors.
Additionally, the model analyzes how the organization and the government are performing
regarding efficiency, sustainability, cost, and environmental impacts (Cuomo, Caleffi, and
Cacciapuoti, 2020). Also, the IBM Company has assisted the government institutions in
IBM COMPANY 13
developing the best strategies towards achieving good performance and achieving a high
environmental level. Additionally, the IBM Company acquired the Public Sector Energy and
Environment Diagnostic has helped the ecological management system identify the appropriate
leaders that would enable it to establish various targets and improve their overall performance. The
IBM Company had developed the Public Sector Energy and Environment Diagnostic has also led
to a reduction in water consumption and the establishment of better facilities that improve
efficiency and overall performance (Binswanger, Maier, Mayer, Shah, and others Candee, 2020).
Finally, the IBM Company developed the Public Sector Energy and Environment Diagnostic and
emphasized waste prevention and improvement in its overall environmental disposal. All these
efforts have been achieved by implementing the lean six sigma model to the operations of the IBM
Company.
Job Design and Human Resources
The organizational culture of IBM allows for the effective management of human
resources. The company's culture and criticality mainly determine the scope of operations and
tasks to employees (Cascio, 2021). The IBM Company utilizes human resources management in
its business processes and marketing strategies to meet the considerable demands in the market
and beat the stiff competition in the industry. Human resource management supports these
processes by ensuring the company employs individuals with the best skills and experience that
would require the organization towards success (Agrawal, Atasu, and Van Wassenhove, 2019).
Hiring a competitive employee would make it easier for the organization to connect and relate with
the customers while improving the customer's experience with the organization.
Additionally, human resource management helps the organization relate well with the
employees by ensuring a suitable environment for their performance while also ensuring their
IBM COMPANY 14
needs are met. The IBM Company's human resource management has led to achieving better
operational results and, hence, the organization's overall success (Bieswanger, Maier, Mayer,
Shah, and Candee, 2020). The human resource management ensures that the IBM Company
employee’s skills, talents, and expertise align with the business strategies to produce and distribute
products according to customers' requirements.
There exist various factors that include globalization, competition, and operationalization
that affect the business strategies of the IBM Company. Therefore, human resource management
has helped the IBM Company effectively compete and improve its overall performance. Also,
human resource management has led to a reduction in production costs and improved innovations
in the company operations throughout the IBM operations (Cascio, 2021). Additionally, human
resource management has led to an overall increase in the company's competitive advantage in the
market.
Process and Capacity Design
By having a steady and predictable design process, the company ensures that results from
many of its operations are reflected in its productivity's gradual and continuous growth. The
process and capacity design prove their advanced operations management strategies (Bieswanger,
Maier, Mayer, Shah, and Candee, 2020). The IBM process and capacity design involve a range of
processes that the company must follow to ensure the production and manufacturing of high-
quality products and services that meet the diverse customer needs. One of the main steps in the
IBM process and capacity design is the principles that mainly guide the organization to meet
solutions to the various problems in the industry (Ben-Daya, Hassini, and Bahroun, 2017). some
of the processes involved in determining issues in the industry and creating solutions to those
problems include a significant focus on the possible users, excessive reinvention, and the creation
IBM COMPANY 15
of an empowering team composed of members from across the world. The second stage is called
the Loop that helps the IBM organization envision the industry's present and future status. This
step involves observing the current problems in the industry and constructing business processes
towards solving those problems (Cascio, 2021). The final step in the process and capacity design
of the IMB Company is the key used to ensure the company achieves the best outputs.
Innovation
Many of the leading innovations in computation have been pioneered by IBM. Among the
key innovations of IBM are the desktop P.C. and storage devices. In addition, the company is
currently working on new technologies such as new encryption methods, cloud computing, and
the development of quantum computers. The IBM Company promotes the principle of continued
innovation in the company that led to the formation of the IBM i-team installed to be in charge of
the company innovations. The IBM i-team comprises professionals that create innovative solutions
to the current problems in the organization industry of operation (Ben-Daya, Hassini, and Bahroun,
2017). The team then forms a list of priorities that define and initiate solutions in the
microelectronics, information, and technology industry. The innovations in the IBM Company are
mainly centered on innovations that directly impact the sector, innovations on new capabilities,
cost-cutting solutions, and the need for outsourcing. These innovative operations have led to
developing an IBM innovation model that helps select, review, and validate new ideas in the
industry.
Conclusion
Operations management is a crucial component in running any business. IBM has managed
to stay operational and relevant for so long because of the excellent management strategies that
IBM COMPANY 16
the company's management has adopted. IBM has practiced many ways to optimize operations
management concepts to elevate its productivity and growth. The company has achieved great
success as it has a well-functioning ecosystem and efficient management detailing its overall
organizational setting. Besides, it creates a sustainable approach that allows for efficient
management of the assets required to carry out its operations. The company has met its primary
objective of incorporating innovation and enhancing the computing world by developing and
creating advanced technologies for its consumers.
