Key Concept Explanation
The balanced scorecard is a strategic management tool introduced in the early 1990s by
Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton (Pierce, 2022). The balanced scorecard provides
organizations with a comprehensive approach to performance measurement beyond traditional
financial metrics. The balanced scorecard incorporates four key perspectives: financial,
customer, internal processes, and learning and growth (Meredith & Shafer, 2023). These
perspectives enable organizations to assess their performance from various angles, aligning their
activities with strategic objectives. As Pierce emphasizes, the balanced scorecard aids
organizations in designing meaningful metrics for maximizing data performance, highlighting its
adaptability across diverse contexts. In addition, the BSC enables companies to evaluate their
performance from multiple angles, ensuring a better understanding of its success factors (Rafiq et
al., 2020).
The balanced scorecard is beneficial for several reasons. It addresses the limitations of
relying solely on financial metrics by including non-financial perspectives (Tawse & Tabesh,
2023). This is because the balanced scorecard provides a comprehensive view of organizational
performance by incorporating financial and non-financial metrics across different perspectives.
