SIX SIGMA 2
Six Sigma
Six Sigma is a management process concept developed in the 1980s by Motorola to
improve manufacturing. Six Sigma aims to produce no more than 3.4 defects per million
opportunities (Meredith & Shafer, 2023). Although initially developed for manufacturing, Six
Sigma has grown into a system that can be used across various disciplines. The Six Sigma
principles are DMAIC: define, measure, analyze, improve, and control (Moreira et al., 2024).
The principles were developed by integrating the traditional scientific method into process
improvement concepts. The DMAIC principles allow managers to drive the organization with
facts, data, analyses, and continuous improvement. This has given Six Sigma the reputation for
being a flexible and comprehensive system that maximizes organizational success (Meredith &
Shafer, 2023). The topic of Six Sigma was chosen out of academic and professional curiosity. At
SoComGas, there are frequent opportunities to participate in Six Sigma training and certification
to earn yellow and green belts.
Comparison
When researching the concept of Six Sigma, it became clear that it had changed from
what was<initially stated in the textbook. Most of the articles in the school’s library were articles
referring to<Lean Six Sigma. Niñerola et al. (2021) observed that Lean Six Sigma was being
adopted on a broader scale than traditional Six Sigma. Lean practices offer organizations cost-
effective solutions to improve productivity and efficiency across many disciplines (Ionel, 2024).
One of the recommendations for future research made by Niñerola et al. (2021) was the
application of Six Sigma to environmental studies and other areas that may address global
concerns. Farrukh et al. (2023) discuss Green Lean Six Sigma (GLSS) and how it is being
implemented to address the concerns organizations have that Lean Six Sigma addresses, but also
SIX SIGMA 3
integrate factors to address environmental and sustainability concerns. The combined research
seems to indicate that the future of Six Sigma is a form of Lean Six Sigma or Green Lean Six
Sigma.
Article Summary
The article selected for this discussion is “Six Sigma Literature: A Bibliometric
Analysis,” by Niñerola et al. in 2021. The article is a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of Six
Sigma literature spanning almost 30 years. The researchers reviewed nearly 800 articles from
392 academic journal publications. Areas studied included author affiliations, research
methodology trends, and geographical factors.<The purpose of the study was to provide a
systematic and comprehensive review of research related to Six Sigma trends, identify
contributors, identify research gaps, and make suggestions for future research. The authors
identify Six Sigma as a business management system focusing on savings and costs compared to
other systems like Total Quality Management (TQM) or Lean. However, it has also allowed
organizations to improve customer satisfaction significantly.
The study found that Six Sigma research is predominantly conducted within business,
management, healthcare, and engineering. Lean Six Sigma, an integration of Continuous
Improvement and Six Sigma practices, has grown in adoption and implementation at a rate
higher than traditional Six Sigma. It was also revealed that the Six Sigma system is implemented
mainly in the United States. The authors noted that few international collaborations were limited
to organizations with similar languages and regional locations. The researchers recommend
applying Six Sigma principles in additional research areas like hospitality, environmental
studies, and education.

Biblical Integration
The principles within Six Sigma focus on improving processes, reducing defects, and
improving quality using disciplined methods and practices. The Bible teaches the<values of
integrity, continuous improvement, and diligence. The book of Colossians reminds one to work
with all one’s heart as if working directly for the Lord and not human masters (New International
Version Bible 1978/2024, Colossians 3:23). This can be related to the Six Sigma practice of
improving and implementing solutions. At its core, the message<is one of integrity and
continuous improvement. One of the principles of Six Sigma involves maintaining control over
processes and quality. This principle aligns with the book of Corinthians, which states that things
should be done in an orderly manner (New International Version Bible 1978/2024, 1 Corinthians
14:40).
Application
Six Sigma has the potential to be applied to a wide variety of organizations and sectors.
Farahbod et al. (2023) argued that it should be applied to cybersecurity management to<address
the constantly evolving threats of malicious actors. Cybersecurity management primarily
involves preventing, detecting, and protecting data from third-party cyber-attacks. Organizations
are continuously searching for ways to improve efficiency and have adopted technology that
increases digital visibility and produces more data to be analyzed for decision-making. One of
the side effects of the increased use of technology is that an increase in cyber vulnerability
accompanies it. (Farahbod et al., 2023). Cybersecurity Management may be a growing concern
as organizations become increasingly digitized by adopting Industry 4.0 methods that digitize
entire value and supply chains (Moreira et al., 2024).

Annotated Bibliography
Farahbod, K., Shayo, C., & Varzandeh, J. (2022). Six Sigma and lean operations in cybersecurity
management.Journal of Business and Behavioral Sciences,34(1), 99-109.
The article discusses the potential of implementing Six Sigma principles in cybersecurity
to improve security and minimize concerns. Advances in operations and supply chains
through the adoption of technologies have<improved productivity and visibility but have
also created the potential for cyberattacks. The severity of cyberattacks can vary from
minor nuisances to the complete disruption of operations. The article concludes that
cybersecurity management in the contemporary environment requires the implementation
of Six Sigma practices to stay ahead of malicious actors and minimize the risk of supply
chain and operational interruptions. The article illustrated the importance of integrating
cybersecurity management into operational management.

motivators for environmental sustainability: Managerial insights from a developed and
developing economy.Business Strategy and the Environment,32(8), 5187-
5210.<https://doi.org/10.1002/bse.3412
The article discusses the increase in adopting methods like green-lean-six-sigma (GLSS)
to manage their environmental impact and improve sustainability. Growing
environmental concerns have fostered the development of management methods that
include sustainability with traditional management concerns. GLSS is the product of
combining Six Sigma with Lean and Sustainability theories. Lean Six Sigma has grown
in popularity; GLSS will follow a similar trend. The study concluded that GLSS can be
successfully applied to various operations to reduce waste, emissions, and waste. Also,
SIX SIGMA 6
GLSS creates a continuous improvement culture and improves its<sustainability image.
The article provides an additional viewpoint on implementing sustainability efforts in
operational management.

85.<https://doi.org/10.24818/REJ/2024/88/07
The article discusses lean practices like Just-In-Time (JIT) and Total Quality
Management (TQM). Although initially developed for manufacturing operations, lean
practices can be used in several disciplines to streamline processes and improve
efficiency. The researchers argue that implementing lean practices is essential for an
organization’s long-term success and sustainability. Lean theories provide organizations
with robust and cost-effective solutions that improve productivity. The study found that
lean supply chain practices contribute to a continuous improvement culture that drives
excellence and improves competitiveness and customer satisfaction. The article
illustrated the need for Lean practices and some challenges and successes when
implementing lean practices in an operational management system. The article will
support the recommendation to implement Lean practices at SoComGas.

The article discusses Six Sigma principles: define, measure, analyze, improve, and
control (DMAIC). The authors propose a new Lean Six Sigma (LSS) framework named
LSS 4.0 to address the challenges of<high variability situations. Organizations must adapt
to dynamic markets, and many have adopted Industry 4.0 process improvement methods
and technologies. The study concluded that combining Industry 4.0 technology with Lean
Six Sigma tools and applying them in operations management can significantly improve
metrics like waste reduction, rework rates, cost, and lead time. This article illustrates how
Six Sigma practices can improve operations management. The information will be used
to support recommendations made to SoComGas on the implementation of LSS practices.
