Introduction: It is no secret the United States is in the middle of a National Nursing Shortage
crisis. The nursing shortage we are experiencing today is said to continue through 2030
(Mehdaova, 2017). Nursing shortages have been periodically happening since the early 1900s.
Different factors have led to each, from World Wars to economic recessions. The current
shortage that we are experiencing is unlike any other er have seen before. There is no simple
solution for the shortage, but strategies and practices can be put into place. Advances in
education, in the workplace, and policies could help.
Thesis Statement: The shortage of nursing staff is a national and international issue. Registered
Nurses (RNs) play a critical role in health care (Juraschek et al., 2019). Inadequate staffing leads
to poor health care services and adverse events. Most say the effects of the pandemic are going to
play a bigger role in nurses taking an early retirement.
