Data Collection Analysis
The information that was collected for the data analysis was taken from the Ohio State
Report for KIPP Columbus. KIPP Columbus consists of four different schools, that includes, a
primary, elementary, middle, and high school. They serve 1,877 students, have an attendance
rate of 87.7%, and a 4-year graduation rate of 95.1%. The first set of data that I reviewed from
their report card was their achievement measures, which measures the student academic
achievement as it relates to students performance on the Ohio’s State Tests. There overall school
for all of the schools was 56.6% and they received two stars out of 5 where were labeled as
needing support to meet state standards in academic achievement. From looking at the scores
that were broken down by grade level, it seems that most students are struggling in math and
reading.

The next section that I looked at was the progress component of the report card. In the
progress area, KIPP Columbus schools received two stars out of five with the message that there
was significant evidence that the school fell short of student growth expectations. The progress

component measures the academic performance of students compared to expected growth on
Ohio’s State Tests.
I also took a look at the Gap Closing data where they received three stars out of five.
This matrix is a combination of looking at how the school is meeting expectations for students in
English language arts, math, and graduation, this is a combination of all three measurements.

Early Literacy, they received two stars out of five, which means they need support to meet the
state standards for early literacy.

The next area of data I reviewed was the graduation component of the school report card,
which is a measurement of the four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate and the five-year
adjusted cohort graduation rate. In this area, they received five stars, which is the highest.
Receiving five says that your school has significantly exceeded state standards in graduation rate.
Reflection of Data
When reviewing the data, it shows that there are areas of improvement when it comes to
student math and reading scores, especially for high school students. Overall, KIPP Columbus K-
12 schools received an overall rating of 3 on their report card, which means they meet state
standards. The strength that came from the report was that of the graduation rate, again where
they received a rating of 5. Their second highest rating was that of the gap closing, where they
received a three. The math and reading scores were concerning to me because they were

extremely low. It made me wonder what supports are in place to help students make mastery.
Even when it came to the Early literacy component, they scored low, and that starts in third
grade. When looking at the schools around KIPP, they scored either the same or slightly higher.
This has me concerned because I wonder what support the state is providing to support the
education of our students. KIPP could be doing a lot more and should consider partnering with
local colleges to provide tutoring or seeking math and reading intervention for students to
improve. Even if you look at the graduation rate, which was a five, you begin to wonder how
accurate that is given the low reading and math scores. How are they preparing students for their
future? What are their best practices? I also wonder about their teacher turnover rate because that
could be linked to their low scores. When teachers leave mid-way in the school year, that does
affect students’ ability to grow. I would want to dig deeper into what curriculum they are using
and how much training teachers are receiving.
Goals
By June 2024, the percentage of Grade K-12 students scoring at or above standard levels
in Mathematics on the Ohio State by 10 percent through the use of small group instruction,
formative assessments, and professional development in the areas of teacher clarity

Each quarter of the 2024-2025 academic year, KIPP Columbus will monitor progress in ELA
and mathematics through teacher-prepared formative and summative assessments, and

create a roster of students who will benefit from response to intervention, and targeted small
group instruction.
Relate the Vision
The reason why these goals relate to the mission of KIPP Columbus is that their mission
statement says “ Together with families and communities, we create joyful, academically
excellent schools that prepare students with the skills and confidence to pursue the paths they
choose – college, career, and beyond – so they can lead fulfilling lives and create a more just
world” if that’s what they are aiming to do then they must provide the supports to see it happen.
You can’t create a joyful and academically excellent school if students are performing below
average. Students are not happy if they are low, and neither is the community. I believe they can
achieve these goals. They need to create partnerships with local colleges and universities to have
tutors come and help students. They can also do parent informational night to provide strategies
and resources on how to help their students at home. It takes a village to raise a child and need to
use their village.
As educators and leaders, we have to understand the importance and value of data
analysis. Data analysis is indeed a vital component of any organization whose goal is to measure
how they are making progress in their organization’s goals and vision. Having data provides
leaders and policymakers with the opportunity to have valuable information and actionable
evidence to take initiative, and make decisions. This goal is related to one of the goals created.
