Corporate Social Responsibility
I am afraid I have to disagree with Friedman's statement. Corporate social responsibility,
or CSR, has become integral to business operations in today's business environment. While
profits should be a priority for businesses, they should not just focus on maximizing profits for
their shareholders; they should also concentrate on the well-being of their employees, the
communities in which they operate, and the environment. CSR is about going beyond profit and
considering the ethical, social, and environmental impacts of business operations. It also
emphasizes the need for companies to be responsible and accountable for their actions and
actively contribute to the betterment of society and the environment. Therefore, it is essential for
corporations to embrace CSR and integrate it into their strategic perspective and daily operations
in order to bring long-term benefits to the organization and to society as a whole.
Corporate social responsibility is a concept that encourages companies to consider and
address the social, environmental, and economic impacts of their operations. With the growing
awareness of social and environmental issues, companies are now expected to go beyond profit-
making and take responsibility for their economic, social, and environmental impacts. It
emphasizes that corporate social responsibility is a moral obligation and a strategic imperative
for businesses today. By integrating social and environmental concerns into their business
decisions, companies can foster positive change and make a meaningful impact.
Implementing a strong corporate social responsibility strategy can bring numerous
benefits to businesses. These benefits include enhanced reputation, increased customer loyalty,
improved employee morale and retention, strengthened relationships with stakeholders, access to
new markets and business opportunities, risk mitigation, and improved financial performance.
(Novitasari & Agustia, 2022). It requires a comprehensive approach that involves collaboration

with various stakeholders, such as employees, customers, communities, and government
agencies. This collaboration is crucial for identifying key social and environmental issues, setting
goals, and implementing effective strategies that may help to minimize waste and pollution,
promote fair labor practices, support local economies, and prioritize the health and safety of
employees and consumers.
In conclusion, corporate social responsibility is not just an option for businesses but a
necessity in today's society. Companies must go beyond profit-making and consider their social,
environmental, and economic impacts on society. By practicing CSR, businesses can build a
positive reputation, foster strong relationships with stakeholders, and create a better world for all.
It is time for businesses to embrace and integrate corporate social responsibility into their
strategic perspective and daily operations to bring long-term benefits to the organization and
society as a whole.
Hi Faith! I enjoyed reading your thoughtful and insightful post on social responsibility. I
have the same biblical worldview as you do.
The concept of social responsibility in business has been a topic of ongoing debate.
While economist Milton Friedman famously claimed that the sole social responsibility of
businesses should be to make profits, this view has been challenged by those who argue
that businesses have additional obligations to society. From a biblical worldview,
business leaders are called to prioritize serving others over financial gain. The Bible
teaches that followers of Jesus Christ should use the resources they have been blessed
with to advance God's Kingdom further and to care for those in need. While profit is
important, it should not be prioritized over serving people.
In today's society, businesses are increasingly expected to take on social responsibilities
beyond maximizing profits. According to Manley, et al., (2023), a recent study found that
85% of millennials believe it is important for companies to implement programs to
improve the environment. Corporate social responsibility is good not only for the
environment but also for social justice and equity, employees and shareholders, and brand
and profitability. This means that businesses that prioritize social responsibility are likely
to appeal to younger generations, who will make up 75% of the workforce by 2030.
However, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to social responsibility in business. While
some businesses prioritize social responsibility over profits, others argue that their
primary responsibility is to their shareholders. There are also concerns that businesses
that prioritize social responsibility may face negative consequences, such as reduced
profits or increased costs. Balancing social responsibility and profitability can be a
complex task.

Despite these challenges, many businesses recognize social responsibility's importance in today's
society. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, corporations have been under increased
pressure to demonstrate their social responsibility. Many have donated to social justice
organizations and causes to show solidarity. While not everyone may agree with the
decisions that businesses make, it is clear that social responsibility is an increasingly
important consideration for businesses today.
In conclusion, while Milton Friedman's statement about business having only one social
responsibility - to make profits - is persuasive, it is limited in its applicability to a biblical
worldview. As Christians, we are called to prioritize serving others and advancing God's
Kingdom through the resources we have been blessed with. While profit is important,
social responsibility is equally crucial. However, businesses must also balance their
obligations to society with their need to remain profitable. Ultimately, businesses must
strike a balance between profitability and social responsibility to steward God's creation
in a manner that honors Him and serves others.
