Master Production Schedule
What is a Master Production Schedule & How it can be Implemented
Production is a complex operation that focuses on managing both manufacturing capacity
and the availability of essential materials to meet consumer demand. To be successful,
manufacturing companies need to manage their stock levels while maintaining a production
timeline. This allows manufacturing companies to keep products flowing to the marketplace to
meet the needs of consumer demand. To do this, the master production schedule (MPS) was
created. The MPS is a specified plan manufacturers use to align a company's resources and
production efforts with customer demand over a specific time (Mansouri et al., 2019). The MPS
can span a few weeks to several months, or even years, depending on the item being produced,
manufacturing times, and forecasted demand, according to Mansouri et al. The MPS works off
the following data inputs: initial inventory, sales forecasts, existing order backlog, and units to
produce during a period (Liberty University Custom, 2021).7
The MPS is an essential tool for manufacturers of all sizes as it aids in the production
planning process by helping manufacturers manage their various resources, production capacity,
and meeting customer demand efficiently (Amaranti et al., 2020). When implemented correctly,
the MPS partners with the company bill of material files or what parts are needed to make each
item and the company's inventory level files to create a complete picture of what can be
