Implementation of an Integrated Logistics System
Key Concept Explanation
Logistics is arguably the most important aspect of any organization as solid logistical foundations help
businesses provide the demanded product or service to the right customer at the right time. Properly
implementing and integrating logistical systems into businesses is crucial and should be carefully
researched prior to deciding which system would best fit the organization and processes. Increasing and
varying consumer demands and global markets add to the complexity of integrated logistics systems
and business managers looking to develop efficient and effective processes. “Implementing integrated
logistic supportprinciples in supporting such systems improves the organization’sbottom line and
reduces the total ownership and life-cycle costs” (CITE). These systems are comprised of resources,
networks, products, transportation, and processes that make up supply chains. Implementing integrated
logistics systems from the start can be challenging to change already established practices and costly;
however, integrating full systems can also provide business managers with the opportunities to create
logistical tools from the beginning.
Integrated logistics systems are interesting to me and I would like to further my studies so that I can
apply these lessons to my own organization and help increase the efficiency and lean practices in
complex supply chains. I am interested in learning how to most effectively adopt and implement these
logistical tools into any business.
Comparison
This supply chain and business model greatly assists managers in organizing and synchronizing all
facets of organizations and logistical networks so that customers’ demands can be met. There is much
research that supports business advantages in implementing integrated logistics systems and proves
that managers should deliberately decide how and which logistical systems they should adopt into their
own organizations. “In the contemporary global business markets environment, when the business
markets are getting more and more commercial, there
are growing demand for effective management of material flows” (Hart, 2017, p. 298). Technology and
automation have drastically assisted supply chain managers in utilizing logistical system software that
collects, stores, and analyzes data more efficiently to provide managers with more accurate decision-
making data. Automation can assist companies in maximizing practices in many different operations
within businesses, from overproduction waste to defects to waste of transportation; mapping tools
include production responsiveness approach (PRA) and data dependency diagram (DDD) (Hart, 2017,
p. 299). There are many models available to supply chain managers that can analyze these factors of
production and support lean production, especially in manufacturing businesses.
Because the manufacturing industry is so complex, there are numerous opportunities for data to be
inaccurate. However, the proper utilization of integrated logistics systems and automation technology
assist in minimizing inaccurate data and providing business managers with the most accurate
information while also synchronizing departments across organizations (Li et al., 2020). Integrated
logistics systems are crucial for synchronizing the numerous departments in manufacturing businesses
and allowing business managers to maximize efforts in allocating the proper components and resources
required for production (Wi?cek et al., 2019). By utilizing these logistical efforts, businesses can
decrease costs and increase inventory management operations all while remaining flexible in
unpredictable and constantly demanding markets. By business managers incorporating these logistical
systems into their organizations, they are increasing competitive advantage and developing their supply
chain practices.
Article Summary
The chosen article discusses many advantages of incorporating integrated logistics systems into supply
chain networks. It is important that the first steps in doing this consists of making awareness across the
organization of implementing these systems as well as prepare for training in applicable departments. It
is important for production, manufacturing, and inventory managers especially to have logistics systems
training and education so that they are able to assist employees in all functions of software and data
collection and analysis; it also contributes to gaining organizational commitment. Technological
advances and information technology have greatly contributed to the successes of integrated logistical
systems by providing opportunities to reduce waste in cost, time, and labor (Wi?cek et al., 2019, p.
1308). Thankfully, supply chain managers have come together to research and develop intricate and
complex systems so that functions and departments can be more organized and synchronized, enabling
smoother and more accurate logistical operations.
Logistics hubs are becoming more prevalent in today’s society and should be utilized properly to
maximize supply chain efforts across the globe. “Some have developed mathematical models and
applied Bender’s decomposition approach to solve the multi-period hub location problem while others
have applied a location-allocation model to a regional intermodal goods movement system” (Wi?cek et
al., 2019, p. 1315). Business managers have been able to use these logistics hubs and integrated
systems to allocate products to their customers more efficiently and effectively.
Application
Supply chain networks and managers have been more apt to integrating these logistical systems into
their organizations in order to increase the efficiency and maximize competitive advantage opportunities.
Many global industries and businesses have incorporated these integrated logistics systems into their
daily practices, especially those in the manufacturing and production operations. Through this
development and integration, China has created efficient logistics parks (LP) and distribution centers
(DC) that assist businesses in transporting products over various mobility modes and efficiently fulfilling
consumers’ demands. They have developed complex computational procedures to analyze the
movement of goods from departments within organizations to external businesses over multimodal
transportation efforts (Wi?cek et al., 2019, p. 1320). This logistical model developed over the last
several decades “can be generalized to solve many logistics location and allocation problems. It can
also be extended to other service areas such as integrated healthcare systems that need to consider
multiple levels of service over multiple time periods” (Wi?cek et al., 2019, p. 1331). LPs and DCs have
become much more efficient in their product visibility as well as their movement operations with these
logistical system assets.
Not only is the utilization of integrated logistics systems important for business managers to prioritize;
however, it is just as important, if not more important for organizational leadership to incorporate the
right fit of logistics practices and have them be managed by the proper employees with adequate
training on the systems. If employees or managers are not properly trained in collecting, computing, or
analyzing the data, then inaccurate information may be inputted into the system or given to managers
when making crucial business decisions. The more education and training on the logistical systems that
is provided by companies, the more buy-in organizations will generally have to effectively utilize the
software, thus increasing competitive advantage and customer satisfaction.

There are many prospective ways in leaning out supply chain operations and incorporating advanced
technology in order for them to be more efficient. Markets are extremely competitive and complex and
by implementing successful integrated logistics systems, businesses can gain higher satisfaction rates
and competitive advantage over others. “The integrated logistics management system of an industrial
company should be formed
by the sub-systems of the planning, management and control, the particular functional
areas” (p. 2). The right employees and leadership should be in control of the logistics management
systems and discern what supply chain tools should be practiced in order to have the most effective and
synchronized organizations.

Resource allocation is one of the most difficult functions in a businesses’ operations; it consists of
complex scheduling, cost analysis, and demand fulfillment needed for successful business practices. As
the article depicts, there has been extensive research conducted in order to develop more efficient
supply chain systems by reducing bottlenecks and increasing the utilization of production logistics
systems (PLS). These value-added processes greatly increase the effectiveness of business operations
and help maximize profits. Thankfully, there are numerous developmental tools that assist companies in
improving their integrated logistics systems and forecasting product materials that are required for the
production of final goods.

This article discusses the advantages of integrating logistics systems into organizations and supporting
recent technological advancements. It includes a case study that demonstrates how implementing these
supply chain practices into businesses can decrease costs associated with life-cycle products and the
rapid modernization of technology. Long life cycles are considered to be 40 years or longer and can
include product upgrades during this timeframe. “Cannibalization, modification,
mothballing, refurbishment, and upgrades will probably be managed successfully. In short, the system’s
reliabilityand availability should be significantly improved” There are many functionality or maintenance-
induced errors that can be mitigated through the proper implementation of integrated logistics systems.

With as complex as supply chain networks have developed to be within the last several decades,
businesses have needed to implement integrated logistics systems and create multi-echelon and multi-
period logistics practices. “The location of logistics facilities at different echelons of a supply chain is
identified and the needs for facility expansion or closing during different time periods are determined”.
China and other global nations have recognized the need for intense training in logistics systems
structures and practices as well as the disseminated responsibilities that must be adhered to in order for
the operations to function properly. It is inevitable that companies will fail without proper structure,
training, and technology that supports these logistical endeavors.

The last three decades have provided exponential advancement in automation technology which has
greatly supported logistical operations in successful businesses. This article shows in-depth research
conducted on automation logistics systems and complicated mathematical equations that formulate
outputs for business managers to utilize in decision-making processes. The automation systems were
not beneficial for some businesses to implement in the study due to the complexity of the logistics
systems and inability to properly incorporate the practices into the organizations. The case studies in the
article showed that overall, automation tools have assisted businesses in increasing their economic
competitiveness, especially in the manufacturing industry.

IMPLEMENTATION OF AN INTEGRATED LOGISTICS SYSTEM 1
Discussion Thread: Implementation of an Integrated Logistics System
Howell
IMPLEMENTATION OF AN INTEGRATED LOGISTICS SYSTEM 2
Key Concept Explanation
In business processes, project managers are tasked with planning, monitoring, and
executing responsibilities related to said projects. Project managers take into consideration their
team’s skill-sets, the resources made available to them, what the overall goal is to accomplish,
timelines, the strategies to employ, information technology, the project budget, as well as the
phases that are integrated in the project process. Xue et al. (2020) explains that because labor
markets are changing, that project managers are in demand, and states that the, “Project manager
has a key role in the project and this role provides the ability to control many aspects of the
project” (p. 2). I am interested in this topic due to academic curiosity after being reintroduced to
it in my assigned textbook readings. An article that I read discussed sustainability measures and
activities, and questioned whether project managers could facilitate sustainability in
organizations. This further interested me in the potential project managers have in setting
organizations up by designing a more sustainable future. Since project managers operate as the
task overseers of an organization, the scope that they utilize to determine how to go about
accomplishing something allows them to view possibilities in an interconnected way to harness
the efforts of the collective.
Comparison
In the textbook, project management (and project managers) are discussed briefly in this
week’s assignment readings, and subsequently program managers are introduced to this section.
As it relates specifically to project managers, what was learned about them put these employees
in the context of what their responsibilities are in conjunction with the use of Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Project managers in these instances use ERP software and its
systems to interpret, disseminate, and make use of quantifiable data to determine how to go
IMPLEMENTATION OF AN INTEGRATED LOGISTICS SYSTEM 3
about coordinating activities and carrying out the necessary strategies to meet goals. As was
alluded to in the text, project managers use ERP software as the central system by which to base
their time projections on, and how they are to distribute resources in the planning process.
Anantatmula (2008) shares that, “Firms invest in PM [project management] tools and techniques,
such as computer software for sophisticated schedule and budget tracking in intricate
organizational process designs like concurrent engineering” (p. 34). In contrast, the integration of
software alone does not equate to project performance.
In comparison, what has been shared in one article are not the duties of a project
manager, but their success-related qualities. Due to some traditional critical success factors
excluding human qualities in favor of social or cultural factors, the authors chose to introduce
skills that extend beyond soft competencies. Alvarenga et al. (2018) explains, Soft skills involve
issues which are at many times intangible, such as leadership, vision, motivation, commitment,
values, interpersonal relationships, ethics and others. However, it’s important to stress on soft
skills focused training and development to project managers” (p. 9). The authors highlight that
education and training are non-negotiable fundamentals to the preparedness of project managers,
but that additional competencies are needed to produce more well-rounded and adept managers
that can lead the charge towards not only data accuracy and integration (as is important in supply
chain management), but also using data to impact profits and organizational goals.
Article Summary
The article written by Fang Fu and Wei Xing of the School of Economics and
Management in China is titled An Agent-Based Approach for Project-Driven Supply Chain
Problem Under Information Asymmetry and Decentralized Decision-Making, and it examines
the relationship between project managers and supply chain entities. Fu and Xing (2021) states
IMPLEMENTATION OF AN INTEGRATED LOGISTICS SYSTEM 4
that, Effective supply chain management is critical for projects, because it can avoid time and
cost overrunsintegrated project planning can help to define these relationships and to enhance
the project performance” (p. 1). The authors propose that organizations design a communication
sector that can exist between project agents and supplier agents and refers to this constituent as a
mediator. This may need to be implemented as some suppliers could be less inclined to disclose
such information as is deemed “private, which could be at the ultimate risk of project managers
who are not privy to information that should be made accessible to them to enable them to
improve project performance. In what they explain to be project integrated planning, authors Fu
and Xing (2021) shares that it comprises project scheduling, as well as material order, and
supplier selection, and states that, “In a project-driven supply chain, the procurement plan is
integrated with the project schedule, and the coordination between the project manager and the
suppliers is mainly ensured by a contract” (p. 3).
Application
Project management is not exclusive to supply chains and requires constituents across all
organizational sectors to work in an interconnected way to allow knowledges and access to
certain information to intersect. This is all done in an effort to produce whatever the desired
results are of the projects the organization undertakes. Xue et al. (2021) explains that project
management skills are dynamic (as opposed to simply static), and states that, “Cohesive project
teams should create a leadership and authority structure to integrate functional elements, skills
and discipline into a cohesive whole, to achieve the goals of the project. The project team’s key
role is ‘not to do the job but to organize the decision process’” (p. 2). Project managers oversee a
wide scope of tasks and must learn and state what each phase (i.e., planning, executing,
monitoring, etc.) requires and entails in order to employ the proper internal change agents.
IMPLEMENTATION OF AN INTEGRATED LOGISTICS SYSTEM 5
Project managers determine budgets, estimate costs, develop schedules, the duration of
each phase, ensure quality management and control, procure resources, identify and calculate
possible risks, allocate funds for project costs, and monitor efforts to make necessary
adjustments to align more closely to stated goals and measures. These managers must possess
skills related to conflict resolution, as well as the necessary management expertise to produce an
adaptive team that has the technical skills needed during the project process. Verenych and
Bushuyev (2018) explains that, “The blended mental space transforms knowledge, practice, and
skills in new knowledge, practice, and skills, which after the closing of the project enriches each
mental space by extending and deepening its content” (p. 1694). For these reasons,
communication structures should incorporate all and not some because everyone must be on the
same page and know what their roles are because their teams and organizations depend on them
to carry their weight.

Anantatmula explains that research that has discussed and studied the benefits of
integrating technology in a workplace has not typically explained how it relates to
improving business performance in terms of project performance. This article chooses to
study what is referred to as people-related factors of project performance in order to
develop a project manager performance model to justify how project managers use
technology to improve project performance.

scheduling, cost of transporting raw materials, etc.), and explains that in order to facilitate
information being transferred between these two entities in order to inform the decision-

making process, that organization should create solutions to allow these entities to work
together. In their model, they show what is known as the agent-based approach between
project agent, supplier agent, and mediator in order to negotiate between what project
managers need versus what suppliers will give them in terms of information.

In their article, Interaction Researching Mental Spaces of Movable Context,

consider the perspective of project managers, stakeholders, and movable context to posit
that interactions between each depends on mental spaces. The four mental spaces that
they discuss in their article are movable context, project manager, stakeholders, and
project, and they take this a step further to say that project managers must understand the
principles of interaction between these entities at all times. These elements are all
necessary as it relates to project implementation to ensure goals are met on time, and that
all parties are clear in expectations.

in project managers, which lead them to discuss soft competencies and how they can lead
to project managers being able to improve an organization’s project sustainability
through innovation. The authors employ a model to determine the relationship between
these elements (soft competencies, innovation, and project sustainability) and the skills
project managers should have to be equipped with managing projects in an effective
manner.

Key Concept Explanation
The implementation of logistics information systems is a fascinating topic that focuses on
improving corporate operations. My interest in this subject arises from a desire to learn more
about employment options in logistics systems. Companies deal with a variety of items that must
be coordinated from suppliers to buyers. Businesses can use logistics information systems in
various ways to meet organizational goals thanks to technological advancements. According to
research, careers in logistics necessitate technological improvement. Product information aids in
the accurate forecasting of sales. One of the most recent uses in the field of logistics is the usage
of blockchain technology. Planning and teamwork are required for the effective supply chain
management. Working in the supply chain department necessitates a thorough knowledge of
logistics systems, including automation. For example, to foresee the future, it is necessary to
understand client wants. Strategies that encourage management processes and guide workers to
attain the business aim must be incorporated into the forecasting process. Employees must
receive training on integrating digital technologies as part of the digitization of logistical systems
(Mohamed, 2018).
Evaluating information demands in product labeling, investigating electronic document
sharing, addressing data mismatch, and designing data management systems are just a few of the
critical competencies in logistics. Understanding the processes that aid in the flow of information
is required for careers in logistics departments. Logistics systems are essential in any business
for transforming data to information, presenting it helpfully for decision-making, and connecting
it to the information system's decision-assisting mechanisms. As a result, logistics information is
a component of an organization's information system and is targeted towards logistics decision-
making issues. Connectivity is emphasized when implementing a logistics system, as the
3
logistics system connects the organization to suppliers, corporations, and manufacturers located
worldwide. The implementation also focuses on adopting new technology to stay on top of the
latest market trends. The discussion focuses on the challenges or issues that arise when
implementing logistic systems in a company. The absence of management assistance, the cost of
adopting the techniques, and data security hazards are challenges in implementing the strategies.
The issue is interesting since it provides additional information about the many difficulties of
adopting logistics systems and the various approaches that management can take to overcome
them. The implementation phase necessitates a well-thought-out strategy that will allow
management and the company to assess the impact of the changes and make organizational
adjustments to ensure that service levels do not suffer (Entchev, 2018).
Comparison
The field of logistic information systems is concerned with improving logistic systems in
corporate organizations to improve performance. The topic corresponds to the logistics
management content covered in the classroom module. The two show that sophisticated
technology is vital in several corporate domains. In digital form, logistics information systems
follow a well-organized framework. Putting the knowledge into action may necessitate
appropriate software and computer technologies to aid data processing. To achieve meaningful
corporate goals, managers must concentrate on a variety of variables. The topic allows for a
better knowledge of logistics system architecture and the requirement for corporate logistics
systems to be interconnected. The integrated operations planning and logistics are addressed in
the module content and textbook. Understanding the concepts and how to apply them in real-life
situations is critical (Vass & Gustavsson, 2017). To develop or achieve well-coordinated
functions of numerous components, companies must give logistical support. Because it facilitates
4
the conveyance of information via IT systems to enable data processing, the research content is
relatively comparable to the topic learned in class. The information comes from a company that
uses logistics information systems to make data collection and processing easier. Knowledge is
created when data is recorded in computer systems, and it is critical for enhanced logistic
processes.
To compare it to the critical issue assigned for the module, the study was comprehensive.
The main subject is the installation of logistics systems. In this regard, the study focuses on the
different problems that may obstruct implementing the procedures in question. There are no
significant disparities between the research findings, and the module studied throughout the
week. It was feasible to assess the numerous problems in a broad sense from the readings and
how they would affect the logistics system implementation process. On the other hand, the study
findings present the same difficulties but a more thorough approach (Rahman et al.,2018).
Further research found that logistics encompasses a wide range of activities carried out
by a company. Furthermore, as observed in the textbook readings, logistic systems are required
for an organization's logistics performance to be maximized. On the other side, the importance of
maximizing environmental performance in logistics is discussed in the essay. The similarities
show that the central theme in the textbook readings on the implementation of logistics systems,
which emphasizes the difficulty of implementing such strategies, is related to the challenges
described in the article. Differences in logistics system implementation can take many forms, and
the chosen report focuses on the implementation issues that environmental practices in logistics
face. As a result, the essay aims to comprehend the logistics implementation process and the
many challenges that can obstruct it. In this example, the article compares the module that
describes logistics system implementation and the general difficulties that may arise during the
5
process. The paper discusses many challenges that impede applying environmental principles in
logistics, similar to textbook readings in class. Reverse logistics is used in the implementation,
and there are both internal and external impediments. Further research revealed that the barriers
mentioned in the article are similar to those discussed in textbooks, with some of the most
significant obstacles being high costs to implement the change in logistics, a lack of support from
management and the government, insufficient human resources, a poor organizational culture,
and a lack of effective corporate leadership policies (Tijan et al., 2019).
The seminar covered various topics, including supply chain planning, which may be
accomplished using internal firm resources and mechanics to initiate planning. Supply chain
planning aids in the coordination of critical logistics and supply chain resources. The research
examined in this paper was primarily concerned with logistical information systems, which
included blockchain technology. The topic is essential because it helps people comprehend why
they need to use technology more efficiently. Collaborative planning and approaches that
improve logistical performance are required (Heriyanti & Ishak, 2020). Some companies fail to
coordinate their business predictions to boost demand by sharing information.

Discussion implementation of logistics Response Two
Hi Joelle,
Thank you for your response. Additionally, project managers are entrusted with planning,
monitoring, and executing obligations linked to projects in corporate operations. Project
managers examine their team's skillsets, the resources accessible to them, the ultimate aim to be
achieved, timetables, the methods used, information technology, the project budget, and the
phases that make up the project process. Project managers are in demand since labor markets are
changing, and the project manager has a crucial role in the project. This function allows the
project to regulate many areas (Fu & Xing, 2021).
The role project managers might play in establishing companies by envisioning a more
sustainable future. This is mainly because project managers are the tasked overseers of an
organization. Their scope to determine how to do anything that helps them perceive options in a
connected way, allowing them to harness the collective efforts. Solid logistical foundations let
organizations supply the desired product or service to the correct consumer at the right time,
making logistics probably the most critical part of any firm. It is vital to adopt and integrate
logistical systems into enterprises properly, and it should be thoroughly examined before
determining which method would best suit the organization and procedures. Integrated logistics
systems and company managers seeking to establish efficient and effective operations face
increasing and changing consumer demands and worldwide marketplaces.
Implementing integrated logistic support concepts in supporting such systems improves
the bottom line and lowers the organization's total ownership and life-cycle expenses. Supply
chains are made up of various resources, networks, products, transportation, and procedures.
Putting in place integrated logistics systems from the outset can be difficult and costly because it
requires changing existing processes; nevertheless, integrating comprehensive systems can allow
business managers to construct logistical tools from the start (Verenych & Bushuyev, 2018).
