SCM Topic #3 Social Media & Supply Chain
Background
Social media plays a crucial role in supply chain management, encompassing
procurement, manufacturing, demand and inventory, logistics, and supply chain relationship
management. Research on social media applications in supply chains is growing and is expected
to become dominant in the future. With the rise of social media data analytics tools, managers
can gain a deeper understanding of stakeholders and improve service levels. Recent global
supply chain disruptions have highlighted the resilience of supply chains under severe
conditions, emphasizing the importance of social media applications in addressing these
challenges (Hoang et al., 2023).
Social media can have a major role in supply chain management by encouraging
cooperation, reducing expenses, and improving customer satisfaction. Social media's capacity to
link companies with partners and suppliers is among its most important advantages for supply
chain management. Social media data may be used to track and evaluate product demand, spot
new trends and business prospects, and predict the wants and requirements of your target
audience. You may also validate your demand projections and modify your supply strategies with
the use of social media data. Additionally, social media may be used in a number of supply chain
management domains to improve customer happiness, sales, engagement, communication, and
environmental scanning (Chae et al., 2019). Furthermore, social media in a business-to-business
context will inevitably aim to transform communication from a one-way message to a more
dynamic and engaging conversation.
Potential Consequences
SCM TOPICS 3
Social media platforms can expose companies to data security and privacy concerns,
leading to unauthorized access or confidentiality breaches. The continuous stream of information
can overwhelm supply chain managers, making it challenging to extract relevant insights.
Improper social media posts can cause reputation damage, especially if they go viral, impacting a
company's brand image. Cyberattacks and hacking can also expose supply chain data to theft,
manipulation, or malicious activities. Regulatory compliance in the context of social media can
be challenging, as companies must ensure they abide by data protection and industry-specific
regulations (Linda, 2023).
To protect supply chain information, companies should implement robust data encryption
and security measures, such as secure private channels and multi-factor authentication. Utilize
data analytics and automation tools to process and filter vast amounts of social media
information, identifying and prioritizing relevant data for decision-making. Establish a robust
social media monitoring and moderation strategy to track online presence, address negative
comments, and maintain a positive reputation. Develop and maintain strict cybersecurity
protocols to guard against potential cyberattacks, with regular audits and threat assessments.
Create a compliance framework to ensure social media activities align with industry-specific
regulations and data protection laws, respecting legal boundaries (Linda, 2023).
Proposed Response
If I decided to use social media, it would be implemented to help build and grow
relationships among trading partners in the supply chain. Also, to provide insights into industry
issues, competition, and key performance indicators like carrier on-time performance and slow
payments. Social media can also be used to send posts about shipment arrival and departure and
to inform about accidents and road closures that affect delivery times. Moreover, it can be used

to search for specific shipments, coordinate shipments, report weather conditions, and facilitate
responses to supply chain disruptions. Performance information can be posted, and influencers
and thought leaders can be discovered. Trends can be analyzed, and suppliers and vendors'
reputations can be monitored. Overall, social media can be a valuable tool for enhancing supply
chain relationships and ensuring efficient operations.
