Week 2 Discussion Board: Grass Group
Question 19.5 is about choosing the right research method to pass on a reports within the
business. A memo should be enough for the e-speed snapshot. It could discuss with brevity the
importance of the use of the internet. It is more formal to address the importance of the research
you are explaining through this memo. This seems like something that needs to be sent to the
masses because it is an announcement of sorts. A business memo is an appropriate type of
communication to use when making company announcement such as the benefits of the e-speed
that needs to be sent to the masses of your co-workers.
“We need the speed of instant data processing as a company. We have not been very
efficient in this area of our work. The internet has forever transformed the speed of data results.
The internet has given marketers a waste of “e-time”—data compressed and processed in
virtually the same time. It can skew the quality in data, when the speed available was enough to
make results of surveys immediately. The Opinion Search calls this industry first dataCAP for
“Data Control and Access Portal.” Among other opportunities, dataCAP provides such as:
-Real-time frequencies
-Real-time cross-tabulation
-Real-time open-ended verbatim responses.
-Real-time quota status
-Daily status of your projects
-Daily call dispositions reports
While also being fast, dataCAp delivers info that is encrypted to protect privacy of all
data from every user. Speed without compromising the quality of the data is what makes this
processor worth using.”
A memo requires an introduction, a problem statement about what is missing within the
company before presenting the solution. We must list the research methods used such as what
kind of objectives are meant to be achieved through this. The background information about
what is being proposed would be considered heavily useful to know why this product or new
update to the company is useful. It is to the point because a useful product like this doesn’t
require much persuasion. From here we include conclusions that include summarized as the end
and recommendations from credible sources that would give reliable merit for the product that
the company is switching to (Kelchner, 2016).
Memos are incredibly important because they bring attention to the problems and the
solve problems in a concise manner that doesn’t require extensive planning. Memos are the most
effective when they connect the purpose of the writer with the interests and needs of the reader,
which works similarly to the world of supply and demand of businesses. The audience is the
company that is struggling to effectively find a quick and effective way to process their data and
update their work (Lab, OWL, & Purdue, 1995).
We see Jesus being brief and full of the same tact when he shared the Gospel with
outsiders. He told them of their depravity, then informed them of their solution and he taught the
disciples to meet the needs of the people whether it be spiritual, mental, or physical as described
through the command in Matthew 10:8.
Question 19.7: Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey are two women who have been
incredibly successful in the talk show business. Oprah Winfrey hosted The Oprah Winfrey
Show which aired for many years, but is no longer on the air and was the highest ranked talk
show. Ellen DeGeneres hosts The Ellen DeGeneres Show which has gained a lot of popularity
and has been considered the heir of Oprah Winfrey’s talk show. As revealed through a written
report, there are several items which account for Ellen DeGeneres’ increased popularity that has
led to comparable ratings between Ellen and Oprah such as the upbeat and inspirational vibe of
the show, Ellen’s relaxed and relatable characteristics, and emotional issues. In addition to these
items, there should be other questions addressed concerning what has led to Ellen’s increased
ratings and popularity such as the roles technology has played and the overall environment Ellen
provides for viewers.
Perhaps one of the questions that should be addressed in addition to the information
above is the role that technology has played in Ellen’s increased popularity. Social Media has
begun to play a large role in the lives of people all over the world and television series have also
begun to see the impact social media has. While Oprah’s show went off of the air several years
ago, Ellen’s show is airing during this time of an increase in social media usage. Ellen utilizes
many avenues of social media and has a YouTube channel and an app where clips from her
show can be viewed later and shared. This idea of social TV has been a relatively new topic and
Ellen has been able to use it to gain viewers for her show and reach a generation that places a lot
of emphasis on social media. According to Paganiand Mirabello (2011), “social TV allows
people to connect via social networks and mobile devices with people who share their passion
and interest, enhancing the viewing experience in a new way” (p. 43).
Ellen creates a very different environment for her viewers than Oprah Winfrey did. While
characteristics such as upbeat, inspirational, relatable, and relaxed have been used to describe
Ellen and her show, the question of how the environment is different on her show should be
asked. For instance, as stated in an article discussing Ellen’s career, her show has been known
for and liked for Ellen’s ability to provide an environment that is apolitical and filled with humor
(Skerski, 2007). In addition, according to the Los Angeles Times, Ellen’s “tangible empathy has
helped fuel DeGeneres’ growing popularity on multiple platforms, almost as though she made
compassion cool again on TV” (para. 2). Empathy and compassion are attributes important to
others and important to have as Christ followers as stated in 1 Peter 3:8. These things are each
aspects of the environment that Ellen provides on her show that should be considered in
addressing her rising popularity.
While technology and environment are just two of the questions that should be addressed
in the written report, there are several other items that could be considered in Ellen’s growing
popularity in comparison with Oprah Winfrey’s show and her popularity; however, based on the
items discussed, there are a few things the networks should consider when
franchising DeGeneres. The network should heavily involve the use of social media and create
an interactive environment for viewers. This may be especially important for a talk show. In
addition, the network should consider the needs of the viewers and the environment that would
be of most interest and most needed for viewers just like Ellen’s show has created an
environment that viewers feel drawn to and feel refreshed and comforted by. Overall, the
network should take into consideration the findings from the study and these additional research
questions discussed when franchising DeGeneres.
There are many factors that can affect the confidence of a small business. Some of these
factors are controllable by the small-business owner, while other factors may be outside of the
small-business owner’s control. Each of these factors are indicators of how well the small-
business community feel about their economic growth. The Index of Small Business Optimism,
which is included in the NFIB Research Foundation Report, describes in detail these factors that
affect the confidence small businesses. Some of the factors that the June 2012 report showed as
affecting small-business confidence were labor markets, inventories and sales, expansion as
well as other factors (“Overview-Small Business Optimism”, 2012).
Factors that Affect Confidence
The education level of the small business owner and their employees can also be a factor
that may affect the confidence of a small business. To continually grow a small business, the
owner must have the education and knowledge needed to compete with other small-businesses,
hire competent employees, as well as increase its sales/revenue. The Bible tells us at Proverbs
1:5 (ESV) to let the wise hear and increase in learning and the one who understands obtain
guidance. Not only must the owner possess the necessary knowledge needed to grow the
business, but the employees must also have the skills and knowledge needed to help the business
owner continuously grow the business (Janeska-Iliev & Debarliey, 2015). Business owners who
lack the skills and knowledge needed for small business growth as well as have employees to
may not be as highly skilled or trained in the profession may not have confidence in the
successfulness of their business. Studies have shown that having the proper knowledge of the
business is essential for creating growth and creativity (Janeska-Iliev & Debarliey, 2015). The
way I would incorporate this information into the report is by having a comparison bar graph that
shows the education level of the participants of the small businesses who answered the questions
that are in the NFIB Research Foundation report compared to the year over year sales growth or
decline of those same small businesses. When used in the correct way, a bar graph can serve as a
very effective tool in presenting data (Cooper & Schindler, pg. 535).
Another factor that may affect the confidence of a small business is the age of the
business, or in other words, the length of the time that the small business has been in operation.
Small businesses that have just started operations have some factors such as start-up costs and
customer retention, as well as learning how to become an entrepreneur and the best way to run
the business, that small businesses that have been in operation for longer may not have (Moos &
Botha, 2016). This fact may affect their confidence in a way that may cause them to question if
they will make it in the market like the longer running small businesses. The way I would
present this information in the report is through the most common way of presenting data, which
is through text presentation (Cooper & Schindler, pg. 517). In the text presentation, I would
discuss the percentage of small businesses that survive or a period of time, such as 5, 10, or 15
years. Studies have shown that the age of a small business does not have a significant effect on
the outcome of longevity of the small business (Moos & Botha, 2016).
Facts are usually the basis for a presentation. Not only would I present facts or statistical
data for smart phone application usage but also present on other research and the importance of
short-term cash flow forecasts in businesses. Another fact is that the research is scant on cash
flow forecasting even though most managers use it (Glaum, Schmidt, & Schnurer, 2015).
Another fact is that companies that focus on financial goals often value forecasting efforts
(Glaum, Schmidt, & Schnurer, 2015).
Statistics are used sparingly in order to maintain audience interest and are explained often
times through visual aids such as charts or graphs. Giving credit to where the statistical data is
gathered from helps validate and prove the data is from reliable sources. Using data correctly,
making sure it is properly interpreted, and relevant to the topic are all important aspects of
statistics. Statistics can show which companies use short-term cash flow analysis and if they are
more profitable. Many companies try to fly blind with forecasting cash flow which may not be
detrimental the first time but companies can only run out of money once. Experts in cash flow
forecasting have shown that “74 percent are able to forecast within a five percent accuracy”
(Glaum, Schmidt, & Schnurer, 2015). Analysts may put more faith into God and that he guides
them with the right decisions and insight. According to James 4:15, we do not control the
outcomes but we control how resources are used, planning, and have the ability to reassess,
readjust, and adapt to change. We are always aware of the risks and just have ways to deal with
them ahead of time.
Specific instance are brief incidents where specifics are broken down into general ideas.
Specific instances are brief and not detailed and help with relation and are highly developed
(Cooper, & Schindler, 2014, p. 552). Example is a single instance that is used for clarification.
Examples are usually not as developed but also are to help the venture capital company believe
or see the point. Some of the examples in the presentation may be hypothetical since forecasts
themselves are often hypothetical. Giving the venture capital company an example of how the
application might work could show how operating cash flows “anticipate cash inflows from sales
to customers and cash outflows to suppliers and employees” for a hypothetical company or even
a real company that uses forecasting (Glaum, Schmidt, & Schnurer, 2015).
Testimony/ Expert opinion is what experts say about the topic. Since I am not well
versed in technology I could try to gain confidence by showing goodwill, sense and moral
character. I would gain ethos by trying to get big business managers or owners to endorse the
need for such an application especially since they are busy and live off smartphones sometimes.
Also, getting a financial or accounting statement or endorsement would also be beneficial. Many
experts will agree within research that short-term cash flow forecasting has not been improved
much over the past fifteen years so an application would be a positive improvement (Ahmed, &
Ali, 2013). Top analysts could also help with application development because they rely on a
range on numbers and other aspects that others without expertise do not.
Analogies show similarities among things. For example, I might be able to compare how
the smartphone application will work by comparing it to say a bank account that allows manual
and pending transactions to show a forecast of funds a person has in their account. Metaphors
compare two things that seem uncommon but actually have a very important commonality. My
goal would be create the best possible story. The strongest connection would be considered as
Pathos or emotional connection between the venture capital company and me.
When presenting information to an audience, it is important to remember that
organization and structure allows the audience to follow along and understand what is being
presented to them. Baird (2009) found that well organized speeches significantly produced more
comprehension within audiences than did poorly organized speeches. Cooper and Schindler
(2014) suggest that presentations should be organized and tailored to best integrate the speaker,
content, audience, occasion, venue, and intended effect. They suggest ten different traditional
patterns of organization including topical, spatial, classification, climax order, problem/solution,
chronological, past/present/future, cause/effect/solution, pros/cons/recommendation, and
research briefing to best present the information to the audience.
Using the question prompt, the best way to explain the effectiveness of Toyota’s
advertising to restore public confidence campaign would be to use the cause/effect/solution
pattern. In this type of pattern, the first part of presenting the research describes the cause of the
problem, the next describes its effects, and finally the solution is presented. Using the question
prompt as an example, the presentation would start with the explanation to the audience of the
engineering defect in the accelerator pedal and the antilock brakes. Next, the speaker will
provide a description of how this defect effected sales, brand image and customer loyalty
(Cooper & Schindler, 2014). Lastly, the speaker would present what the research says would be
some of the best solutions for re-instilling consumer confidence.
The cause/effect/solution pattern is best because it informs the consumer of what the
problem was and how the company is going to fix it. When it comes to situations like these, the
company is essentially trying to rebuild the trust lost when the product failed. Swan, Trawick,
and Silva (1985) conducted a study on how to gain customer trust, and while the study was
conducted over 30 years ago, it still has valid points that are relevant today. The researchers
found that trust increases as the customer gains the impression that the salesperson is
dependable, honest, competent, customer oriented, and likable. When using the
cause/effect/solution pattern, the speaker is forced to acknowledge and admit the mistakes that
were made, and the ways that the company will fix them; thereby hopefully rebuilding some of
the trust that was lost. Furthermore, even the fact that Toyota did the proper research and is
trying to fix their problems for the benefit of their customer should also resonate with the
consumer. Proverbs 21:5 teaches “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads
to poverty” (New International Version). It is important for Toyota to slow down, conduct the
proper research on how to solve the problem, and then strengthen consumer confidence by
presenting the research in a well organized pattern.
