Busi 520 Class introduction:
My name is Felicia Bauder and I live in Pennsylvania. I love to ride my motorcycle and have
been a math teacher in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade for the last 20 years. I am just starting at
Liberty and this is my first class as I intend to get my MS in Marketing and Digital
Advertisement. This will be my second Masters degree, my previous being in Information
Technology in Education. I really feel God speaking to me to pursue a career in mission work. I
have spent the last ten years going on over 20 missions trips all over the world and in the United
State. I would love to be involved in the management and running of a group that runs missions
trips. A friend suggested that marketing would be a great asset in a position like this, so this is
the next step for me in that direction. I am very interested in how marketing and non-profit
organizations fit together.
Group consensus report
1. Describe Yourself: In a brief paragraph or two, describe your past experience working in
groups (at Liberty or elsewhere). What is your personality type? What are your annoyances?
How do you react under stress? How would your boss at work describe you?
When I attended Temple University for my undergraduate work in education group work
was different than what it is now. Mostly we discussed certain questions in class as a group and
reported on what we learned. While at Wilkes University I worked in a group where we used
google docs to compile a finished project as a group with the ability to each add certain parts to
the project and edit each others work. My experience in general with group work is that either
everyone takes part and does a portion of the work or certain people in the group do the majority
of the work.
I am the kind of person who sees the task ahead of me and plans how to accomplish it. I
rarely seek the help of others in more than brainstorming and coming up with the plan. I get
annoyed at people who procrastinate to the last second. If someone else can not do their part
until my part is done I will prioritize and plan to complete my part early. If it takes longer for
me to complete then I am not holding up everyone else. When I am under stress I take one step
at a time. I will stop and pray and seek guidance. Take a break and listen to some music to calm
down. Then take a look at the situation differently and try again.
My boss would say I take my work personally. I am willing to do whatever it takes to
help my students learn and be successful, not only in math but in life. I have high expectation
and hold my students accountable for their actions. I also am willing to stop and listen and when
necessary, and apologize when I make mistakes. I am responsible and reliable to do whatever is
assigned to me and to handle it professionally and appropriately.
2. Communication Expectations: Though it is required that group members communicate
Felicia Bauder

Page 2
substantively and weekly, what are your expectations about acceptable response times? How
many times per week should each team member check the Group Discussion Board? What role
will conference calls or online chats have in moving the group forward? For what issues will you
use the Group Discussion Board, online chats, etc.?
I realize that I am completing this course as well as working a full time job. I know other
students also work full time or have families. I expect everyone will try to do some homework
each night, but others have obligations and may not get on each night in the week. My goal is to
check in each night after work, but realistically I may not. I expect each person to check in every
other day. I don’t see making conference calls as we all have different schedules and this could
truly hinder progress. I feel online chats will be most effective in moving the group forward. I
assume the leader of the group will designate the roles that are available to the group and ask
who feels comfortable doing which role, or they will just assign roles. I also expect each of us
may come across questions as we complete our role and we can ask for suggestions or thoughts
from other group members on the issues we encounter.
3. Behavioral Expectations: What specific behaviors will lead to successful completion of the
project? What behaviors threaten the project's completion? How do you want others to describe
the quality and quantity of your effort? Describe your conflict resolution style.
The most important behavior that will lead to a successful completion of the project is
that of creating a timeline with expected dates for completion of various parts of the project.
Each group member should be scheduling time to work on the various parts of the project and
actually doing the work during that scheduled time, as well as allowing extra time in case it takes
longer than expected. Procrastinating will threaten the completion of the project, as well as a
failure to communicate with the group. I want others to say I went above and beyond their
expectations, and that I worked not only hard but intelligently. When it comes to conflict I
believe it is important to start by asking questions not by making accusations. Everyone is
coming at this from a different life experience and background and may not have the same
expectations. I also believe that it important to be willing to take constructive criticism so that
we may become someone others want to work with because they feel valued, appreciated, and
heard.
4. Flexibility Expectations: What circumstances are present in your life that might require a
request for flexibility? What, precisely, does flexibility mean to you? (Does it mean
"understanding" and "patience?" Does it mean "someone help?" Does it mean "do not hold the
operating rules of the group against me if I am having a hard time?") Lastly, if someone
encounters a problem (sickness, travel, etc.), when and how should he or she communicate this
to the group?

I teach full time and the marking period will be ending shortly at times my job will take
priority for a day or two. Flexibility to me means understanding and patience, it may mean
someone help if I am just not understanding with this new adventure into marketing being very
different than the norm for me. I believe it is important to communicate any issues with the
group via the discussion board. If an issue comes up and you leave a message on the board I
think it is important to be specific about what you can and can’t do and when or what you need
help with.
5. Performance Expectations: At what level should individual work be presented to the group?
Should all work submitted to the group reflect MBA-level writing, or is "draft mode" acceptable?
What final grade do you desire on the group project, and what, specifically, are you willing to do
to achieve it? How do you want to be known for the quality of your work?
I believe that “draft mode” would not be acceptable. The level of writing should be
more MBA level. I have had experience with reading other people’s drafts and it can be very
cumbersome to wade through. I want to earn an A on the project. I want to be know as a person
who does good quality work. In order to meet these expectations, I am willing to take
constructive criticism from group members. I want to do high quality work, but my
understanding and background is not in the area of business so I may be lacking in some basic
understandings in specific areas, and will not be offended if someone shares with me that my
interpretation was incorrect.
6. Expectations about Timelines: What does it mean to be timely? For some, being "on time" is
late, while others believe that being "on time" is actually early. Is being "on time" early or late?
(Keep in mind that being on time means different things to different people.)
Being on time for me is completing the assignment no later than the given deadline, and if you
can complete it earlier that is even better.
7. Final Submission: What are the expectations for the final submission of the group project? Do
you want it to be submitted earlier than the deadline time, so that you have a final chance to
“approve” the submission? If so, what time do you want that final submission to be? Do you
want to have it required that each student submits an “I approve” reply to the official
submission? Some students want to review everything one last time, prior to the official
submission. Other students assume that all of the changes have been made, and do not have the
desire to review everything again prior to the final submission. How do you specifically want the
final submission to be approached? (Keep in mind that the final submission, including any
approval discussion board replies, will need to be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Friday of
Module/Week 8. Therefore, your deadlines will also need to be on a consistent time zone (e.g.,
ET).

I believe the final submission should be submitted at least 2 days early so each member
can have a final chance to approve the submission. I think we should all submit our work by
Wednesday at 12:59 ET so that everyone that wants to approve it can have time to review the
final copy before the final submission occurs.
8. Conflict Resolution: How will group disagreements be resolved? Will the majority of votes
“count” in the result of a disagreement? How any potential conflicts will be resolved needs to be
discussed immediately. This eliminates potential confusion and/or frustration later on.
I think that the group should resolve any conflicts with a majority rule. If there would be
a tie then I think the group leader should make the final judgement call. I believe the group
should communicate with clear and concise language the problem and that there should be no
blame or accusations made. It should be our goal to build up our group members and help them
to learn by example. We should pray for each other, but everyone should be held accountable for
their actions or lack thereof.
Group Consensus Response 1
I have had similar experiences with working in groups with others. The utterance of the phase
“group assignment” is enough to send shudders down the spines of many who hear it. (Jaques, 1994, p.
72). I love this quote you started your paper with it sums my experiences with group work up
quite well. I am hopeful that we do not have an incoherent group like you described where one
or two members carry the weight of the assignment. I can really appreciate that you like me take
measures to avoid stress and logically plan out your work so that you can prioritize projects. I
think that skill will be very helpful as we go through this assignment together. You seem very
organized in your thought processes and in your writing. I wonder if you would be willing to
take on the role of leadership in our group as you seem to have a good deal of experience in this
area, and you seem to be very thorough and thoughtful. I also like that you are willing to do
whatever it takes to get the job done right. I to appreciate that to be on time submitting an

assignment is acceptable and late is not. Although I am in the frame of mind that if I can get
something done early that is even better. I also agree that majority rule and the objectives
outlined for the assignment should be the deciding factors in the way we resolve any conflicts.

Reply 2 Group Consensus
I feel like we agree that group work has been both good and bad for everyone. I to can not stand
for someone to get credit for a group project if they have not contributed their fair share. If I have to
work hard on something everyone else in the group should be working hard too.
I agree communication is important and that we need to check in at regular intervals even though
we all have busy lives a minimum of once every 2 days seems fair. I agree we need to be disciplined and
driven to do well and that attitude is half the battle. Dealing with conflict is important and I agree we
need to find the problem and determine how to deal with it so it doesn't repeat itself.
Collaborating involves finding a solution to the conflicting situation that satisfies both parties.5
An effort has to be made to actively pursue effective problem solving actions in order that all parties can
accomplish equally satisfying results (Howell, 2014).
I agree with your assessment that flexibility is patience and understanding and with all of us
working full time jobs we need to be considerate of each other. This means if I get on and check the
board today before you I might not see your response for up to 48 hours later. I can't imagine anyone
wanting to earn less than an A, but I know there are people who will do the minimum to get by. I would
expect everyone to turn in their assignments no later than the required deadline and a few days earlier if

someone needs to compile it into one cohesive document.

Faith and Integration #1
Aristotle defined character as “the decisions a person makes when the choice is not
obvious.” Another well-known definition of character is the way people act when no one is
looking. Firms that have “character” tend to perform better over time.
Find at least 1 Scripture verse that is related to character and to a firm that has character.
In a two-page (12 point, double-spaced) document that is in current APA format, discuss your
Scripture verse within the context of marketing management.
Relate this to a specific marketing organization of your choosing.
Discuss how Christian faith impacts marketing management decisions in the selected
organization, including how faith was the source of its marketing management decisions, Many
company founders have demonstrated such faith.

In the message version of the Bible, Philippians 2 :14-16 says,
Do everything readily and cheerfully—no bickering, no second-guessing allowed! Go
out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society.
Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God. Carry the light-
giving Message into the night so I’ll have good cause to be proud of you on the day that
Christ returns. You’ll be living proof that I didn’t go to all this work for nothing.
Chick fil-A’s founder Truett Cathy was a devout Southern Baptist; his religious beliefs
had a major impact on the company. The company's official statement of corporate purpose says
that the business exists "To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us.
To have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A (Chick-fil-A. (n.d.)).
There is no better example than Chick-fil-A, when it comes to great customer service and
a dedication to a brand’s core values. One of Cathy’s beliefs is that, you can’t do it all by
yourself. You multiply your efforts when you work through good employees. Cathy created a
company that multiplied its sales, and its reputation for superb customer service by selecting
people to work for him that were deeply dedicated to the cause. He also took the time to train

them well so that they not only knew how to treat the customers well, but they too felt cared for.
Chick-fil-A has the operators visit headquarters from time to time. And each year they
invite them to a five-day business seminar at a five-star resort at the company’s expense. That’s
where Cathy sets sales goals for the year and plans ways to help his employees to become more
successful, not just in the business but also in their home life and other responsibilities they have.
Cathy believes if an operator doesn't take responsibility for his family and he loses his family,
he’s not going to be able to make money. There are many things more important than money.
Cathy thinks that one of the worst things the company can hear about an operator is that he’s
getting divorced from his wife and family. We can’t expect him to do his best at work if he’s got
problems at home (Oches, 1997)
I believe the core values that Cathy has as a christian and how he treats his employees is
not only following God, but is a great marketing tool. People will remember when they are
treated well and will be more likely to be a repeat customer. Chick-fil-A is known for being
methodical about opening new restaurants. They not only are careful not to open a store that
would be in direct competition with another existing store, but enjoy opening them with fanfare,
including giving the first hundred customers free chicken sandwiches for a year. The free offer
has led crowds to gather for a new opening, with many camping out to get in line. Openings
often include prayer. (McWhirter, 2012) I find the free chicken sandwiches as a superb marketing
ploy and that despite what some people would say he maintains his character and is not afraid to
have public prayer. He actually attracts customers who support his core values.
In the New Living Translation of the Bible Titus 2:7-8 says, “ And you yourself must be
an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the

integrity and seriousness of your teaching. Teach the truth so that your teaching can’t be
criticized. Then those who oppose us will be ashamed and have nothing bad to say about us.
Truett Cathy started out his business teaching young teenagers not only the chicken
business, but the business of life and integrity and character. Cathy states as the final step in his
Five-Step recipe for Business Success "I was not so committed to financial success that I was
willing to abandon my principles and priorities. One of the most visible examples of this is our
decision to close on Sunday. Our decision to close on Sunday was our way of honoring God and
of directing our attention to things that mattered more than our business."(Chick-fil-A. (n.d.))
Despite Chick-fil-A being closed on Sundays, the business has been massively successful
by earning more per store than any other restaurant. A lot more. In fact, the average Chick-fil-A
unit made around $4,090,900 in 2017. By contrast, the total sales for a McDonald’s ($2,670,320
per unit), Starbucks ($945,270) and Subway ($416,860) is $4,032,450. That’s crazy -- especially
since Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays.(McCreary, 2018)
Cathy ran his big business like a small business. He said that meant taking care of the
little things and not losing sight of what made you successful. To me, that means you can’t set
your goals too high. Set them high, but be reasonable.
The company works hard to stabilize the management end of their business. They have
only a 5 to 6 percent turnover rate among operators, which is unheard of in this segment of the
industry. Operators want Chick-fil-A to be successful is because they’re going to get 50 percent
of the profits. It’s a good arrangement because it gets everyone working together, creating
dividends.
Chick-fil-A’s mission statement is a challenge to “Be America’s best quick-service
Felicia Bauder
Busi 520 Marketing and Management

Page 10
restaurant at satisfying every customer.” To do that, they tell their people, “Treat your customers
like you like to be treated when you eat out.” You’d like to be greeted with a bunch of smiling
faces and a serving spirit. You’d want someone to help you through menu selection so that you
choose something you’ll enjoy. This suggestive selling only benefits the company by helping the
customer to be aware of their options. And you’d want to be charged a reasonable price and have
a nice, clean table to sit at. Before you leave, you’d want someone to come over and speak to
you, make sure you had a good experience, that you plan to come back. Those are some of the
things they encourage their people to do.
"The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in their Restaurants is to treat every person
with honor, dignity and respect –regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or
gender." (Chick-fil-A. (n.d.)) Now that’s good business.
