FAITH BASED MARKETING 3
Abstract
Faith based marketing is becoming more popular as many shoppers are putting their money into
companies that represent their values and morals. Companies like Chick-fil-a have performed
better than others by using faith driven marketing.
FAITH BASED MARKETING 4
Faith Based Marketing-Closed on Sunday
The bible scripture states, “And if you make a sale to your neighbor or buy from your
neighbor, you shall not wrong one another” (Leviticus 25:14). Character in business is necessary
and it is my belief that a business can succeed when a founder’s values, character, and morals
correlate with the businesses principles and foundation. Leviticus 25:14 talks about respecting
and honoring your customers. It’s about treating them as your equal and holding yourself to a
standard determined by your faith regardless of others perspective.
Discussion
Chick-fil-a, who has grown at an incredible rate since they first opened their doors in
1946 has taken Texas by storm. There are over 400 Chick-fil-a’s in Texas alone. They are leaders
in the fast food industry, ranking number one as America’s top fast food spot beating giant names
like Mc Donald’s, Burger King, and Taco Bell. S. Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-a once said,
“We change the world, and ourselves, by our response to unexpected opportunities.” (Bartnick,
L.) Cathy led a life centered on biblical principles from the very beginning before Chick-fil-a
was a reality. His business policies were a reflection of his faith and his Christian beliefs.
When he founded Chick-fil-A, Cathy made not working Sundays and only working 6
days a week, a mandatory company policy. Following the fourth commandment, “remember the
sabbath”. Even franchisees have to follow this stipulation as part of the franchise contract. Cathy
in a 1997 speech said, “I never intended to make a big issues out of being closed on Sunday” He
also said that the policy helped him and helped his employees “stay fresh in the body and soul,
and thus it ultimately rebounds to the company benefits.” There is a caring element to his
business model and marketing. A factor that people need to take a day of rest. A day to recharge
not only body but mind and spirit as well. Sunday is a day to rejoice with family and God.
When you visit a Chick-fil-a it doesn’t take long to see the “people/customers first” The
service is a personable experience. From the moment you place your order to the moment its
ready, it is all about the experience. For example, when taking your order, they take your name
because a customer is more than an order number. Their marketing is based on a people first
principle. No wonder they were voted number one in customer service. When I read Cathy’s
biography, it was clear that he lived by verses of the scripture.
