Introduction/ Definition
A major concept as discussed from the article is Building Trust, which articulates the need to
work together as a team and achieve common goals and objectives. In teams or rather
organizations, building trust means coming together as a team and creating a trust based on the
activities and exercises. With the fact that teams are comprised of diverse people, building trust
might be challenging. Most of the teams today are built on trust amongst the members and
failure of that leads to the failing of the team, and therefore it would be impossible to achieve the
goas or mission of the organization. Therefore, building trust amongst members can be
considered as a factor for success (Wizard, 2010).
Summary
In reference to Ilgen, Hollenbeck, Johnson, & Jundt, 2005, the article is primarily based on
building trust across a given group. This is mainly aimed at achieving a certain goal or objective.
According to the article, trust can develop in different cultures. However, in order for a team to
succeed, the members should be willing to trust and believe that the team is competent to
complete tasks. Trust is built on past experiences, noting the motives of others, as well as be able
to believe in others. Basically, when there is trust among the members, it is possible to enhance
communication, and conflicts are difficult to be witnessed in organizations. Through social
interactions, people are able to develop trust amongst them and as a result, they might think of
doing something constructive. Indeed, when people trust one another, they are able to help one
another and share information on how they can work together to achieve a common objective. It
is important to understand that building trust is based on two types of behaviors, that is, trusting
and trustworthiness. Without such behaviors, it would be impossible to create a team in which
the members are able to trust one another. Trust can quickly be destroyed by a single incident.
Thus, it is important to ensure that in a team, what we do is often appreciated by others. In
addition, it is important to ensure that when trust is built, team members can use effective ways
to build trust among the members again.
Discussion
In relation to the article’s point and the textbook, the concept has widely been discussed. Virtual
team has been widely used today online (Shinnishi & Higa, 2018). Even though we interact with
people who are not near us, without trust it is likely that will not happen. This is a major
consideration today and especially whereby there is increased technology. Communication is one
of the major factors to consider in virtual teams. When there is communication amongst the
parties involved, it is indeed a good move in enhancing trust amongst the teams. People usually
come together for a number of reasons. I have witnessed different teams prosper because of the
trust they have towards one another.
• As a leader of your team, what are the major considerations to improve trust amongst the
team?
• Does your personal competence encourage trust amongst people?
• What are the organizational or professional shared values and culture?
In conclusion, building trust is always essential for the achievement of goals and objectives
within a team (Karlgaard, 2014).
