Critical appraisal is the process of assessing research for reliability, importance, and
significance. It is used in all evidence-based practice research to identify valuable information to
improve a patient outcome. “A critique is a critical appraisal process that evaluates the content of
a research report for scientific validity and application to the practice setting” (Hall, Roussel,
p.125).
During this process the areas to be evaluated are the problem statement, research methodology,
results, conclusions and interpretations. There is a difference in the way this process is addressed
in both quantitative and qualitative but they have the same goal. “Qualitative reviews differ from
their quantitative counterparts in that they aim to present a comprehensive understanding of
participant experiences and perceptions, rather than assess the effectiveness of an intervention”
(Butler, Hall, Copnell, 2016, p.241).
I will talk about qualitative. The qualitative critical appraisal process is used by clinicians to
make the best decisions for the practice. Within this step, the best evidence must be identified.
According to Hall and Roussel (2017), “Appraisal of the evidence is important to ensure that the
best field information is being applied in an economic, holistic, and efficient manner” (p.129).
According to Dixon-Woods, Bonas, Booth Jones, Miller, Sutton and Young (2016),
“Assessment of the quality of qualitative papers has therefore traditionally relied on more
detailed appraisals, sometimes using checklist-type approaches” (p.35). A critical appraisal tool
used with qualitative research is a CASP or a qualitative checklist that should provide value.
This is a checklist of questions that one can go through to see if the results of a study are
appropriate, accurate or reliable to incorporate within their practice.
In a healthcare setting is it always important for the physician to provide accurate information
when treating patients. Just as in Mark 5:25-26 And there was a woman who had had a discharge
of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all

that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. Even though we know who the true
physician was in this parable. It makes you think. Doctors sometimes don’t have all the answers
but they should do their research. Just as another article I was reading where physicians wanted
to see if physical or body movements could treat a certain health issue versus always giving
medication for it. For example, migraines were studied within a certain age group with HBP and
found that if they did yoga combined with massage therapy, migraines would go away. Because
anyone can write research paper does not mean that its true. This is why critical appraisal is
important.
