A company's 25th anniversary celebration 3
Introduction
A project has certain vital attributes that define whether it is a project or an ongoing
activity. These attributes include being unique in nature, having a definite start and end date, and
having measurable completion criteria (Watt, 2014, Chapter 2: Project Management Overview).
Communication is stated as one of the number one interpersonal skill needed to effectively
manage a project (Watt, 2014, Chapter 2: Project Management Overview). Throughout the week
members of group 2 collaborated and narrowed down which project the team would focus on
throughout the term. Through clear communication with members of group 2 the process of
selecting the final project topic ultimately resulted in choosing the option for planning a
company’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. The final topic selection, planning a 25th anniversary
celebration, allows group 2 to thoroughly and effectively apply their knowledge and skills to
tackle the constraints presented to lead the project to success.
Potential Projects
The group was presented with a list of potential projects to choose from. The decision
was made to select the 3 final topics using the SMART goal approach. The 3 projects made the
“short list” based upon the team members knowledge of construction, party planning and
restoration of classic cars. Each team member had some experience in each of the 3 topics.
According to Haughey (2016), “Goals should be SMART - specific, measurable, agreed upon,
realistic and time-based.”

Group 2 also selected the final topic by using the “SMART” goals approach by taking
into consideration the following:
•Specific
•Measurable
•Attainable
•Relevant
•Time-based
Group 2 selected “A company's 25th anniversary celebration” as the final topic. The group
determined the project was realistic as the project can be measured from start to finish.
Project Selection-Single Project Explanation. To be successful on a project as a project
manager or team member, it is essential to have some form of expertise in certain areas.
Application of knowledge, understanding the project environment, management knowledge and
skills, and interpersonal skills such as clear communication, leadership abilities, and motivation
are all examples of what a person in a project management role needs to possess (Watt, 2014,
Chapter 2: Project Management Overview). Additionally, projects consist of constraints that
need to be balanced and managed accordingly to ensure success: Cost, Scope, Quality, Risk,
Resources, and Time (Watt, 2014, Chapter 2: Project Management Overview). Group 2
determined that planning a company’s 25th anniversary celebration would enable them to
successfully work as a team through the project by having personal experience in the project
environment and having members of the team with management skills and knowledge.
Additionally, group 2 was able to start clearly identifying key topics of discussion that will need
to be included in the planning phase of the celebration such as selecting the venue location, food
options, music, beverages, and coordinating engaging activities (i.e. 50/50 raffle). Group 2 also

effectively to all participants.

Goals, Benefits, And Success Criteria. Anniversary celebrations are often a business
objective for increasing visibility, attracting media attention and to encourage networking
amongst leadership and staff. ("How to celebrate your company's anniversary," n.d.). It is
recommended that when determining the project objectives, the SMART rule approach should be
adhered to. If these rules and principles are followed, the objectives will meet the quantifiable
criteria needed to measure success. (Watt, 2014, Chapter 8: Overview of Project Planning).
The 25th anniversary is a great time to also celebrate its achievements, employees, and customers
during this time. This is a value-added project to the business in many ways. “Projects enable
business value creation. PMI defines business value as the net quantifiable benefit derived from a
business endeavor. The benefit may be tangible, intangible, or both. In business analysis,
business value is considered the return, in the form of elements such as time, money, goods, or
intangibles in return for something exchanged (see Business Analysis for Practitioners: A
Practice Guide, p. 185 [7]). Business value in projects refers to the benefit that the results of a
specific project provide to its stakeholders. The benefit from projects may be tangible, intangible,
or both.” (Project Management Institute., 2017).
The benefits of the anniversary festivities go beyond the pleasure of just the party itself.
("How to celebrate your company's anniversary," n.d.). A strategically planned anniversary
celebration can deepen bonds within a community, its customers, and staff to inspire deeper
engagement. It can shift internal focus from problems to achievements, reinforce the culture,
mission, and values. ("How to celebrate your company's anniversary," n.d.).
For the 25th Anniversary Celebration Group 2 has specified goals throughout the project
they would like to accomplish. To name a few; one goal is to select the venue/location where the

25th anniversary will be held within the first 10 days of project initiation. Additionally, the group
will determine the cuisine style that will be used from options such as BBQ catering, 5 course
meal catering, seafood, etc. by no later than 5 days into project initiation. To expand, the project
group will assign a lead point of contact to reach out to catering companies to gauge availability
and price of food and compare prices and services offered by 14 days into project initiation.
Another major goal to be accomplished is to plan activities and prizes to encourage attendance
and personnel engagement at the celebration by a month into the project.
Summary. Group 2 cohesively worked together as a team and selected the term topic, “A
Company’s 25th Anniversary Celebration.” The “SMART” goals approach was utilized to
determine the basis for the topic selection. According to Haughey (2016), “Goals should be
SMART - specific, measurable, agreed upon, realistic and time-based.” Group 2 identified the
processes, goals and objectives that needs to be executed to successfully execute each phase of
the event planning (Watt, 2014, Chapter 2: Project Management Overview). Watt (2014), states
that, “a project is completed when its goals and objectives are accomplished.”
