Running head: DISCUSSION BOARD 3
There are three concepts outlines by Satterlee (2018) that can be described as being
essential in the workplace. Embracing these traits gives an individual the opportunities to
understand and experience all dynamics of the workplace. Listening adds dimension to
relationships, specifically in the workplace and the relationships between leaders and their
subordinates. Also, an understanding of an individual’s basic needs allows leaders to empathize
and sympathize with their employees and co-workers. Finally, collaboration gives each member
of a team to offer ideas and solutions so that everyone is involved in creating a solution and
benefiting everyone in the group.
Three Concepts
Listening
Listening is crucial to successful relationships within the workplace (Satterlee, 2018).
Satterlee (2018) defines listening as to hear what others are saying. Although there are many
different forms of communication, listing is one of the most overlooked because individuals
often listen to respond instead of listening to hear. There are a total of five components to proper
listening techniques (Satterlee, 2018). Component one is paying attention and being engaged
(Satterlee, 2018). The Second component is perform active listening by responding to what you
are hearing with body language, looking at the individual that is speaking, making eye contact,
and responding with appropriate (Satterlee, 2018). The third component is providing feedback by
asking questions (Satterlee, 2018). Fourth component of listening is holding judgement until the
entire conversation has been heard (Satterlee, 2018). The fifth component of listening is
responding appropriately by being nonjudgmental, authentic, and humble (Satterlee, 2018).

Listening is considered to be on the top skills that is required among employers because it
is crucial to comprehending and accomplishing tasks (Lear, 2015). Often, someone listening can
be a key component to problem solving, as listening allows for proper analyzation of the
situation by listening to all the input provided (Lear, 2015). Also, listening skills that are
combined with empathy is linked to higher levels of trust within relationships (Lear, 2015).
Individuals Basic Needs
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs describes the fulfillment of basic human needs can result in
the obtainment and maintaining of employee satisfaction (Madan, 2017). When the social and
self-esteem needs of an employee are satisfied, the result of this satisfaction will be committed
employees (Madan, 2017). Safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization needs are the basic needs
that all individuals strive to fulfill (Madan, 2017). Needs such as safety provide benefits not just
for the employee but for the organization, focusing on these needs managers focus on the well-
being, health, and safety of the employee, and also the career advancement of the employee
(Madan, 2017). Social needs refer to the feedback that is received from the leadership of the
team, mentoring needs, teamwork, and open lines of communication within the workplace
(Madan, 2017). Esteem needs are boosting the employee’s morale and focusing on making the
employee feel that they are part of a winning team (Madan, 2017). Finally, self-actualization
needs are fulfilled by producing meaningful work, the employee being highly motivated and
having a desire for achievement and advancement (Madan, 2017). All of these needs combined
when fulfilled create successful teams within in organization that strive for results and overall
wins for the organization as a whole instead of just wins for the individual.

In order the be successful and organization must maintain a level of focused performance.
One of the key factors to this is through increasing employee engagement by knowing the
individual, basic, and human needs of the organization’s members (Madan, 2017). Pay and
benefits are great ways to attract individuals to a job, but making the employee feel like part of a
team and allowing them to strive for results and feel appreciated is what creates long lasting and
successful employees. Individuals need to feel appreciated within their workplace, and that their
contributions are making a difference.
Collaboration
Collaboration is the key to successful results no matter what the situation (Boynton,
2012). Boynton (2012) describes ways to encourage collaboration including, listening to each
individual’s needs, regular meetings, and resolving and issues that arise. The same types of
encouragement and conflict management are also beneficial for team building (Boynton, 2012).
Additionally, this is used to create healthy work environments, build trust among team members,
and create healthy and lasting relationships (Boynton, 2012). Collaboration is a leadership style
that promotes employee involvement to meet the organizations goals, and creates success for
everyone involved (Boynton, 2012).
Conclusion
These three concepts combined can create success for the entire organization. Listening
to each member of the organization, fulfilling their needs, and collaborating as a team is what
creates success for an entire organization. One person cannot keep an organization running, it

takes a team and this team must be working together to create success for everyone and not just
for each individual member.
