Third Time
When we look at how we can perform social research and other kinds of research, there are
multiple ways to achieve it and get results. When you are deciding the ways to conduct your
research needs to be based on what you are researching and the kinds of things you need to have
for the best outcomes. There may be times when you want to do research; it needs to be
performed a certain way to achieve results. Ultimately when you are in the position to do
research, it is always helpful to look over the many different styles of research there are and pick
the best option for the results you want to achieve.
The research method of positivism is when a practicing empirical science approach is used.
Positivism research is when research is from a person's direct knowledge. Direct knowledge are
the things that a researcher has gone through, heard, seen or even felt; this is derived from cause
and effect. This also has absolutes in its research. The information has been proven in scientific
ways. The what if and could that happen is eliminated in positivism research.
When taking into consideration all sides of a problem or issue, it is a post-positivism
approach (Robson & McCartan, 2016). Positivism and post-positivism could be described as
opposites approaches. Post-positivism differs in not turning to scientific proof but more to a
common sense approach. There is not much proof in the theory that may be proposed. There are
ways to use quantitative research to form a theory and what needs to be researched to fit a
narrative. One of the leading reasons for post-positivism research is that it can provide scientific
results, but instead, it brings forth theories and guesses at results (Turyahikayo, 2021).
The research method of constructivism can be seen as nature vs nurture. This is the theory
that an environment can be the reasoning behind something, and that influence can be transferred
into the research. When a researcher has had an experience in something that they are
researching, such as what they have seen in life, perceptions and beliefs have an effect. When
the research is done in society, there are factors of a social dimension (Robson & McCartan,
2016). This type of research is good for new theories and concepts that have no dependence on
science. The new aspect can help with the bias that can happen in research.
A practical method of research is the pragmatism method. When you look at things or a
subject from all sides, it is the pragmatism method of research. This method takes all things or
people involved into consideration in the results. It looks at the impact it could have and then
finds the best fit to find results. When doing this kind of research can create new paths to
answers. Pragmatism is looking at how people act and what their perspective is. This sometimes
leads to an empathic why (Heinonen & Strandvik, 2022).
When we look at the Bible and what it says about research, we can see there is a way to be
faithful in doing it. There are multiple examples of people doing research. "But it was to us that
God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us
God's deep secrets" (1 Corinthians 2:10, New Living Translation). We are not sure what is doing
the searching, but it is fruitful to God to do so. When reading, "I think of the good old days, long
since ended, when my nights were filled with joyful songs. I search my soul and ponder the
difference now (Psalm 77:5-6, New Living Translation) and "It is God's privilege to conceal
things and the king's privilege to discover them" (Proverbs 25:2, New Living Translation); the
Bible talks about searching and discovering things. This is not referring to just simple things.
God wants us to be profoundly searching out the answers to our questions and discover the right
answers. These are forms of research.
Overall, there are lots of research approaches to be considered in an educational,
professional and personal environment. We see how it fits in an educational and professional in
our studies and textbooks. We can also turn to the Bible to see how what kind of research we
need to do in our personal life. That research can also spill over into our educational and
professional life areas.

Janita Jackson Christianity
Janita, I enjoyed reading your post. I really liked your thoughts on how Christianity fits into the
different research methods. Your point of positivism compared to Christian belief in objective
truth made me think about how it is a person's direct knowledge. There are many accounts in the
bible of a person's direct knowledge of God. We can see that kind of knowledge in Luke 1:26-38.
God provided an angel, Gabriel, to Mary to give her the news of the coming of Christ. This is her
first-hand knowledge of a positivism method. When the positivism method is used, it is the
things that can be researched via one's own experiences (Robson & McCartan, 2019). This
approach, when looking at Christianity, can be helpful because it comes from a passion for
getting that knowledge from someone the completely trust and rely on (Ryan, 2018). I think the
method of constructivism would be a good one to use to measure growth in a church. When the
nature vs nurture approach is used, you could look at how many times after a person's first visit if
they come back and remain at the church (Jakobsen et al., 2019). Looking at what things are
done to connect to that first time visitor compared to those that there was not connected with,
keep attending. There are so many ways to approach church growth, and knowing all the ways
research can be conducted is helpful in getting the best results to move the commission of God
forward.

Thomas, I enjoyed reading your post. Your thoughts in how to approach hiring was insightful. I
think one thing that needs to be looked at in hiring is the high turnover currently in the
workplace, I see it every day when wait times are longer to talk to someone at the bank to
restaurants not able to open their dining rooms and just have to deal with the drive though sales
because there is not enough staff. There is no workplace that has not suffered in the last few
years. When we look at the employment rate, something is not adding up. The state of Minnesota
has had the lowest rate ever recorded in the state for unemployment (MN State Employment and
Unemployment, 2022). However, organizations everywhere are suffering to keep staff. Staff
turnover can be one of the issues with organizations staying fully staffed. In one study I read,
there was a field that turned to mentors to keep their staff. They found having that relationship
was a deterrent to the staff leaving over time (Yang et al., 2019). Another article I read discussed
how organizations need to keep their staff feeling needed but, more importantly, wanted (Gandhi
et al., 2021). If organizations are just looking at their staff as a number and not a human, they
will not be successful in keeping them in the long term. When I read, "Remind the believers to
submit to the government and its officers. They should be obedient, always ready to do what is
good" (Titus 3:1, New Living Translation) it makes me think about how we should be loyal to
our employers. When we are thinking about leaving a job, we should try to seek out ways to
make things better before just jumping ship.

There are many approaches to carrying out social research and a in research, there are
many different ways to do it and get results from it. What you are researching should dictate the
way the research that needs to be done to get the best outcome. Sometimes the research itself can
only be performed in one way to get results. Overall, when you are ready to do research, it is
helpful to look at the different styles and choose the best option.
Positivism is practicing empirical science. Positivism is when what you are researching is
from one's own direct knowledge. It is the thing that you have gone through, heard, seen or even
felt. It is cause and effect. It is also something that has absolutes. Its information has been proven
in scientific ways. Positivism can also be also be looked at as something that eliminates the what
if and could that happen scenarios.
Post‐positivism takes into consideration all sides of an issue or problem (Robson &
McCartan, 2016). Post-positivism can be looked at as the opposite in many ways of positivism. It
will lean on common sense over scientific proof. There is not much proof in the theory that may
be proposed. There are ways to use quantitative research to form a theory and what needs to be
researched to fit a narrative. One of the leading reasons for post-positivism research is that it can
provide scientific results, but instead, it brings forth theories and guesses at results (Turyahikayo,
2021).
Constructivism research can be seen as nature vs nurture. It is how the environment can
influence the research and how it is conducted. The researchers can be skewed by what
experiences one has had, what they have seen in life, perceptions and beliefs. When the research
is done in society, there are factors of a social dimension (Robson & McCartan, 2016). This kind
of research is typically looking at new concepts and theories without depending on old research
and science.
Pragmatism research can be viewed as a practical method. It is looking at things from all
sides of the issue. It takes into consideration of all things or people involved. It looks at the
impact it could have and then finds the best fit to find results. This way of research can create
new ways of finding answers. Pragmatism is looking at how people act and what their
perspective is. This sometimes leads to an empathic why (Heinonen & Strandvik, 2022).
When we look at these different ways of doing research, we can see that there are
definitely different types of research for different scenarios. A situation where one would what to
research how to create a new drug to cure a disease or help with an ailment, there needs to be a
scientific approach involved with that. When you are looking at why a certain population is
lacking, you may want to research it in a way where many factors are taken into consideration.
There could be some scientific research to be done, but all sides of the issue need to be taken into
consideration to do the best research to end up with the best data, in the end, to enact change
possibly.
When we look at the Bible and what it says about research, we can see there is a way to be
faithful in doing it. There are multiple examples of people doing research. "But it was to us that
God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us

Destiny, I enjoyed reading your post. You brought up brainstorming in your post. I love a well
put together brainstorming group. When you bring together a group of people with different
backgrounds and experiences, you will end up with perspectives you would have never seen or
thought of before. One article I read in my research brought up the idea of convergence in
groups. It is one of the patterns of collaboration. It has been characterized as generation,
convergence, organization, evaluation, and building commitment (Seeber et al., 2018). This
could be a way of brainstorming with an established structure from the beginning and having an
established system when brainstorming can be a significant help in getting more information out
of it. Going back to brainstorming with a group, the perspective of many is a big help. I know for
myself because I am Deaf, and I have a very unique perspective. I see things that many others do
not see. When we are looking to research for things that affect many, we want to make sure we
are looking at them from all angles. Having all sides taken into consideration will lead to better
outcomes in the end (Raimann et al., 2020). When we look to the Bible, "Two people are better
off than one, for they can help each other succeed" (Ecclesiastes 4:9, New Living Translation),
we see where having more than one person looking at something can lead to good things. This is
also seen "as iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend (Proverbs 27:17, New Living
Translation). There are so many benefits to brainstorming with others.

Trudy Beerman
Trudy, I enjoyed reading your post. You brought up how research could and should
happen when looking at church growth. I agree there are simple, measurable methods to look at.
There are also things like a post-positivism approach when looking at church growth. When
things are looked at from the staff, parishioners, visitors and those that work and live in the
neighborhood perspectives, we can make sure things are not missed concerning the growth of the
church. Having all sides taken into consideration will lead to better outcomes in the end
(Raimann et al., 2020). The collaboration of these participants can help with the growth of the
church. It has been characterized as generation, convergence, organization, evaluation, and
building commitment (Seeber et al., 2018). Two people are better off than one, for they can help
each other succeed" (Ecclesiastes 4:9, New Living Translation). When all are taken into
consideration and asked to be involved in their growth, it can have an effect that is bigger than
just one.
One other perspective way of research I would maybe avoid would be constructivism.
The past ways staff of a church have experienced or helped in the growth of a church can
become their only thought process of how church growth can happen. It would be helpful to find
out what ways were helpful and not successful for them in the past. These things can be avoided
or expanded upon to make growth successful. The individual can be helpful in providing
information but should not be the one relied on for the research for a good outcome.
