ORGANIZATIONS PERSPECTIVES 2
Technical and Social Perspectives of Organizations
The technical definition of an organization involves the inclusion of the various units of an
organization. According to a technical perspective organizations involve various people who work
together for a certain purpose, following certain processes while performing certain functions. The
shared objectives among the members result to members interacting in functional ways.
The social definition focuses on the formal part. While most of the technical definitions often
focuses on formal interactions and structure or achieve objectives, social aspect correlates with
informal organization characteristics. It involves the non-formal means of communication and
interactions among the employees with every one forming the sense of ownership and belonging
to the workplace relationship. The social interactions in such situations happen when the business
interactions are apparent, but usually it takes place when employees are involved in lunch break.
The social definition usually comprises of the fact that an organization is made up of several
participants which work together to share ideas and to come up with communities of practice.
People are social being and they are involved in the interactions with other people in the
organization to achieve the necessary goals.
In technical terms, an organization is usually comprised of the tools and resources which work
together and which are used to achieve a specific goal in an organization. For instance, an
organization can have an information system which is comprised of several units that are combined
to work together to facilitate an easy dissemination of information among the various bodies of an
organization. The technical aspect are crucial because they are the backbone of an organization.
They provide the ability to share information, to communicate and to interpolate easily with the
other units and subsystems in an organization. They are the building blocks that facilitate the ability
of combining processes and people in achieving the desired goals.
ORGANIZATIONS PERSPECTIVES 3
Rational, Open and Natural Systems
The study of organizations can be viewed in perspective of natural, rational and open
systems. Rational systems focus on the formal structures which are used as acute tools for effective
realization of certain organizational goals (Őnday, 2018). It involves formalized structures which
offer the participants in an organization with explicit roles and rules relations which manage their
associated interactional behavior in the organization. In relation to the social perspective of an
organization, rational approach involves the normative structure such as norms, role and values
expectations formulate the social cement. Such a concept of rational systems encourages
productive inter-individual participation and formation of social structures which help in achieving
the overall organizational goals. The rational system approach concentrates on formal structures
associated with organization while seeing an organization as being made up of people who work
together to get certain foals accomplished.
Natural system on the other relates to the organization structures and perspectives. Instead
of focusing on the formal structures of organizations as in the case of the rational systems, natural
systems focuses on the informal structures. It checks on the complexity of goals which formulate
the associated social cement for binding interactions among the informal groups in an organization.
Understanding such an informal influence on the behavior of participants is an important factor in
explaining social aspect of organizations. A natural system approach expounds on the idea that
interpersonal and informal structures in an organization constitute the most important part than the
formal structures. The workforce or people in an organization usually have different interests,
conflictual and consensus-building processes which drive organizational action.
Open systems contribute to organizational behavior by suggesting on the environment
which surrounds an organization. Open systems theory argues that there are external factors and
ORGANIZATIONS PERSPECTIVES 4
environmental factors which affect an organization and such factors should be considered for an
organization to survive. Hence, an organization would have to observe, adjust and adapt their
behavior in conjunction to the dynamic environment. An open system usually comprises of the
system with external interactions. The interactions may take the form of energy, material or
information with the system boundaries. Systems may vary depending on the environment they
are in. Organizations are example of open systems that exchange resources and information with
the associated environment. Their behavior are not completely controlled by the system but get
influenced by the external forces. For instance, an organization may be affected with
environmental conditions like raw material availability, government regulations and customer
demands.
A manufacturing industry for the electronics will need the ability to access raw materials
like silicon. When such materials are lacking, they the manufacturing function of that organization
will retard. Customer demands are also important in influencing most organizations. When the
demand for certain materials and products exist, then the market and product value of that
organization will increase. However, most organizations are not able to control the customer
demands but they are under the influence and control of the customer demands for them to flourish.
The government regulations are influential in setting the operational standards and in setting
policies which would affect how an organization is performing. The government policies can cause
an organization to change its way of doing things and to focus itself in meeting the expectations
of the government. Organizations do not have full control over the government policies and
therefore they should be prepared in such situations. Organizations need to ensure that such
regulatory policies are obeyed to prevent the harmful effect of that external environment such as
fines when the policies are violated. In terms of permeability, organizations have more permeable
ORGANIZATIONS PERSPECTIVES 5
boundaries. Regular taking of feedback is essential in ensuring that the organization has the
required performance and coordination of the boundaries that it influences.
In the defining of organization, three debates exist. One debate concerns on whether work
efficiency is the main determinant of an organizational structure and performance. Some maintain
the fact that persistence and prosperity is achieved in organizations that are more efficient.
However, others perceive that an organization may succeed through other strategies like great
legitimacy and alliance among powerful actors. Another debate argues that the degree of an
organization to co-opt and change their environment is the defining aspect of an organizational
culture. When considering such a perspective, an organization is assessed on whether it is
adaptable to changing environment or the environment is malleable. The last debates argues on the
basis of whether an organization is able to be flexible and adaptable when faced with changes in
the environment. In such a debate, organizations are seen to have managers who demonstrate the
capacity of an organization to change whenever they face challenges while others find it difficult
to perform a successful change.
Technology Areas
Technological areas that relate to the use of information systems to manage operations in
an organization is one of the issues for participants. Some of the baby boomers find it difficult to
adapt to new information technology systems. Some prefer the traditional way of doing things
which involve pen and paper (Canedo et al., 2017). Hence, there is a complexity in the adaptation
of the automated IT systems such as enterprise resource planning systems and block chain in the
management of organizational operations. On the other hand, the millennials are very
knowledgeable with technology and the digital era. Such a disparity among the participants in an
ORGANIZATIONS PERSPECTIVES 6
organization from different generations result to collisions and lack of proper collaboration in
achieving the overall organizational goals.
Organizations require the use of information technology in order to manage the information
flow in an organizations. The current world of businesses have those organizations which use
information technology as the ones who are more prone to maintain a competitive advantage.
Those organizations that do not make good use of information technology are seen as being
incompetent and prone to loss a competitive advantage. Information technology areas like the use
of enterprise resource planning systems, e-commerce, and cloud computing and storage, and
management information systems are essential in promoting the capacity of organization to
manage information and content in an organization. As a result, they contribute to the overall
performance of an organization and efficient processing of operations. Hence, they are currently
influential determinant of the business success of an organization.
However, it is apparent that most workforce are hesitant in accepting technology. Such a
situation has resulted to productivity paradox where the implementation of technology does not
result to much efficiency but results to retarded efficiency. Some employees lack the ability to
assimilate new concepts of technology. It is also apparent that the risk of information security
compromise is high as a result of the people in the organization not complying with acceptable use
policy. Some are ignorant of the risky behaviors that can result to the exposure of an organization
to outside threats. For instance, social engineering has been a big issue of information security.
The people within an organization are the ones which contribute to the lack of sensitive
information to the non-authorized users. Hence, hackers take the chance to comprise such
information systems. In such a case, information technology is seen as a risky investment when it
possess a danger to the security of the information in the organization. Hackers are also adapting
ORGANIZATIONS PERSPECTIVES 7
faster to technology than the rate at which employees are adapting to new technologies. Hence, the
bad people are of much edge than the people who are within the organization. Hence, information
technology associated with the use of information systems is one of the most challenging aspect
of an organization.
If proper training can be done on the use of information technology, then an organization
will not have a challenge in the implementation and leverage of technology to achieve its goals.
Instead, it will find it a very resourceful tool in promoting the agendas and management of
information which results to more efficiency.
Organizational Boundaries
Organizational boundaries are what different one organization from another one that offers
similar values and achieve similar objectives (Schmidthuber & Hilgers, 2018). The distinguishing
aspect on how such specifications and definition of boundaries is what is of challenge. Hence,
taking such into concern, there is the normality and realist approaches used to make the
distinctions. The normality perspectives adopts the conceptual perspective that identify the
boundaries which would be relevant to an organization.
Organizational boundaries usually consisted of those elements that affect the organization
but are external. For instance, the government’s policy and regulatory frameworks usually
influence an organization. However, an organization has a little capacity and influence in
managing such regulations. Thus, organizations play the role of adjusting to the regulatory aspects
that are imposed by the government. Failure to such may result to penalties or losses in the
organization. For example, organizations are required to perform auditing on its operations.
Government agencies may also participate in the assessment of an organization through auditing.
ORGANIZATIONS PERSPECTIVES 8
Regulatory frameworks and policies like the HIPAA require that organization keep the information
of their clients secure enough to prevent the compromise of the confidentiality of information.
Organizations are required to stick to such regulatory requirements for them to survive.
The consciousness of an organization towards the surrounding environment is necessary in
supporting the capacity of an organization to adapt to changes in the environment. It is a crucial
factor in determining the success of an organization. When an organization is able to adapt to
organizational boundaries, it is capable to withstand the challenges that emerge as a result of the
influencers of an organization. It is also necessary to determine the boundaries which are of much
influence to an organization in order to concentrate efforts within such boundaries and to manage
scope of operations.
Personal perspectives
The personal perspectives in an organization cannot be ignored. Some members in an
organization view certain ways as being effective than the others. Even though there are various
concepts that include formal structures and roles expectations, there are individual perspectives
that bring about disparity in behavior among the members in an organization. The understanding
of the individual influences is crucial for the achievement of the individual contribution to the
overall realization of organizational goals. Based on personal perspective, it is recommendable
that organizations should treat their structures as a system where every component affects the
whole system (Hu & Syed, 2019). Such an approach encourages system thinking and helps to
address the root causes of problems in organizations.
Personal perspective is very important in promoting the capacity of being autonomous. It
is essential for every individual in the organization to be given the chance of participating in the
ORGANIZATIONS PERSPECTIVES 9
decision making process of an organization. Such a participation requires the individual to have
the ability of expressing him or herself so that the they can share their ideas on how to improve on
processes and help the organization make appropriate decisions concerning the development and
progress of the organization.
