Realities of My Time Management
For many, time management can be pretty straightforward but still rather complicated.
For me, time management is vastly different from the majority, which is because, at any time of
my day, I am not always aware of what I am doing or what is happening in my life. I have
dissociative identity disorder, also known as DID. DID is "Formerly known as multiple
personality disorder, this disorder is characterized by alternating between multiple identities"
(NAMI, n.d.). Also, to note that when someone has DID, they can "feel like one or more voices
are trying to take control in their head." (NAMI, n.d.). This makes scheduling my day a bit tricky
for me to plan out. I can be in the middle of homework and then suddenly be cooking or
watching a kid's movie. Every day I have what I call an internal meeting to set up what I need to
accomplish that day, but this is not foolproof. Being Deaf is an aspect that can put a wrench into
time management as it is related to school. I often go into the course on the first day of the
week's classes to check to make sure everything is accessible. Waiting until the due date before
beginning my work can be detrimental. For example, if I have to watch a video in order to
complete my assignment, it could set me back if the video is not accessible. Having two
disabilities is a separate undertaking and impacts my time management. However, I am fortunate
to be going to school and not have to work at the same time. Focusing on school without
factoring in a job makes getting and focusing on my assignments easier. I also have been dealing
with many medical things in the last year and even this week consisted of multiple doctor's
appointments. In the last year, I have been in school at Texas A&M in the President Bush School
of Government and Public Service. I am currently in my last course at Texas A&M while taking
two courses at Liberty University. In the last year, this semester is my first time taking classes

where I didn't need to put my time management skills into overdrive because of surgery. The
most stressful time for me has been these two weeks because I am taking three graduate school
courses simultaneously. In the last year, I have been taking one or two at a time and have been
very successful in those classes. I am expecting to graduate in five weeks from A&M with a 4.0.
I tell you all of this information about my past and where I am currently in life because I know
my spreadsheets will look very different from most of my classmates.
Takeaways
The things that stuck out to me looking at the time management spreadsheets were the
amount of time I spend dealing with medical things and that no matter where I have to go living
in the DFW area of Texas, it will take 35 minutes or more in commuting time. Also, I have
learned how to balance things in order to keep my life moving smoothly. I typically start the bulk
of my assignments at the beginning of the week, so I don't run into issues completing them. I
know I have accommodations for my schoolwork, but I never want to take advantage of them,
however, it is reassuring to know they are there if I truly need them. I am aware I have a
complicated life, but I am a very resourceful person and know what things I can handle. I also
know when I can push myself. For me to be successful in school and life, it is a balance of time
management and being resourceful.
