BMAL 501 DB Forum 6 Group Summary
We discussed many topics in Robert Dees’ Resilient Leaders throughout the course of
this class. Our group chose integrity, replenishment, followership, employee development, and
vision as the five most important topics discussed in Robert Dees’ Resilient Leaders, because all
of the topics that we chose relate best to organizational management and leadership.
Organizational Management and Leadership’s purpose is to identify and develop leadership and
management skills for an individual to thrive in an organizational environment. We believe that
these topics provide the blueprint to being a leader and manager for any organization. These
topics are key elements to any effective leader and/or manager because knowledge can’t be taken
away. Organizational management and leadership provide knowledge and shows you how to
apply that knowledge. We will then conclude with the three scriptures we have studied that
summed up the responsibilities of a leader.
Replenishment
Replenishment is an important term and action that a leader should put into the routine.
Replenishment is essentially relaxing your mind and body. In more simple terms, it is resting
physically and mentally. As a successful and great leader, one must understand the importance of
ensuring he or she is healthy both physically and mentally. A leader does not just lead by giving
commands or by putting policies into to place. They set an example for subordinates to follow.
When a leader is replenished in mind and body, he or she can take on any challenge that may
require quick attention to detail and judgement. Decision-making does not stop because a leader
does not feel rested for that day. A leader’s subordinates need that leader to perform at top
function in order to ensure that they are being cared for and that everything in the workplace is
up to standards. A few ways that a leader can help himself is by creating a balance between work

and home. Many times, especially with technology, it is easy for a leader to still have
communication with the office. This can be through text messages, emails, or even voice calls.
This makes it hard for a leader to relax and it makes hard for the family not to be interrupted.
Leaders need to take vacations, get adequate sleep, and make time spiritually in talking with the
Lord (Dees, 2013). Vacations are a way of relaxation to get out of the office environment for a
short time. Many leaders do not take vacations or take as much time as they can. The obligation
of being in a place all the time is what many leaders feel the need for. This is not good for a
leader because not taking time away and continually working long hours will drive them into
burnout mode. This is not productive for the leader, but instead it causes more inefficiency and
tiredness (Shattell, 2018). Making time for God is one of the most important things that we as
Christians should do. King David in the Book of Psalms acknowledged the presence of the Lord.
David also admitting when he did not do right and pleaded for forgiveness when he sinned.
Psalms is a great spiritual reflection to dwell upon and especially as a leader.
Integrity
Integrity management is concerned with systematically and completely reviewing,
analyzing and developing or safeguarding the ability of organizations to combat breaches of
integrity. Breaches of integrity occur where conflicting interests are incorrectly weighed against
each other, so that the actor infringes the legitimate interests of the company that employs him,
or of individuals and parties inside or outside the company. These breaches of integrity cause
enormous damage to the company itself, the employees and the external stakeholders. Breaches
of integrity undermine the competitive advantage of the companies concerned. It is the task of
the company's management to find a balance between the conflicting interests employees face
and to ensure that the balance is institutionalized. This article presents a conceptual framework
BMAL 501 DB FORUM 6 GROUP SUMMARY 4
for describing the integrity of organizations and provides a basis for developing specific
activities. According to Dees (2013), Integrity is “A seamless integration of faith, family, and
profession into a God-honoring life message.” Integrity is one of the top attributes of a great
leader and/or manager. It is a positive attribute for any individual to possess, but it is a required
attribute for great leaders. Integrity is displaying consistency of actions, values, methods,
measures, principles, expectations and outcomes. It is a deep commitment to do the right thing
for the right reason, regardless of the circumstances. Integrity defines what type of leader you are
and where you are leading or managing your followers. It requires that you do and say nothing
that deceives others. Possessing integrity gains the respect of followers and enables them to
believe in the message or directions the leader is trying to communicate to them. Proverbs 21:3
states, “to do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice” New
International Version. A true leader displays that he is true and just. Dees also states, “at the basic
level, integrity is simply telling the truth or staying true to a set of values” (Dees, 2013). Leaders
who live with integrity inspire their followers to adopt their own ideals, which makes them more
willing to support their vision.
Vision
As a leader you must look forward and see where you and the company are headed. This
is important in order to avert catastrophe before it happens, or to plan for increases in staffing,
production, etc. Vision helps a leader prepare for the future. Vision keeps a leader on course
during rocky times or unexpected setbacks. According to business coach Arman, having a plan
for success in your business is one of the most valuable things you can have, so don’t make the
mistake many business owners make by not having a business plan. Leaders need to keep the
result in mind. A leader’s vision needs to be strong enough to carry them through to the end.
BMAL 501 DB FORUM 6 GROUP SUMMARY 5
Otherwise they will stop short of their goals. If a leader has a strong vision, little setbacks and
obstacles will seem small and/or insignificant. They will work through them and persevere to the
end, learning as they go. Vision helps leaders to persevere. With all of life’s distractions, and
people vying for our attention nowadays, it can be hard to feel a sense of accomplishment. As a
leader, acting on your vision will provide you with the focus needed to accomplish your goals.
Vision helps leaders work on what is important to achieve the end results and not get caught up
in the mundane stuff. It helps leaders to focus on the 20% that is important instead of the
remaining 80% that can be delegated and handled by others. As a leader, it will help you to see
the result of your efforts. It will give you your “why?” and the reason that you are doing what
you do. “A leader has the vision and conviction that a dream can be achieved. He inspires the
power and energy to get it done” (Lauren, 2015).
Followership
In order to learn to become a great leader, you must be a great follower. Leaders must
be able to have been in a position that prepared them to take on the leader role. Very rarely does
one go straight into a leadership. Some of history’s greatest leaders got their start as followers
(Hyatt, 2019). More than likely they were at one point a follower. A leader must know how to be
a follower. Even leaders are at times a follower because they still do have a higher authority to
answer to, no matter where one ranks in the organizational chart. The skill of being a follower
begins with being humble and obedient. A great follower understands they have a leader that
oversees them. A great follower carries out the guidance and work that has been provided. They
do not disagree with their leader in front of their peers or speak negative about their leader. They
are loyal and will accomplish their responsibilities without complaining and put forth the best
effort in order to make their leader look outstanding (Hyatt, 2019). A great leader will take the
BMAL 501 DB FORUM 6 GROUP SUMMARY 6
time to develop reachable goals to achieve and will help to motivate their employees to meet
those goals. Leaders who have the personality traits of transparency and positive energy often
inspire their followers. This helps to fuel the drive of followers to become positive leaders in
their futures (Sharma, Agrawal, & Khandelwal, 2019). These followers that had been driven to
positive need to then carry this energy into another future generation of leaders through their
continued development.
Employee Development
The development of followers should start even before they are hired. When
looking for and hiring potential employees, we should be looking into the ways to develop these
individuals with their own uniqueness and how it can help add to the talent already within the
team. We must be looking to help these followers once they have been brought into the fold to
learn how to do things properly and explore new ways to do things. This can be done with the
help of human resources. Human resources development is a set of structured and unstructured
learning and performance-based activities which improve individual and organizational
competencies to address the changes in the business environment (Kareem & Hussein, 2019).
An organizational learning culture strengthens the relationships of team building and employee
empowerment on employee competencies (Potnuru, Sahoo, & Sharma, 2019). There have been a
series of trends shaping the current workplace has changed the nature of human capital
development practice to be more employee driven (Dachner, Ellingson, Noe, & Saxton, 2019).
This can be done when a leader is helping to serve his followers, he can also be learning about
them and developing their talents for the good of all on the team. A leader can learn about each
team members’ strengths and weaknesses to help build the team. The leader can look to further

invest into their followers and look for ways to help the followers advance more than even they
had imagined.
Conclusion
Group four has concluded that replenishment, integrity, vision, followership, and
employee development are the most important concepts throughout this course. For an individual
to become a well-respected and successful leader he must have a working knowledge of each of
these areas. Replenishment is essential for a leader. This allows a leader to be rested and capable
of making quick decisions that require immediate action. Replenishment also allows a leader to
be mentally and physically well (Shattell, 2018). Since a leader needs to motivate and cultivate
his subordinates, he must have a vision. The vision is what helps a leader to help guide his
employees to get the overall task completed. Without vision a leader is just leading with no
purpose and his employees will not be motivated to complete the tasks assigned (Sharma et al.,
2019). A leader must truly understand what it means to be a follower. A leadership position
requires attention to detail, understanding your role, and being humble. A follower must be true
to their organization, support their leader, and embrace the humility that allows them to set their
selfishness apart. An individual who is a true follower will learn to be a great leader (Hyatt,
2019). Employee development is essential in order to help good employees to become good
leaders. Leaders have a responsibility to foster mentor relationships in order to help the future of
corporations. Leaders will one day be replaced because of retirement, other opportunities, or
other circumstances. Since most companies like to promote internal employees for leadership
positions, it would be best to promote those individuals who have learned to mimic the great
qualities from a strong leader (Dachner et al., 2019). Integrity is the most important concept out
of all these concepts. Integrity demonstrates the consistency of actions, values, methods,
BMAL 501 DB FORUM 6 GROUP SUMMARY 8
measures, principles, expectations and outcomes of a great leader (Dees, 2013) If a leader does
not have integrity he will be unsuccessful and will not be respected by his subordinate. All of
these concepts have been demonstrated in both textbooks for this course. These concepts from
Bob Dees reflect the same ideas with those of Satterlee’s textbook Organizational management
and leadership. This indicates these concepts are universally needed in order for a leader to be
successful.
